I could never figure out why everyone hated this ep with such a passion to be honest. Sure it's pretty generic, but it has some nice touches in my opinion.

-Monferno! Seeing as how we didn't really get to see enough of the middle stage, it was nice to see him in something other than a battle.

-Nice to see a character of the day who isn't just palsy around Ash and the gang the second they meet.

-No miraculous come from behind BS win. Just a close race.

The COTD's name is Daniel, and overall it's the generic "introduce Pokeathlon in the anime" episode.

I've always worked on the assumption that the writers purposely sabotaged the Pokeathlon in the anime so it wouldn't become more popular than Contests.

Granted they couldn't make Pokeathlon a major quest right in the middle of an arc, but this was the first major sidequest that could have been a threat to Contests stability in the anime.

Its like the writers sabotaged it into one single mediocre episode so nobody would think it would be Contests replacement. I find this hilarious.

Or Pokéathlon is just lame in general? They did their best to make it interesting and they failed. That's all.

i was watching the episode and to me it looked like Snorlax's hurdles were shorter than pikachu's! if that's true then i think Daniel cheated!

In all honesty, I think whoever wrote the episode just plain messed up. There is so much you can do with the Pokeathlon, but they never did. If the 'Thlon returns for Gen V, and becomes the new Contests in the anime, then I hope the rework it and make it what it should be. The Pokeathlon is a lot of fun in-game, and it's a shame it was so lackluster here.

It really gets you wondering how Contests became such a big deal in the anime, yet Pokeathlon gets shoved into a single episode.

If the Pokeathlon had been in R/S instead of Contests, I wonder if May would be some Pokeathelete and this would have stayed through DP.

even so, snorlax winning because of it's fat was a majorly cheap way of winning....does anyone besides me think Daniel is kinda like Shingo from the Johto region? i mean honestly! "science is more important than the feelings of a living creature!" if Misty were there, she would have beat THE CRAP OUTTA HIM for saying something like that....but no! we get an incredibly useless, selfish person like dawn!

And Junki Takegami writes another boring continuity problem episode. There really isn't much to say except that tickle bot from the Safari Zone episode reappeared and I laughed how Snorlax was undubbed for most of the episode.

As for this whole replacing Contests thing, this just isn't girly enough for that to that to happen. Putting their worst writer and worst animator on this episode just shows that they were forced into making this episode to promote an aspect of the games IMO.

contests aren't girly, and the pokeathon isn't jsut for guys. Seriously, why do people think so stereotypically?

I didn't like the way Ash and Brock pretended to have heard of the Pokeathlon in Johto even though they clearly never did, there was nothing even like it.

-Okay, I get that they're training, but I don't get why the trampoline's out in the middle of nowhere, though.

-Daniel sounds familiar, I can't quite put my finger on who it is, though.

-He sure likes science

-Why would you hide a poster behind a curtain?

-Yay for crappy continuity with the whole "we saw Pokeathlon while travelling through Johto"

-Oh, it's Ted Lewis.

-Why'd they replace the second event with... a Spoink bouncing? Entertaining, no?

-The balloon not being able to lift Snorlax was predictable, but I think the fact that I could see it coming a mile away made it such a humorous gag.

I don't see what was so bad about that episode. The Pokeathlon was translated well into anime form. Not something I'd like to see as a recurring challenge per se, but still made for a decent episode.

Ladies and Gentlemen, it's special guest star Weevil Underwood as Daniel. Not really, but tell me that isn't what you thought. "You already knew about the Pokeathlon!?" "Yeah, we've already been through Johto." Bull. Pure bull. Yes, we have to have computers and statistics being no match for instinct. Weighed down by Snorlax. The old "by a body part" gag. Ash yields to others to easily. Give yourself some credibility, man. All in all, representing the pokeathlon with only two events? I know they didn't have time for too many of them, but we could've still framed some of them. Oh well, not much of a loss really. Pretty good ep.

I just cannot understand how Snorlax was faster than Pikachu. Or could jump just as well over the hurdles.

Yay someone named Daniel!

Anyway, this ep was pretty good. I really loved snorlax I thought he was hilarious!

Maybe whilst Jessie does contests, James might do pokeathlons in the Isshu region?
Ugh, not a chance. IIRC this episode showed that there won't be any Pokethlon side-quest in the anime, ever. He would had expressed some interest in it at least.

-Damn. A missed opportunity for Piplup abuse.
-Nooo stop using the Pokedex!
-Repeated Dawn's comment about Daniel a couple of times, still can't understand what she says. Her smile afterwards makes her seem a bit fake though :p
-So Daniel likes to blindfold his Pokemon..
-Oh Dawn, I wished I'd never heard of Pokeathlon too.
-Oh no! My Snorlax is tired! Tragedy! Horror! Yeah, shut up.
-Dawn's eyelashes look different in this episode.
-What? Was that Spoink really necessary?
-A Snorlax can run faster than Ash
-Oh look. They are now friends. Yaay.

Meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeh. What is the point of these episodes when Ash doesn't even win? And no, I do not want this to replace contests next gen. No.
