This is a fast breaking story so I figured I would go on and make a thread. Russian forces entered Ukraine last night and were attacked by Ukrainian forces in response.

Europe voiced alarm on Friday over reports that Moscow had sent military hardware into conflict-torn eastern Ukraine, as Kiev prepared to inspect a controversial Russian “aid” convoy parked up at the border.

Tensions, already high over fears Moscow could use its humanitarian mission as a “Trojan horse” to help rebels, spiralled further after Ukraine’s military confirmed British media reports that a small convoy of Russian armoured vehicles was seen breaching the frontier.

“If there are any Russian military personnel or vehicles in Ukraine they need to be withdrawn immediately or the consequences will be very serious,” British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond said.

Moscow has denied the allegations, the latest claims from the West that it has sent armour across the border to help pro-Kremlin separatists who launched an insurgency against Kiev in April.

Meanwhile the BBC got a look inside the aid trucks that are being brought in under the protection of the Russian Military. What they found? They were mostly empty...

A convoy of Russian trucks carrying aid for eastern Ukraine has been opened up to journalists at the border.

The Ukrainian government had insisted that inspectors checked the trucks' cargo, amid fears that they could be carrying military supplies for the rebels - an accusation Russia has rejected.

The BBC's Steve Rosenberg noted that many of the trucks were "almost empty".

Why can't the west just station troops around the Ukrainian border (still on Ukrainian territory)?

Russia is a bully (well the Russian Government not all Russian people) they want to pick on Ukraine but definitely don't want all out war with the US and EU as they know they would get a pasting.

Putting international troops on the border would act as a strong deterrent as to invade Ukraine Russia would effectively have to declare war on the entire Western World, something they wouldn't dare do.

at this time with the west baried in tsunami of debt in the trillions of USD russia or china would most likely make quick work of Ukraine and nato at this point is very much useless also Ukraine doesn't control the entire border either

I think that is a massive exaggeration, yes the US/EU are in debt atm, but they have been in higher levels before. Also in case you hadn't noticed the Russian economy is not in great shape either. Russia would not "make quick work" of a combo of US/EU/Ukraine, they would lose heavily. They wouldn't even risk it for a start. They've got the World Cup coming in 4 years Crimea aside they are desperate to improve their image in the world, the last thing they want is to start WW3

As for China there is no way they are getting involved. They are very protective of their economy. and are inextricalbly linked now to the western economies, they wouldn't want a war with the west. Also they have a large military that is largely unsophisticated.

The debt in west is the highest its ever been in it now a mathematical certainty the US and most if not all western CAN NEVER pay off there debt because to do so would extinguish there money supplies as almost all currency in circulation is an interest baring debt and would largely cripple there economies
and while russia themselves not are doing so hot these days there debt is mere 227,991,739,438 USD as of sometime today so they can easily borrow more than the west to win the war and the us has only 70, 000 troops scattered across nato and even with that being said the thing about nato is that its the USA that largely decides everything from policy to weapons almost and as result nato would be useless without the USA
