Review S12 EP02: A Breed Stampede!

Re: 'A Breed Stampede' review thread

Why doesn't anyone just ASK Piloswine what its issue is? *sigh*

"Tell me how we can talk through ice." LOL! I was wondering that very thing right then....

Re: 'A Breed Stampede' review thread

...Well it's better than last season's finale.

I wanted to like this episode, I really did, but really, it just seemed bad to me. James was kinda good though. And I'm assuming they were trying to look like hippies. And Piloswine was crazy.

Did Jessee really say that she would spank it? Really?

I still believe Swinub evolved to early, I guess swine flu is good for it. though it's voice is just a tiny bit too high. I expected it to be like Yanmega.

Maybe it's because I'm still glad that these episodes are better than that Finale, so I'm giving it a 65/100.

Re: 'A Breed Stampede' review thread

In spite of a REALLY good episode, the dub of it is just so terrible.

I know that Piloswine and Mamoswine are dramatically different than their japanese names, but seriously, they could have picked better voices of either. Piloswine sounds like a faulty imitation of Pryce's Piloswine, and further proof that jap voice dubs are better than eng voice dubs. Mamoswine is only slightly better, and I would have wondered if dubbing it would have been necessary. Manmoo sounds slightly off from its first two syllables, "Mamo."
There's just so much dub music in one episode- at least balance it out with some original BGM. Even the BGM that did not contain japanese singing would have been preferred.

Re: 'A Breed Stampede' review thread

You know, I take it back. Piloswine is not just like Char, it's worse than Char. He never just attacked everyone, unless he was enthusiastic about something. And it's still a glutton, too. One character rip off at a time, writers. For the last time, Piplup, you are not Pikachu, stop trying to be him. And they fall for lame TR trap #210447, only to be saved by the massive size difference of evolving. I have nothing to say because we've all seen this before.

It's been a while since we've seen a full-scale TRio operation with buildings and everything, hasn't it?

If the writers had planned on having Piloswine be disobedient, why did they have it seem happy with Dawn last episode? At least Charmeleon had something of an excuse to suddenly act the way it did.

Mamoswine is huge. o.o

Interesting to have Ash and Brock choose Grotle and Croagunk as the Pokémon they feel they need to bond with. I figure that Ash just wants to help Grotle adjust to its new size by going around an obstacle course and Brock thinks Croagunk could use some group participation since its usually off on its own? Dunno. But anyway, Brock and Croagunk holding hands was adorable.

Eh, okay ep for introducing a new plot point, I suppose. Let's hope Dawn remembers she has a Soothe Bell.

Not a bad episode. I did love Gliscor in this episode wanting to be involved, but rejected. And I always enjoy watching Piplup being thrown around like a rag doll.

My main complaint is Team Rocket. I mean, I know how everything works with Ash & Co. not recognizing Team Rocket. But still, the disguises weren't all that good. And don't make me rant about Takeda's animation. There were times where it looked good in the beginning. But by the end of the episode, it was bad.

I'm not too against the writers about the quick evolution. Piloswine can learn Ancientpower not long after evolution, so it seems a little bit more plausible. Still, I wish the writers could've developed Piloswine more with Dawn before evolving it. But hey, things could be worse.

It's nothing to write home about, but hey, I've seen much worse.

Gliscor rocked in this episode, like it always does. That's funny to see it come from behind and become pretty competent.

And then there's the humor of none of the Pokémon having success in stopping Piloswine except for Happiny. Giving that little thing super-strength is still so random and so amusing. <3

Has anyone else noticed Piplup's been owned in some way or another right and left lately? Is this a new recurring joke? :P

Nando won the Beach Rose contest ribbon, Kenny won the Gerbera contest ribbon, and the next contest is in Chocovine city/town/I barely caught the spellings, what sort of establishment they were was out of the question.

Oiii, I spent the entire Friendship school covering my eyes. The hand-holding I thought was so damn adorable, but my brain could not handle how embarrassing that all must be. And then James walked out in...that.

Piplup is the bomb. But of course, it took an entire episode of sheer smack-downs to finally get it into game-mode. And it still gets pummeled, but also gets the thanks it deserves. Though don't you think recalling a CHARGING snowcow should have been done far sooner? Let's not wait until it turns into a mammoth none of your brood can possibly stop before using that tactic, shall we?

I know certain people have/are going to use this episode as yet another examples of "the writers wanting to never in-episode reference the past" because Ash didn't cite how Charmeleon/Charizard barely obeyed him for the longest time, in a similar situation to this. But I think it's a fine omission. If Ash gave Dawn keys to the answers, she'd never figure it out on her own, and if she knows Ash can help but he won't tell her what to do, that puts Ash in the "bad friend/douche" category. Lose/lose situation, for either the audience or the characters.

My only problem with the whole mammoth story is that Dawn will hardly use it for the rest of her run. As we've seen, Swinub did practically nothing while it was around but eat food...and we're looking forward to a lot of sleeping from the mammoth from now on.

It's a shame that a certain other Pokemon on her team is screwed off because of this too, one that actually had proper development. Poor purple monkey. :/

Uh, Piloswine's was the same as its Japanese voice, so...yeah. Mamoswine is basically the same as Mamoo, the only real difference was the "swine" part.

Bad animation destroyed this episode, but I did like Piplup showing some real interesting personality after who knows how long.

Re: 'A Breed Stampede' review thread

No, it was definately dubbed over.
It was a pretty good voice though, regardless. If it was shouting out 'Piloswine, pilo pilo! Piloswiiine!' or something, I'd get Boron's complaint, but as it stands....

They also did well with Mamo, but this is another one of those cases that makes me wonder why they bothered to change it in the first place.

Sheesh, what's with all the hate? The non Team Rocket parts were fine as usual. I have no problem with this Mamoswine situation and I think it leads to some very funny moments.

I thought Brock holding Croagunk's hand was kinda creepy myself.

Team Rocket though... it's not like anything was really wrong, it's just that they felt very off this week since their Japanese counterparts were acting fairly Japanese this week. Add in the American slang the dub threw around and it just made for a jarring experience.

I can't believe Jessie actually said she'd give it a spanking. Does PCI have any idea what kind of can of worms they just opened up with that?

And sponge cake? lol. Channeling 4Kids I see.

So what was it really? I can't make heads or tails of that mishmash.

No, but I bet some pervert's just invented a new shipping. Ugh...

Still, I'm glad Gliscor finally caught a break in this episode. That Fire Fang is really handy.

I think it was some old bread or something.

Anyways, I liked this episode quite a bit. Piloswine's disobidence swas quite funny as were Piplup's beatings.

Good to see Nando does exist. And to think, I thought he was dead.

Heh, I like how James and Meowth called out Jessie's selfishness. Too bad they got blasted off so quickly.

Nice to see the punk rocker outfits. Last time we saw thoswe was the first Jiggly episode I think. Too bad they didn't try to have any accents.

Takeda's animation is just getting worse and worse though.

I like how everyone just blindly throws out their Pokemon. And what kind of friendship workout is that, James?

And of course, the twerrps make things too easy.

Stock footage motto,l though it is good to see the elements again.(Earth, Wind, Sky).

'We tricked you more times than you have birthdays' so true...

YANMEGA!!! How long since I heard that voice. Though when Carnivine came out, it's tentalegs were moving weirdly.

Mamoswine SMASH!!!

Heh Meowth finally understands Physics a bit more....good job.

Overall good episode marred by terrible animation. Whoever employs Takeda, fire him.

The most interesting is that when Mamoswine will finally obey to Dawn and when Dawn reaches Grand Festival ofcourse she will pass 1 st stage and will use Mamoswine in battles. Lets remember all her rivals: Zoey, Nando, Kenny. The most funny thing is that no one of them has a Pokemon which can win over her Mamoswine. HOLY CRAP!! Even if she is weaker than Zoey, Nando she can win over them ))) OH MAN!!!

If the writers had planned on having Piloswine be disobedient, why did they have it seem happy with Dawn last episode? At least Charmeleon had something of an excuse to suddenly act the way it did.

Emphasis mine. That's the sixty three thousand Pokeball question, isn't it? They could have just had Piloswine stand there like the immovable object during the phone call to Pallet Town. That's possibly the worst continuity slipup DP has yet committed....

Wait, I take that back. Having Dawn able to recall a Pokemon in the middle of an enraged charge is the worst one. It's been repeatedly stated in the show that a really agitated Pokemon can't be recalled successfully. If anything, it should have popped right back out again, like Seviper did when it was fighting those Zangoose that one time. AND, as Luna Tiger pointed out, it made the "solution" to the situation seem like a cheap copout that could have been used much earlier.

Oh, I can fanwank/retcon my way around this, given enough time to ponder, but it's a little exhausting to think about, considering how easy it would have been for the writers to get things consistent. Like, ditch Piloswine's friendliness in the last episode, or give it a reason to get annoyed in this one; have Croagunk stop it with a Brick Break, stunning it before Dawn recalled it...easy as spongecake/whatever that really was.

And is it me, or is Pikachu seeming a bit...passive lately? Why didn't Pikachu charge in after Piplup got creamed? Sure, Mamoswine's half Ground-type, but that's what freakin' Iron Tail is for. You know what I'm afraid of? I fear the writers have started listening to the oft-heard charges that Pikachu is "overused" and "overemphasized," and are trying to downplay Pikachu's involvement in the action as a result....

:ohdear:

On the bright side, if you didn't think too hard about those logic violations, much of the actual episode was highly enjoyable. Especially for TR fans. :crush:

It's been a while since we've seen a full-scale TRio operation with buildings and everything, hasn't it?

Yes it has, and I missed them. This one was particularly clever of our anti-heroes, I thought - "friendship seminars" have so many nonsensical activities already that "trainers stand in that circle, Pokemon stand in the other circle" doesn't seem the least bit outlandish.

And James looked so yummy in his gymnastic getup, I didn't even mind that his hair was almost exactly the same as he usually wears it and by all rights our heroes should have said "hey, what's James doing up there?" (I think it's an inescapable conclusion now that TR has some subconscious psychic power to "cloud twerps' minds" when they're in disguise. NOTHING else makes any sense.)

Also, put me down as someone who thought Brock holding Croagunk's hand was adorable. :ksmile: Happiny was a joy to see as always. And though I miss Turtwig dearly, Grotle is finding a place in my heart. It seems so earnest, and I love that in a character, of any species....

And I have to say...DAMN, Mamoswine is an impressive slab of fresh country bacon. If it weren't psychotic, it'd be the coolest main Pokemon since Sceptile. Hell, forget walking, they could just RIDE it from town to town....

...but I suppose some would then accuse them of being an Avatar retread. :loopy:

AND, as Luna Tiger pointed out, it made the "solution" to the situation seem like a cheap copout that could have been used much earlier.

There is a difference between Seviper loathing a species of Pokemon to a enraged Pokemon. One would have to assume they have the same mind set. What purpose would Mamoswine have for being out of it's Poke ball when it was recalled, it technically couldn't be harmed any more, so really there is no point, because the immediate threat is gone. Because you did notice that the only reason it charged in the first place was because of Yanmega. Who knows maybe Mamoswine wanted to be recalled, who knows what a Poke ball is like.

Seviper is different it couldn't be recalled because of it's mood, it came out because it wanted to come out, so there is no break in continuity. Only if the Pokemon chooses to come out will it come out, other wise it's stuck in the ball.

And as future episodes have proved (if wish to read this, it's not so much a huge spoiler but a character quirk). Mamoswine doesn't give a flying crap if it's sent out or not. Most of the time Mamoswine seems to ignore it's surroundings.

Piplup is the bomb. But of course, it took an entire episode of sheer smack-downs to finally get it into game-mode. And it still gets pummeled, but also gets the thanks it deserves. What's wrong with hoping the Pokemon calms down on it's own? Besides with Mamoswine they did recall it as soon as they could, after all Piplup was the one to confront it, can't really do anything about that until after Piplup got out of the way. And also maybe it's because Brock suddenly came up with the idea, or it could be because Mamoswine is like 4 times bigger than Piloswine, so using Happiny would've been ineffective.

Granted, it does bare a resemblance to a sponge cake (although I can guess that it isn't), unlike 4Kids blantly calling rice balls "sandwiches" when they look nothing of the sort.

What was it called in the original?
