I'm actually surprised by the fact that ROM rules are not applied to private social groups.

By the way, does anyone know if PokéCommunity has had any legal trouble with its hacking sections? Not that I'd be promoting ROM hacking, but... (for the record, of course they allow only distribution of IPS patches, not fully patched ROMs)

It is, this is a common misinterpretation. Game EULAs/manuals/etc. usually prohibit every kind of copying of the game, including "back-up copies" of the game.

^ This. My freind ROM HACKs, but I don't. I'm not planning on reporting my freind or doing it myself.

He won't be arrested unless police find out. And even then, it is very unlikely that you be put in prison.

While ROM Hacking and distributing IPS patches is perfectly legal, the ROMs you put these IPSes on tend not to be, because of EULAs as an above poster has already said, so it is condoning illegal activity in a roundabout way.

Umm... it's in no way like that. It's like saying can we make a section for how to copy a DVD onto your iPod. It may be illegal, but it's not like anyone cares.

For the record here BTW, by "Private Social Group", I mean a social group that the group leader has setup as needing approval to join, and needing membership to read.

ROM hacking is perfectly legal unless you distribute it/keep it or never make any changes to it (just you playing because you don't have the game, etc.)

Other than that, I'll just ROM hack at PokeCommunity
