It's time for Ash's final Hoenn Gym Battle, but can he win against the tough Juan, who has won the Grand Festival?

I'm putting this up early since the first part just aired in the UK...

So we finally get to Sootopolis City and Juan. That there is no reference to even the possibility that Wallace could have been the town's Gym Leader is slightly annoying, yet to be expected, I suppose.

The butler is voiced by Mike Pollock... Well, at least he makes more of an effort than with Contesta.

The double battle was pretty well done, though the usual 'few hits to make a KO' is present. I especially liked how Ash remembers what he learnt from his battle against Walrein just before the Groudon/Kyogre episodes.

What annoys me most is that Juan doesn't have a Kingdra. (Just a Seadra.) It's his signature Pokémon and the most annoying thing I have ever had to face. It's probably just because it is fresh in my mind since I only defeated it in Emerald yesterday.

As for the cliffhanger... a slightly surprising one. Especially since love is currently doing much worse to Grovyle in Japan.

Weird. KTLA doesn't list the episode title for the 10:30am episode. While it does make sense that we'd get part two airing during the second slot, it isn't, as far as I know, confirmed to be airing yet.

They're both definitely airing. I am quite excited to see Ash's final Gym battle in Hoenn. 5 on 5 battles are awesome, and the 8th Gym is usually better than the ones before it.

Huh, a 5 on 5 battle? How could it be 5 on 5?

I'm confused. o_o

Scott85, don't you mean 6 on 6?

Juan uses 5 Pokemon, so that means Ash has to use the same amount. Those are the Sootopolis Gym rules.

Oh, okay.

Well, those are some interesting rules.

Thanks, TK n Happy Ness.

So, I guess it would be easier for Ash to choose which Pokemon he won't be using, since that's all of his team except for one. ^^

And lol, no more spoilers please, that's enough for me. XD

If you don't want spoilers then do what I do and don't go in the episode review theads untill you've seen the episode.

The one he didn't use was particularly obvious since Ash really doesn't need a type disadvantage against Juan.

The battles in part two were really good. I think this is my favourite Gym Battle so far. Ash keeps showing his skills, with the exception of the blunder over Grovyle fainting. He had the sense to remove Tauros when it was confused way back in the Orange League. Why doesn't he have the sense to maybe stop Grovyle damaging itself now?

Thankfully, it picks up for the battle against Whiscash. Swellow was really impressive here, and Ash is benefiting from the work he put into teachng it Aerial Ace.

And then we get to Milotic. My initial concerns turned out be unfounded. Milotic is perfectly suited to Juan, and I was very pleased to see Ash having to deal with Recover. And what a way to do it!
Certainly better than the battle against Lucy's Milotic.
The use of rain also added to this battles greatness.

Even Team Rocket were great and didn't take away from the action. And it's nice to see that Juan is inspiring some other powerful Water trainers. It's a shame Misty couldn't have been there.

Dub-wise, Luvdisc keeps its Chronicles voice.
Though when is the seriousness of the next contest mentioned in Japan? Because it wasn't mentioned here.

But it's one solid block concerning the same battle.

Anyway, I so totally KNEW it! I knew Juan would be voiced by Sean Schemmel, though I will admit, I was expecting the accent to be thicker/deeper. Predictability, so promotes 4Kids.

Based on both episodes....eh. You only get good words from me toward Juan's artistic display in the beginning of GEF, /and/ Juan!James' performance with the ladies. Jesse wasn't lookin' too distressed over James' flirtations. ...Not that I'm looking for anti-Rocket hints. o_O Or, y'know, care. .... *runs before she's made into stew*

GEF: 6.5/10
EAE: 6/10

.....what? I'm stingy!

Jessie did seem bothered to me. Not that I'm a RocketShipper, and it was probably more to do with the plan than anything.

The best part about Juan was that he was a coordinator and he won the Grand Festival. I like the fact that the writers tied him into both Ash and May's goals.

Since Juan is such a great coordinator, it would have been nice to have a filler after this with Juan training with May about various coordinator techniques.

Otherwise great episodes.

Before GF: "What? Now way! This is Ash's moment to shine."

After GF: "Ehh.. Sure, why not. Ash got something nice during May's big moment. Only seems fair."

Compared to Cerulean City, the Gym is pretty impessive. Besides, Juan doesn't have the personality to make people walk along thin ice.
