Dawn meets her mom's friend yay..

Heh, natsume sure knows how to animate comedic episodes. This is the first contest she did, I think?

Wallace's outfit looks really good.

Lol Ash must get tired when he thinks.

For once, Dawn has a different hairstyle for a contest. But the same...dress.

Lila's appeal was pretty good.

Jessie pulls a better French accent than Fantina..

Did Marion say 'Celestic town Champion' for Jessie? Random incorrectness

Yanmega agsin. YAY!! I actually liked this appeal, but it wasn't as good as some other ones.

Dawn's appeal would have been better if Buneary didn't mess up.

I didn't know ribbons can be acquired over many years and festivals and still be used now.

lol, Jessie just.....fell.

Wow, Johanna is just like one of those parents who live through their children....

Wow Lila is pwning Dawn for now.

Not to mentiuon her moves look pretty good.

That Swift looks pretty good.

Even though the battle was good, I don't understand how she won when Lila was in the lead.

A lot of Japanese music seems to be kept in this episode.

Ash and Brock......never.wear.that.again.

Good episode, Battle a bit quick but oh well. Poor TR didn't do too much..

Re: 'Battling the Generation Gap' Review thread

It was cute but during their battle, Lilah looked truly EVIL. It was like "Whoa what the hell..she looks like she's gonna MURDER someone"

Ambipom is adorable when it's attracted.

Re: 'Battling the Generation Gap' Review thread

Even though the battle was good, I don't understand how she won when Lila was in the lead.

Because that attack before the giant swift showdown, knocked Lila's points off by a lot; so they were fairly even at that point then swift knocked Delcatty back earning Dawn the win.

In closed captioning whenever Delcatty would sing it would say: Humming "Jigglypuff"

Re: 'Battling the Generation Gap' Review thread

So Dawn faces yet another experienced opponent. Appeals are pretty good, and Jessie tries to make herself the star again. At least Yanmega is fulfilling its role of replacing Dustox. I'm sorry, I was paying little attention to the background story what with Oracion playing in the background. Now here, Dawn really shows her skill, and we are reminded Ambipom is female. Another win by a small margin. I guess I can excuse it against an experienced opponent, but she really needs to get more definitive wins. Okay ep.

Re: 'Battling the Generation Gap' Review thread

Lila's Delcatty was masculine. Okay.
Dawn's Ambipom was female. Now I know that.
Dawn annoys me again with her excessive spirit and joy.
Lila seemed to be a good co-ordinator in the ep, I kept rooting for her win throughout the episode.

Honestly, it's one of those Contest episodes that make me question the purpose of showcasing them in such a way such as this. I mean, most of the appeals aren't really... Appealing. It was all right, I suppose.

Re: 'Battling the Generation Gap' Review thread

In the Japanese version of this episode Brock clearly say "The male Delcatty and the female Ambipom"
I'd like to know if Brock said the same thing in the dub... and if possible, an exact quote of what he said will be great
Thanks

More or less. Brock says Delcatty is male and Ambipom is female.

Great, thanks!

I guess the closed captions are copied from the episodes scripts where they probably wrote this line for Delcatty's "dialog" whenever it used Sing so in case they dub Delcatty they'd know it's supposed to sound like Jiggly's song
And really did they dub Delcatty? I think the previous Delcatty we saw kept their Japanese voice

Re: 'Battling the Generation Gap' Review thread

XD the cloths Ash and Brock tried on made them look.... just wrong XD

Never Again....

Other than that, it was a pretty good episode

They didn't dub Delcatty, it was just the Jigglypuff song as the background music.

Re: 'Battling the Generation Gap' Review thread

I really liked this Contest battle. Mainly because from here on out Ambipom may as well not exist. Poor monkey. :-( It was great to see her show off how strong she was, and I liked seeing both Attract and Sleep be overcome in this battle.

And Jessie copies Fantina by...literily copying Fantaina...sigh... Let's hope she never does something like this ever again.

I know I'm beating a dead horse with this tone of voice thing, but the way Jessie said "Come on!" was all wrong. She's supposed to sound extremely confident, not edge of your seat excited. That drink and the neck massage sure were funny though. Can we rub your feet too Jessie?

Ash couldn't possibly have any less fashion sense, but at least he figured out a way to fight Fantina.

I wonder how many more episodes it'll be before CN realizes that they're still using 4Kids' credits.

Re: 'Battling the Generation Gap' Review thread

It seems I was right to look forward to this episode

Laila? That's a pretty name.

Oh dang. Who knew Pokéstylist was an actual occupation.

I'm not sure whether that Wallace outfit looks more...guy-ish or not.

Poor Ash keeps falling asleep!

"Who's that Pokémon?" There's something we haven't heard in a while.

Is that Kyle's Crawdaunt?

Now that's a creative way to fail, Jessalina. Like the dress, though.

WHOA! They're playing Oraceon! ...Did I spell that right?

Again with the lame sleep moves.

Ambipom just looks silly with attacking with Attract Status.

THEY'RE PLAYING THAT DARKRAI MUSIC! AWESOME! SIMPLY EPIC!

We all knew that Ash has no style. And judging by Brock's "Paradise" outfit, forget about it.

All in all, I'm watching this again RIGHT NOW!

Re: 'Battling the Generation Gap' Review thread

Was a pretty good awsome XDD gald dawn got her 3rd ribbon x and omg ash was so cute at the end <3

Re: 'Battling the Generation Gap' Review thread

They really went overboard with the "No Need to Worry", and Brock's constant commentary got annoying after a while, but otherwise it was a great ep.

Hopefully Ash never tries to dress himself again

Re: 'Battling the Generation Gap' Review thread

Before I start, folks, let me be honest. I have some difficulties reviewing and rating today's episode :S

The fact that two AWESOME and FANTASTIC pieces of music from the 10th Pokemon movie were kept (the somehow creepy Darkrai-music and the most outstanding and wonderful piece of music EVER, namely Oraciòn) extremely excited me!

And not to forget two hilarious, priceless scenes which really cracked me up: Firstly, Jessie's pseudo-French accent and her performance which was weird but absolutely funny at the same time! I had to laugh out loud. Quite frankly, it's a shame that she didn't make it to the second round! Bad, bad judges!:disgust:
Secondly, the final scene in which Ash and Brock were wearing that hippie gear. yeah yeah yeah, just awesome! This scene really saved the episode.
And that brings my to the point where I have to say that the contest itself or rather its result(because I really liked the background story with Laila) was a disappointment to me :bawling: :

Once again, Dawn's victory was somehow undeserved and a deus-ex victory. Sorry, I myself hate having to say that but I can't help it. :(
Because that attack before the giant swift showdown, knocked Lila's points off by a lot; so they were fairly even at that point then swift knocked Delcatty back earning Dawn the win.
Again, sorry, but this explanation doesn't seem sufficient to me.
By the end of the battle, Laila had only lost about one quarter of her total points but suddenly(!) her points illogically melted away like ice in the desert only because of a few attacks which btw. shouldn't have done much.
Dawn's only impressive and powerful attack was the last giant Swift which, however, was by no means that powerful to make up for her considerable deficit.
Such "wondrous" victories had already been there in Hoenn and it unfortunately seems that the writer are going to continue this sad trend in Sinnoh. I really loved to see how much Dawn and the Sinnoh competitions have improved compared to May's often "cheap" victories.
So, dear writers, please don't start to destroy what you've created so successfully!!

I always look forward to the Pokemon episode during the whole week and the more I'm disappointed that today's one reminded me of old unpopular mistakes and couldn't live up to my expectations.

5.0 / 6.0 (considering the funny appearances of Ash, Brock and Jessie) out of 10 points

Re: 'Battling the Generation Gap' Review thread

They really love this Pokéstylist stuff, huh?

Wait, what'd they say Wallace wore that outfit to? The Top Coordinator... Carnival? So is that like a convention or the Contest counterpart of the Championship League? Was I not paying enough attention at that part?

Haha, Dawn's finally got someone gunning specifically for her. XD I liked Lila, she was an interesting concept.

Cool, Ambipom doing stuff! Oh, I miss the days of Aipom actually having a personality and having screentime. D:

LMAO at Jessie as Fantina. I'm getting flashbacks to Harley. Jeez, girl, learn from your mistakes and move on from the flying thing. Although it does look cool.

Liked Ash's and Brock's outfit. The dress Dawn picked out was hideous, though.

Once again, Dawn's victory was somehow undeserved and a deus-ex victory. Sorry, I myself hate having to say that but I can't help it. :(
...that was like... not DEMy at all. Ambipom used Swift. Which it's known since its introduction. The points didn't magically jump around, and Dawn wasn't getting her ass handed to her. Maybe they went overboard with all the CGI, but it's hardly what I'd call a dues ex machina or undeserved.

Can I say bull crap?

Ignoring the point system for the moment, this is Ambipom we're talking about not Sunkern that was just caught before the contest began. Anyone doubting Ambipom's strength is just wrong. This is the same Pokemon that loves contests, and was decent as an Aipom under Ash (beating a Roserade, even with a blind disadvantage).

Secondly the point system. I do not see what the problem is, I mean its the judges who docks off the points. Repetition probably won't help you win. Let's look at what happened, move by move, point by point (even if it wasn't shown)

1st Move: Swift on Delcatty, fine fair enough it was substitute, but still point loss worthy. Both people lost points

2nd Move: Shockwave from Delcatty. Dawn loses points.

Next Move(s)- Ambipom uses double team and focus punch, even afflicted with Attract, only loss of points go to Lila which is how you spell her name by the way).

Sing and "Iron Tail"- Point loss to Dawn

Shockwave- Point loss to Dawn. Lila looks to be winning.

Swift, Substitute, Double hit, and Attract status, double team, sing double team, double hit- Finally Lila loses points while Dawn doesn't.

Beautiful swift, loss of points on Lila by a lot, not DEM, considering it was the most appealing attack in the whole match, not even that first Shockwave was as appealing.

Shockwave- Creates Galaxy of swift (really appealing), Dawn knows she's going to pull through. Swift knocks the Shockwave back, Delcatty can't attack. Mega Swift slams into Delcatty and "kills" it.
*****************************

Even if the Points may have been messed up after the long sequence of Swift, Substitute, Double hit, and Attract status, double team, sing double hit, you can't say Lila actually gave it her all (appeal wise). After that last long sequence which was in being controlled by Dawn by the way, the last moves that Swift, Ambipom did, ensured Delcatty's defeat, especially since Delcatty failed to deflect that and got hit by that monster of attack.

That final Swift showdown was the most appealing thing in the whole match, and don't argue with me, even if you didn't like it, it was still the most aesthetically pleasing thing in the whole battle. Not even that rainbow shockwave was as appealing (which is the only thing that accounts for Dawn's loss of Points, those lots of points she lost). If that isn't what destroyed Lila's points by far, then you need to watch again.
************************************

Seriously I'm getting sick of this DEM crap being thrown around like it's actually deserved. Like if a Sunkern used tackle, against Dusknoir and won. That's DEM (considering Sunkern can't even use tackle), not this battle, Dawn deserved this win.

Seriously stop underestimating a certain Pokemon and overestimating another Pokemon. Honestly as far as I'm concerned, everyone is equal in strength and power in contests.

Re: 'Battling the Generation Gap' Review thread

I was surprised at how much I actually liked this episode. The flashback to Johanna battling Lilah (who is a freakin' AWESOME character, even though she's a character of the day) was pretty interesting, and for once, *collective gasp* Dawn remembered she had pokemon besides Piplup! Seriously, I wouldn't mind the thing so much if she used her others more...but I digress.

I really feel like Lilah was a great character, and I hope to see more of her. I don't watch the contest eps much (I prefer the battles, myself), but more characters with the type of personality Lilah had might coerce me into it. I really don't know what it was about her that I liked so much...some of her lines were a bit cheesy, but other than that, I'd love to see more personalities like her's.

Dawn's appeal was surprising to me. The impromptu Buneary ice skating on it's ears was cute, and that was a nice save by her at the end. Cherrim's appeal was pretty spectacular, too. LOL at Jessie's -- it was actually, in perspective, one of her more mild and 'tame' ones, which just makes it even funnier. Is it sad that I though she actually looked decent imitating Fantina (appearance-wise, I mean)?

Wish we could have seen more of the battles, but Ambipom being used was a HUGE surprise. When was the last time she did anything other than stand in the background? And I actually feel like Dawn deserved this win in the battle round. Yes, Lilah was EONS more experienced, and was at a huge advantage, especially when she started tossing Sing around. However, for some reason, I feel like their pokemon were fairly evenly matched (unlike the Wallace Cup battle, which I won't get into). Maybe it was because Ambipom actually had an established record of experience if her own, built up with Ash, so it felt more even. Anyway, it was a fairly interesting battle, too. The idea of using Double Team to surround Delcatty and then having all of them use Focus Punch was something I was really surprised that Dawn would come up with. It kinda annoyed me how attract kept getting referenced as a 'status,' though...I mean yeah, technically it is, but it just sounds weird when it's said like that. The near-constant cutting back to Johanna just to hear her reminisce got annoying, though.

I wonder if we'll ever see Dawn in that orange dress she picked out...her pink one's getting kinda old to see. And boys...just....no. Now, I've seen the Fantina gym battle ep, and I'm still wondering how Ash used this battle to get an idea for how to counter Hypnosis. Anyway...I have to say, Dawn's hair looks a lot better in a ponytail than in pigtails. I'm glad she changed it for that last round.

All in all...a surprisingly good ep. Wish TR could have done a bit more, but I'm glad they gave the last battle the time it needed without rushing it.

Rating: 7.75/10

I dunno. I thought the use of attract status was interesting until they played it off like a non-detrimental confusion. I mean Brock pointing out, "Hey the attract status wore off!" and then Ambipom is in the mood to pummel Delcatty again? Sounds like a Deus-Ex to me.

Maybe if Ambipom could have pulled it off under attraction, that would have been neat, but pulling 'attract' away was pretty cheap, since both in game and realistically speaking, attraction just doesn't go away.

Other than that, I loved the final blow though even for how overdone it may have been. Getting crushed under a galactic sized spiraling cluster is enough to win any competition.
