Review S13 EP05: Playing the Performance Encore!

Looks like we have another DP136/150/151/152 going on here. All of the original music and silence has been kept so far except the title screen.

People there are sleeping, why do you ask now?

The episode was only in a MINUTE. The time people usually ask is within an hour before/after before the episode starts.

Yay, almost as I expected!! They kept that piano music when Flame-Ice keeps failing!! And Capture On!! Great episode!! Even when I keep putting two exclamation marks at the end of every sentence!!

Now this is more like it. This is easily my favorie DP Contest and the music was a big reason why. The movie 10 BGM used when Dawn started freaking out over her hair was perfect not to mention whatever cool scary music was used during the encore scene. This was an excellent way for Dawn to get over her nickname while bringing back an awesome rival. :) Oh, and getting that 5th ribbon is great too. :p (Though saying "all mine!" sounds much too conceited.)

It would've been nice if the dub had translated Urara calling Musashi "Candy onee-sama", but I guess we'll lose that little character quirk. :/

And good luck getting that badge Ash. :p

I find myself liking Ursula in this ep way more than I ever liked Harley. She just comes off as a snobbish brat, which alone makes her a ideal rival for Dawn.

Love how Flame Ice looks, shame we don't see it after this ep.

Maybe it's just me, but it looks like poor Jessie might have lost because her pokemon just weren't strong enough, rather than a lack of talent. {Not saying I don't feel for Seviper and Yanmega though}

8.5/10

I really loved how they kept all of the japanese dub music in except for the title music but I think they kept the english one because TPCi had to adjust some Japanese dub music just a little bit. Overall, I loved this episode and I always had a feeling that the english dub of this episode would be outstanding. Fortunately for me, it was.

So we kept all music except the title card.

The Contest Hall scene at the ribbon ceremony has a nice 3D touch to it.

Epic final battle. It probably surpassed VS Lila.

One of my favorite contest episodes! <3 Super saiyan Pokemon + Character developement for Dawn = Epic episode.

I knew TCPi would do a great job on this episode. I think they keep most if not all music from the original. And the points leading up to the contest battle was amazing. It made me realize how fond I am of Ursula and her character.

And Jessie had some really nice appeals in this contest. :D

I agree. It probably surpassed her battle with Lila because of the amount of Japanese dub music that was used. LOL
But yeah the ribbon ceremony had a cool 3D touch to it. I just wish I had a big screen tv and Cartoon Network HD just to see it even better haha

Jessie's appeals were pretty cool...her outfit still sucks though.

Anyway, I think Dawn should've come up with a better name than Flame Ice. How about Burning Crystal, or Crimson Frost?

This time only a shorter post as I want to watch the World cup quarterfinals, but nevertheless I'll take the time to review my most favorite series:

Yes, this was truly a great episode!
No doubt that all contests should be at least two episodes long. Thinking back to all those rushed one-episode contests, it angers me why they couldn't be longer considering how great it is when there's enough time left for a proper appeal AND battle round!
Again ,I was amazed by Jessie! Very well done, Rocket girl, you're getting more and more clever. I dare say even a little bit sophisticated ^^

But, unfortunately, there was also one point of criticism:
Plusle and Minun were WAY TOO overpowered, almost to a point where it was no longer comprehensible.
I mean, sure, Plusle an Minun's strength is dodging because they are small and agile and I also understand that Helping Hand MIGHT be a powerful move, but the way it was shown in the episode was definitely way too exaggerated! Writers, don't tell me that a Pokemon with such a massive body can't just rush into those two lightweights and knock them out, even with Helping Hand activated.
To make thing worse, they also wanted uns to believe that Plusle and Minun had the power to throw back the massive mammoth by attacking it with Spark...
That's as if you wanted to "attack" a skyscraper with a needle and expected it to collapse. (fitting example, isn't it ^^)

I say it again, all in all the episode was very good, but the way Plusle and Minun were handled somehow reminded me of the Psychic Pokemon in the old days, which were also portrayed as almost invincible.

6.5 /7 out of 10 points

Music kept? They really do know to leave the best episodes alone.

- Super rodents away!
- Have we ever actually had anyone call something a formation other than Drew and Ursula in a contest?
- Yes Ash but it isn't good enough :p
- We should have gotten more bitchiness backstage me thinks. Or just have had Ursula turn up ealier in DP and kill Kenny.
- Wait, what did they say makes the ice shine? Made me wtf a bit.
- I always thought that Encore looked really weird on the affected Pokés.
- Everything just gets better and better after Ursula explains Encore. This is a perfect episode.
- I was very glad that Dawn's Pokémon got her out of it rather than Ash or Brock.
- "...straight from the heart!" Ew, cheesy :p
- I actually love it when we see the rodents hit across the floor.
- The time limit is biased!
- Well they clearly aren't the best are they Ursula? :D
- No girls, I'll win the Grand Festival.
- Really Brock? xD

Best DP contest battle. Maybe even the best contest battle altogether. Throw in a great warm up with Jessie at the beginning and you've got a perfect episode. 10 out of 10.

I'm glad that the dub kept the music for the episode. If only they did this more often...
This is obviously the best DP contest battle, and it's very refreshing to see Plusle and Minun in a "battle" situation (its previous appearances have been mainly as supporting characters in a movie, or cheerleaders in two filler episodes).
I have to say, Ursula does a really damn good job in raising her pokemon for contests. It's such a shame that she keeps losing to Dawn each and every time for whatever "unique combination" she pulls off.

I have loved this episode and contest ever I seen an amv featuring it. That said, I love Ursula, and feel sad that she can't win aginst Dee-Dee/ Diamond Dandruff.

Something just doesn't seem right here. Oh well, the contest point system has always made no sense. Using Encore is pretty nasty. Ursula never ceases to disappoint. This was a very DEM laden victory, but they understandably had no other choice. It was an ok ep overall. Sorry, Ash, the final gym ep won't happen for a very long time in the dub.

It was weird how Plusle and Minun seemed to say "PIKAAAAA" in their double battle formation against Jessie, but a good episode anyways :).

-Love that we see the Jessie/Ursula battle
-Jessie's first attack is really cool
-Plusle and Minum are a really good choice for contests, everything they do produces sparkles. All they have to do is shake their butts and fireworks appear.
-That rolling formation thing was weird... and really cool!
-music with the failed ice flame is really good. And failed ice flame also looks pretty.
-Love how Dawn is practicing flame ice after the battle. And adore the way Ursula is lurking around! She has a great future ahead as a spy if contests don't work out :p
-Oh God, this is the best contest rival interaction in the whole of DP!!
-Love the beginning of this battle. Dawn's combination is great, and a surprise.
-Use of encore is very smart. But it looks so weird and shiny!!
-Hehe Mamoswine has the same hair as Dawn!
-Ok, Dawn's on the floor screaming, and the audience is just sitting there smiling xD
-"Straight from the heart"? Bleeh. But, Dawn's tactic was exactly what I was hoping for.
-Now for the most awesome moment in the whole contest arc!!
-Poor Ursula, the time limit is always against her :(

Ok, on reflexion, this is the best contest battle of DP. I love that its not just one awesome move (flame ice) that saves Dawn, but that she does some great stuff after it (with somescreen, hidden power, etc). That plus a cool combination at the beginning of the battle means the win and the points score didn't seem cheap.
The fact flame ice didn't work at first is also great, especially as it shows how ambitious Dawn is with her contest moves.
The interactions with Ursula and Jessie are also great, the battles weren't at all rushed either. I do feel bad that Ursula never gets a win, as she has a great battle style and brings out the best in Dawn.

This might be the most sparkly contest though. The audience was probably blind by the end of it.

It was pretty meh, but prolly because I was extremely tired this morning. I did like the major comeback Dawn made tho =p

I love it too when the dub keeps the Japanese music... seriously, I reckon one of the directors at TPCi just says "There's nothing wrong with the Japanese music, leave it in" whenever he's in charge of dubbing the episode... unfortunately, if there is then he's not on duty very often.

There's a vocal song during next week's episode. I'll be interested to see how that's handled.
