Rival wise, how was Zoey?

If there's one thing that I don't understand, it's that nice/friendly rivals are never given chances.

I'm well aware that Zoey used Glameow a whole lot, and if her dislike for people with contest/gym passions wasn't dropped, people may warm up to her more.

But Zoey has had a lot of attention given to her this whole saga.

No matter how many other rivals are more interesting, if you exclude Paul, rival wise, Zoey holds more significance than Barry, Nando, Conway, Ursula, Kenny, and even Jessie.

My whole thing is, Zoey is a great rival, yet very underrated.

The reason why I made this thread, is to get a field of people's opinion about her overall character.

For me, she's in the Top 5 fav characters in general.

Also, as seen in the preview, she now has a Mismagius and a Gallade.

She's also determined to meet Dawn in the finals in the GF.

I know, at the end of the day, rivals like Ursula and Harley will always be contest favorites, which is fine, cause I love them too.

But I was just curious to know, is there anyone or a few that respect Zoey as a character, rival, person?

And what about Soledad, I love her, but she was nice, and no one had any bad comments to say about her. She was awesome to me, so it's not like I expected it, but she's in my Top 5, and she's nice.
 
She was OK.

I never really found her personality all that interesting though. Yeah, she lectured Dawn what to do and had a grudge against people doing Gyms/Contests at first, but meh, it wasn't all that interesting.

My enjoyment of Dawn's rivals:

Ursula > Jessie (as a rival) > Zoey > Kenny/Nando.

I notice that you really love Ursula Scott, saying in other threads how awesome it would be if she herself won the GF.

It's as almost if you love her as much as you did May years ago.

Who can blame you, tho. Ursula added so much dynamic to Dawn's contest arc.
 
I actually quite like Nozomi, because while being a friendly rival, she isn't like the friendly rivals in the games.

No bull like "Aww, Hikari. You'll do better next time I'm sure!". Straight up "This is what you were doing wrong. Do better so that I can crush you later"

Though Nozomi doesn't have a massive fanbase, we can all agree that she was better than Kengo.

Oh, and Scott's love of Urara is probably the most justified thing in the world. That isn't sarcasm.
 
I remember when she was first revealed everyone thought she was a humongous bitch, lol.

That seems to have died out a bit, but I guess after cool customers like Drew and Harley, she didn't stand a chance with them fresh on our minds.
 
People compare May and Dawn way too much.

I know people didn't expect carbon copies of Drew and Harley when it came to Dawn's arc.

Zoey does have a more masculine side, like Harley's feminine side, but Harley's was more lovable to fans.

The thing is though, Zoey and Kenny could've been changed to fit the majority of fans standards if need be.

The writers could of made Zoey a secret member of Galactic if they wanted.

They could have made Kengo a straight up bully with a harsh past.

I liked them better then Drew and Harley, TBH.

Simply because I prefer nicer people.

I do like Ursula, but I enjoyed Zoey much more.

To each his own I guess.

Ursula was the best character to come out of Dawn's contest arc. A sneaky bitch with a grudge is the perfect thing for a Contest arc, I can't wait to see what she does in the GF.

My only gripe is Ursula was introduced too late in the saga, I sometimes wish Ursula was introduced at the very beginning or at least halfway.

I'm actually interested to see Ursula and Zoey interacting, too bad there won't be much of it due to the lack of time, but those two fighting like bitches would be quality television. Hell yeah.

LMAO, I agree. It would be very awesome to see that.

Flareon was a good choice, but man are the Eevee evo's dominating the contest field.

I love how Zoey also has a Lefeon.

That battle with Nando actually looks good. It makes me like Nando, and leaves me some hope for the League.

Kenny wasn't bad, IMO. Yeah, for a childhood rival, he could've appeared a lot more, but overall, I liked him.

I personally found Dawn's arc to be more interesting than Ash's. Simply because she struggled more, and her's was much more unpredictable.

Zoey, IMO, was much more lovable than Paul.

Paul is a jackass, but people love him cause of the drama he creates.

You can't hate on people who like mean characters. There's a difference between love to hate, and hate to love.

I think people hate to love Paul, while people love to hate Zoey and Kengo.
 
She was more a mentor than rival. I've always seen her and Dawn as master and student and Dawn shall have learned all she can and then challenge the master. That sort of thin.
 
Why is this discussion in past tense? When did Zoey stop being a rival?
 
It's still going on... so no, it's not over. No matter what excuse you have "it's winding down" or whatever; it's still going on.
 
Zoey is very loyal to her friends but has no problem giving them tough criticism when the time calls for it.
However if one of her friends is being mistreated, she wastes no time sticking up for them.
Such examples include her sticking up for Dawn when she was being made fun of by "Jessilina" in A Stand-Up Sit-Down!.
Despite having an sprained ankle, she still battled in Dawn's defense. She also defended Ash after she felt Paul was being rude to him.

She tends to have harsh opinions of people who compete in both contests and Gym battles, saying, they need to make up their minds.
This is seen in her reactions to Ash in Arrival of a Rival and Nando in Dawn's Early Night.
For that she apologized to Ash for her behavior in Staging a Heroes Welcome! when she realized that it was good to learn from both types of trainers.
It was revealed in Classroom Training! that the reason for this trait in her character was that while she wanted to be a Top Coordinator, Candice wanted to be a champion Trainer.
They promised each other to follow their goals and as such Zoey looked down on people who did both since she thought they weren't taking them seriously.

Zoey's tough demeanor suggests that she's a tomboy.
This is further seen in her short haircut and her choice in Contest outfits, which are stylized suits rather than dresses.

I love all her contest suits.
 
^ If all the rivals do disappear after DP, I still hope we get some more in the next saga.

Maybe not as many, cause we've gotten 8 this saga, but I hope we get some interesting ones.

If we do get some friendly ones, that act like mentors, let's hope their battles win people over.
 
If it annoys you so much, jsut change it. Scott was saying it's pretty much over. All we have left is the GF, so this is just a reflection of how Zoey has been over the course of the series. Yeah, she could totally change by the GF, but I doubt it.

I agree. I enjoyed her a lot.

She reminds me a lot of Misty and Mai Valentine combined.

Misty cause of her tomboyish persona, and her share with Soledad as a contest rival owning the most water types, by 1, but still the most.

Mai, cause of her chill persona, still-girlish qualities, and the tendency to be misunderstood.

Characters like Misty, Zoey, and even Yugioh's Mai and Aki are so underrated.

Why can't females who love to battle and duel get more screentime.
 
It writers could've done so much with her, but unfortunately, Zoey did not interest me that much as a character. I think that the concept of her was great, you know, the whole tomboy-mentor thing. I was kinda mad with what she said about the whole contests/gyms thing, but that died out a while ago. It's just, as a rival, we don't actually get to see much...RIVALRY between Dawn and her. I kinda like the whole drama revolving around two rivals, it's more exciting for me that way.

I guess it's one of the reasons I like Paul so much. He doesn't TRY to help, but in his own way, probably affects Ash's abilities and skills more than his nicer "rivals." You learn through defeat and mistakes, and sometimes, a simple direct tutor isn't the best way to really stick it to you.

I have nothing against her, I'm not hatin', but maybe its because she doesn't have any quirks that completely appeal to me, something that makes her stand out, you know?

And no, dressing butch is nothing that new for me. I see butch girls all the time at my school XD

She still has a chance, the writers could definitely pull in something spectacular for her. I actually might be looking forward to the GF this time...maybe.

I mostly agree with this. I have nothing against a friendly rival (and I think it was a good idea considering the beginning of Dawn's storyline and her depression), but I dont find Zoey that exciting a character. I think shes ok though, and I like her battling style, I just think there's more they could have done with her.
Having said that, it looks like shes gonna be fun in the GF!
