Review S11 EP09: Team Shocker!

Kenny and Ambipom's voices got slightly better. Jessie was way too high pitched. The monkey sounds they tried to recreate just sound like grunting and straining.

Did anyone think Kenny and Jessie's appeals kinda sucked, or was it just me? I can't believe Jessie passed by getting hit by a Psybeam yet Dawn didn't.

Jessie winning a ribbon is the best thing about the episode. It only took her 3 regions but she finally won one. I don't think she'll get into the Grand Festival but at least she finally got one victory.

Dawn losing her second appeal round was interesting, but the impact of this Contest has kinda worn off now that we know what happens after.

A talking flowerpot got through an appeal, but a grinning purple monkey that shoots stars out of it's two tails didn't?

Kenny must have had just the worst cold when dubbing the episode. Person who did Zoey must have a bad cold too. Who's next.

I liked Iwane's animation for this episode, of course.

I was surprised when Brock said jessie did the same thing every contest. Yeah, because Seviper, Carnivine, and Dustox are all the same Pokemon. He must just hate poor Jessalina.

I liked how Jessie finally won a ribbon. She deserved it this time. I liked how earlier James and Meowth didn't try to give Jessie a strategy.

So is Zoey's only purpose in this episode was to beat up Dawn. Surprising.

Oh my god, this has some of the worst captions I've ever seen. They don't indicate when a new person talks, and since they're scrolling, it makes the whole thing look like a giant monologue.

Dustox laughing is hilarious.

That guy in red looks like he's dressed as a drum major.

I always think they draw the audience at these things far too big. When Jessilina adresses the stadium, it makes it look like there's thousands and thousands of people there.

Also, I recon half the audience can see up that skirt when she's flyin' around.

"Always the same thing with her"? Brock, have you been paying attention at ALL? Maybe insofar as she involves herself in the appeal, but come ON Brock, you're supposed to be the smartest one out of the whole main cast.

LOL at Ambipom breakdancing.

"Don't you think it's a bit...much?" Brock, what crawled up your ass and died today? Was he in this bad of a mood in the original? Because what he's saying and how he looks don't match up at all.

Hey, a contest where we don't see Hoodie Guy or any of the recurring background people. Although that magician looking guy needs to show up again, the guy who showed up on the board first. There could be an interesting story with someone who looks like that--he looks like a cross between the Gentleman who traded Ash his Raticate and Goniff the thief.

Dammit. Jesse wins and we hardly get anything on her. Not that I don't love angst in my Pokémon, but still.

Ooh, and lesbian overtones. Zoey comes all the way out there to cheer up Dawn and work with her, isn't that cute? I don't think Drew ever did that for May.

Zoey (dammit, my late goldfish was named Zoe and I keep spelling it like that) sounds different than she usually does. Am I just not remembering her voice or something? I couldn't remember Kenny's voice and he was in last week's episode.

Damn you, writers! Jesse wins and we don't see her after that? She's a main character too, you know!

I have to admit, I also lol'd the way Zoey just went right up to Dawn's bed and pulled the covers off her.

WTF! Now I kinda understand what people mean by Zoey controlling everything Dawn does.

I wonder what the people here will complain about today....

I also thought Kenny's appeal looked boring, but, as most of us know, Contests aren't all about pretty shiny sparkly things - ala, Dawn's appeal - they're more than that. And the 'that' is something I'm not bothered to explain.

Dustox and Jessie laughing together. I think my mind just broke. Dustox's final moment of glory. Dawn really tries too hard. I'm not sure whether she should've listened to Kenny or Zoey more. Good thing she does eventually get her act together again.

Uh, glaringly obvious plot hole alert! Jessie showed be being called Jessediah (or however that's spelled), not Jessalina. Jessalina's her Battle Frontier disguise, remember?

I liked Jessie's appeal. It brought back memories of the Hoenn appeals that focused on the Coordinators interacting with their Pokémon instead of just big CGI effects. Good for her, winning a contest. Kenny's was... unfocued. I didn't see what the problem with Dawn's was until Zoey pointed out that you couldn't see Ambipom. Good point.

Speaking of Zoey, wtf! XD That girl sure is weird.

Ash, Brock, James, and Meowth all annoyed me in this episode. '_';

Was I completely imagining things, or was the opening shorter than usual? I know the ending credits were.

Hmm, I liked this episode. Yay for Jessie~

Yeah, the shock of Dawn's second appeal loss wasn't as extreme, but it's not too terrible when later happens...yeah, that later.

I haven't too much to say. =P

But I will say that Ambipom isn't as bad as most are making it out to believe. Granted it's not good, but it's not absolute suckage either. >_>

EDIT:

Actually, Jessebella was BF, Jessediah was Kanto GF and Jesselina is now.

...*thinks*

Ah, I believe you're right. Sorry, my brain doesn't function correctly after only three hours of sleep. ^^; *feels stupid*

james and Meowth did irriate me a bit. They seemed more happy for themselves than Jessie that she won. THough, the worst that'll she'll do now is go Baleen whale and yell at them for a second or two.

They replaced the music when Dawn finds out she loses. The super dramatic piece that played when Misty left the group in the Japanese version, when Jessie/James gave up Weezing/Arbok, etc. It was never kept in the 4Kids dub, but PUSA has kept music that 4Kids wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole. I guess this piece isn't one of them. What assholes. I bet they did this deliberately to piss me off.

What they replaced it with is bullshit, too. Like when it shows Dawn clenching her fist and the music goes into overdrive mode like she's about to bitch-slap Jessie or something. It's all wrong. And then there's that scene where Dawn is in her bed, looking at her mother's ribbon. In the Japanese version all she says is "Mama..." and in the American version she's like "Oh, what am I going to do?" Their lack of emotional comprehension is utterly appalling, I may actually stop watching the dub because of this.

Um... Ambipom was better. Whatever.

She's still feeling like a failure, like she let someone down. Just not identifying *who* she let down doesn't change the overall emotion she's feeling.

Besides, better to feel like she failed herself than to feel like she failed a mother who snapped at her for calling at an emotional time. If my mother did that to me under those circumstances, I'd still be reeling even after the months.

[email protected] email him a letter of complaint, he's responsible for the dub productions over at duart.

and it really saddens me that they replaced that one, shows how much better the japanese version really is...

It's pretty much all the same shit, no matter what language its in.

I don't have cable, so I didn't see the episode, but I did see the Japanese version. Dawn losing again was a big suprise, and one thing I didn't like was how and who she got her second ribbon from. To go from failing the appeals twice to beating you-know-who in the you-know-what, it's just odd to me.

She's still feeling like a failure, like she let someone down. Just not identifying *who* she let down doesn't change the overall emotion she's feeling.
The emotion that is conveyed to the viewer is lost. Dawn feels like a failure in both versions, and we get that. However, it's a much stronger character piece to simply say "Mama" than to outright express "Oh, what am I going to do?" At this point Dawn feels like complete shit because she has failed to live up to the high expectations set by her mother, whereas in the English version it's more like "Fiddle dee dee, I've lost the contest." The tone is completely different.

I don't think the emotion is as bad as you make it sound, Dawn's VA certainly made her sound sad when she was crying.

Of course I can't speak for the music, but in terms of dialouge/acting I thought it was fine.

This was a good episode, I guess.

But I didn't care much for it, because I'm not a big fan of Jessie or Team Rocket. ^^;

So pretty much, the only scenes I liked were the ones involving Dawn, Kenny, Zoey, and of course Ash. XD

Anyway, I know that Pokemon USA didn't keep very many songs in this episode. But still, I like the songs that they DID keep. ^^

Come to think of it, I always like the pieces they keep for every episode. Because those songs are the usual stuff, like battle themes and character themes, heh. XD

And yes, the ending credits were definitely shorter. I don't know about the opening though, cause I missed a minute or two. When I turned on the TV, I saw Jessie and Dustox for about two seconds and then it switched to the opening. O.O

I completely agree with you!

And you know what, Dawn's VA is probably my favorite member of the Pokemon USA cast. ^^

In my opinion, she does a MUCH better job than all the replacement VAs put together (Sarah Natochenny, Bill Rogers, and Jimmy Zoppi - I'm not including Michele Knotz, because she actually does a pretty good job with Jessie).

I don't have much to say about Sarah's Ash, because she only had about a dozen lines in the whole episode, lol. However, I will say that I don't like the pitch that Sarah has chosen right now. It's too deep, in my opinion. And I really think Ash would sound better if Sarah gave him a higher pitched voice (at least a little bit higher than THAT anyway).

As for Dawn, Brock, and Jessie they were all fine. James and Meowth were good as well. ^^

Kenny's voice started out sounding one way, and then it changed pitch in the middle of the episode. Heh, that sounds like what Sarah has been doing with Ash's voice! XD

Now, about Zoey, I don't know whether they gave her another VA, or if the person who does her voice just has a bad cold right now. But anyway, I agree with what everyone has been saying. Zoey's voice sounded really strange in this episode! O_O

By the way, I think Zoey's voice is so low pitched that she sounds exactly like Ash sometimes. XD In fact, she sounded really close to Veronica's Ash voice in "A Sit Down, Stand Up". And I feel the same way about this episode too.
