A Romanian court on Friday ordered a surgeon who severed a man's penis during an operation to pay his victim 500,000 euros (785,000 dollars) in compensation.

Urologist and anatomy professor, Naum Ciomu, 62, "highly respected" by his colleagues, had been carrying out an operation on the man's testicles, but accidentally severed the penis during the surgical intervention.

The incident occurred in 2004. The victim, now 38, has undergone a number of operations since then to reconstruct his penis, but doctors have not been able to restore erectile function.

The man's wife has since left him and the man had demanded 800,000 euros in compensation.

The surgeon may still appeal the ruling.

Haha, wow, imagine that happening to you.

I have to feel sorry for the surgeon. He made a mistake and now has to pay through the nose for it. And his reputation's now gone down the drain, surely. Guess going into medicine can be pretty risky.

The man's wife has since left him
That's the most unintentionally hilarious thing about this.

500,000 euros? thats a bit, steep? I doubt that money can really pay to recover whats lost now. he must be one very angry individual. At least now he can pursue his dreams of being in the Navy.

That's the most unintentionally hilarious thing about this.
ditto :sweatlol:

The wife is really fukced up in my eyes, how could she leave her husband in his moment of need. That's truly disappointing and in a way unforgivable, it throws up questions regarding the motivation she had for marrying him in the first place (just another gold digger?).
I hope I never have to endure an operation, during which the surgeon makes a massive and irreversible mistake like the one mentioned. I also hope I never mend up in a relationship with a woman like that...

Don't judge the wife without knowing all the circumstances.

It's entirely possible that this sort of situation would have made the man short-tempered, perpetually angry, and generally impossible to live with.

It seems extremely strange to then go on and mention it in the same article, almost illogical. I can't find any reference of the wife leaving him in any other article on the subject, but as I stated it just seems odd for the journalist to mention that fact in the same context if it is in no way connected. Anyways, I cannot even find any credible sources on this event and there are even varying reports on whether it was even an accident or not. However it still begs the question as to why they would mention her leaving him, just to show the reader that his life really sucks right now or something? I think it must be related but as I cannot find any articles on it, I can't prove or disprove it. But I think it would not have been mentioned the way it was if it had not resulted from it.

Another source on the story that paints a very different picture:

Row over angry, penis-removing doctor
Tuesday, January 16, 2007
Doctors' unions in Romania have criticised a decision to make a surgeon pay £100,000 in damages after he lost his temper and hacked off a patient's penis during surgery.

Surgeon Naum Ciomu, who had been suffering from stress at the time, had been operating on patient Nelu Radonescu, 36, to correct a testicular malformation when he suddenly lost his temper.

Grabbing a scalpel, he sliced off the penis in front of shocked nursing staff, and then placed it on the operating table where he chopped it into small pieces before storming out of the operating theatre at Bucharest hospital.

A Romanian court has now awarded Radonescu £20,000 costs – to pay for the operation to rebuild his ruined penis using tissue from his arm – as well as 100,000 pounds in damages.

The medical costs will be paid by the hospital's insurer, but doctors' unions have criticised the decision that the money for the damages has to be paid by the doctor.

They say the move sets a dangerous precedent and that Professor Ciomu, a urologist and lecturer in anatomy, has already been punished enough after having his medical licence suspended.

They said he had been under stress and had lost his temper after he accidentally cut the man's urinary channel and 'overreacted' to the situation. He told the court it was a temporary loss of judgement due to personal problems.

Vice-president of the Romanian Doctors Union, Vasile Astarastoae, said: 'Ciomu's case is a dangerous precedent for all Romanian doctors. In future doctors may have to think very carefully about what work they undertake.'

Because obviously, the last thing you want is a doctor thinking carefully about the work they're doing.

The director of the ophthalmology hospital in Bucharest, Dr Monica Pop (yes, actually her name), agreed saying that doctors would in future avoid any cases where they could end up in court having to pay damages.

She added: 'Doctors in Romanian earn too little to be able to pay amounts like this. As a result it will be entirely fair if they only accept cases where they cannot make mistakes. The only way this can be avoided is if the insurance companies cover all the risk.'

I have nothing to say about this however, there is something I can say about his wife:

Well the article is obviously biased against the doctor, so what better way to make it seem like everything is the doctors fault than to tell them that his wife left him? It doesn't have to be relevant, it just has to make you empathise with the patient.

Uh, cutting off a man's penis out of anger is malpractice. Is that enough? Is it?

That article that Woingenau posted hardly seems reliable.

The director of the ophthalmology hospital in Bucharest, Dr Monica Pop (yes, actually her name)

Say what you will, but writing like that is not synonymous with reliable reporting.

I'm pretty sure it would've been accidental, god knows why the second article has blown it out of proportion that much.

I read the article Woingenau posted months ago. The Metro would have to be lying its ass off to present the story in that manner if it genuinely was an accident. And I'm sorry, what kind of surgeon 'accidentally' lops a dude's penis off?? Shouldn't he be fired for INCOMPETENCE?

Really classy for you guys to attack the wife. There have been more comments condemning her than there are condemning the surgeon. The article didn't mention when she left him; she might have stayed with him for a while and eventually left because the marriage broke down. Traumatic events often lead to marriages ending. Or maybe she was one of those 'shallow' bitches who didn't want to be in a sexless relationship - what a H0R.

Also, how does this make sense?

That's truly disappointing and in a way unforgivable, it throws up questions regarding the motivation she had for marrying him in the first place (just another gold digger?).
Yeeeeeah, she married him for his money but then ditched him before his compensation came through.

I highly doubt the metro article is in credible, but as no "credible" source can actually be found regarding this story I cannot be sure (highly unlikely)

Yeeeeeah, she married him for his money but then ditched him before his compensation came through.
That was actually the joke of my statement, she is anything but a gold digger.

That's funny how the two articles paint two totally different pictures like that: in one version it's an accident, and in the other it's because the doctor did it in a fit of rage and cut it to pieces.

Me too. The "placed it on the operating table where he chopped it into small pieces" bit jogged my memory. XD

Is that including me? *curious*

It's not funny at all!

But for some reason, I can't stop laughing!
