Review S08 EP12: Claydol Big and Tall

This is going straight to my Best of Pokemon archive because it is. Finally, a filler that is based on the humor as much as the Pokemon. I couldn't stop laughing seeing the pictures and now I can finally watch it in motion.

Barring horrible voice acting or stupid edits I give this one 10/10, a Hoenn first.

You’ve seen the destruction it can do? Would you mind telling me at what point it destroyed things in front of you? Besides stamping on the suits that Ash and James shouldn’t have been wearing in the first place, all it did was glide around. But no, just because it is big, you think it is a threat! Poor, misunderstood thing.

Wobbuffet was really great in this episode. It’s nice to see that the writers can actually make it do something interesting and useful every once in a while. It really has lots of humour in this episode rather than its usual popping out.

Did you notice that Brock, who usually doesn’t use his Pokémon, uses Mudkip and Lombre twice in this episode? It’s almost as if the writers want to give one of them enough coverage before letting it go...

And did you also notice that their attacks were just old stock footage. Used twice.

Well, Manene's finally vanished....as has the scroller of BFs? *blinked then*
And if they did take that out, what'd they replace it with to keep the time length? Or what part of the song did they cut?

It's the second coming of Moses! And Team Rocket is tone-deaf. But Claydol's voice isn't your average generic voice (while Sigourney's is *blech* they need more 'old men' VA), so points for that. And James cuddling his Chimecho is so cute.

...Mmm, eggplants. Poor Ash and James. But I knew it. The moment Jesse appeared individually, I knew it'd be a pick-off AND Wobbufett would be the one Claydol became infatuated with. o_O I'm frightened I got it right.

You know, I think there is a James-is-Gay conspiracy, but it ain't 4Kids fault. Two times, there was a line involving motion. James line: "I'm not feeling any movement." And Brock's line: "I can feel it moving!"

Me, being the girl I am, spazzed, and maybe I'm not sure why, but those appealled to my inner slasher. ANYWAY. =O I theorize this whole conspiracy is ALL ERIC STUART'S FAULT.

Yeah, it's not like it throws around elemental death beams whenever it feels like it.

Anyway, this was a truly great episode. And it WINS for using Lugia's Song. 9/10.

Anyone notice that they didn't really abuse any gags here? They kept the humor fresh and original. I was expecting them to abuse some of these gimmicks, but they surprised me. For instance, the bit with the sage and the souvenirs - first time it was genius, second it was funny, then it went away.

You see, it's episodes like this why AG is better than Pocket Monsters.

Pokemon Advance rocks, plain and simple. It's just as good and even better in some aspects than Kanto. We get so many fantastic episodes in a row, AG is Pokemon in it's prime.

Yes, Kanto WAS excellent, but it was only 80 episodes long. AG includes all of Hoenn and the Battle Frontier, so that's 150+ episodes so far. And we've gotten a gazillion gems from those episodes.

Sure, there may be the occassional crappy filler here and there, but otherwise AG has been fantastic. Excellent character development, great battle scenes, funny fillers, various plot twists, and overall the writers made Pokemon fun to watch again.

Had Johto never existed, the Pokemon anime wouldn't have been as ignored as it is now. Too bad so many people stopped watching when Johto was airing, they're missing out on all the great episodes of AG. Shame, they'll never know how good the anime became again.

I agree that both Kanto and AG are far superior to Johto.

However... even though Kanto is shorter, it surpasses AG on a quality-per-episode basis.

The big kicker against AG, I think, is that a lot of what it does has already been done. Sure, it may execute it better, especially if it's copying a Johto ep, but AG lacks in the originality department. That's why Kanto eps are classic - they set standards. AG's eps just follows those standards, even if it improves on them.

This episode is on par with Kanto. In fact, it's superior to the Kanto counterpart. Unfortunately, this segement between the last contest and Juan was the best AG got.

Giant Pokémon + Lugia's song + eggplant costumes = excellence.

Ballerina Jessie was kind of cute, too, as was...whatever Wobby was wearing (a dress?)

Whoever said Shigemori kept his name was wrong, because his name was very much Sigourney.

Very funny episode!! Am I the only one who wishes that James had dressed as a pretty maiden?(When was the last time he was in drag, anyway? I miss that.:-( ) Those eggplant costumes were something else! Yes, James and Chimecho were so cute.

Ok somebody is looking too hard to find references, yet again. The only fault that there's a "conspiracy" is people like you. my god.

YAY, I've been wainting for this episode to air. Loveley randomness. It was a great opportunity for James to be in drag, to bad it wasn't taken(tough we did get to see Meowth in drag:)). Eggplant scuttle was just classic(James: "Quick, dance like an Eggplant!"). Sage/Moses was funny, and huzzahs for wobbuffet in a wig!

Boy, do i love Hoenn:-)

What are you talking about? It was Hyper Beaming the hell out of that forest.

And did anyone else think that the entrance of the giant Nendoll was so much more epic feeling than anything in the Groudon and Kyogre two parter? The animation was better, too.

It was, the lake was split open and it materialized. Where were these animators for the Groudon/Kyogre battle.

Can't let a chick have her fun, can you? The lines being pointed out are actually irrelevent (because they really are; they made me giggle like a stupid moron and that was about it), but I needed somewhere to throw out my theory. And hey, I wasn't apart of the conspiracy until I knew there was one. And I wasn't looking too hard. There are some lines that just don't make sense, and they all seem to come out of Eric Stuart's mouth. Please reference the Vanity Affair thread to back up this theory.

I'm not so serious about the whole thing; I just think it's funny in the end. ;3
