Review S14 EP17: Scraggy—Hatched to Be Wild!

On their journey to Castelia City, Ash's Egg starts to glow. However, when it hatches into Scraggy, Ash soon finds that his new Pokémon isn't what he expected as Scraggy seems to be a very angry Pokémon and is quick to attack the other group's Pokémon. Despite this, it is still very weak so Ash decides to train it. Will Scraggy become a vital part of Ash's team?

This was a great episode. Scraggy hatching on my birthday is beyond awesome.

Scraggy was a pretty fun character, too. And unlike most other episodes, this one didn't feel incredibly rushed.

Good episode! Scraggy is a funny little thing. I like how aggressive he is. It was really funny when Scraggy kept battling Ash’s Pokémon, and when he turned around to look at Axew and Iris, Axew hid in her hair.

Axew and Scraggy will be interesting training partners. I wonder how much they will develop that…..

I enjoy Axew and Scraggy a lot. I always liked Axew's voice and facial expressions, especially his eyes. Scraggy is also a Pokémon practically made for facial expressions.

We also see more of Ash's Snivy than we've seen in a while, and we get to see her work together and interact with Ash's other Pokémon. I love her constant "screw all yall" or "I'm bored of this" and "I'm better than you and don't need to prove it." expressions and attitude. I hope we get to see more of Snivy and Tepig in the future outside of battle situations as we've gotten to see with Ash's Oshawott.

I'm also extremely pleased with all the Team Rocket action in the latest episode. Even if they don't appear in every episode or play a major role in every episode I'm really enjoying their role in the series to this point and can tell its building up to something big.

Since TRio was almost virtually absent throughout the entire episode, there had to be some obstacle to make this pokemon's introduction not only worth watching, but also time-consuming for the writers as well.. In which case, there had to be some reason as to why a pokemon that hatches out of an egg this time does not mesh with any of the pokemon Ash and the others have on them. At least with Ash’s Phanpy, or Dawn’s Cyndaquil, or Brock’s Happiny, these hatched pokemon were able to easily get along with the majority of the group’s pokemon. This transition flowed easily since the writers decided (back then) that each of these pokemon were contemporaries of the predecessors before them, on the grounds of screen-time, overall capacity, and brute strength.

After witnessing this repetitive cycle take its course many times in the past, I actually welcome the writers’ decision with this pokemon this time around. It is actually very interesting that we have a newly-hatched pokemon that is, indeed, justifiably inexperienced, instead of being on almost equal ground with every other pokemon Ash and co. may have on them at the time. Scraggy's mannerisms could be likened to how Dawn's Buizel reacted when he first interacted with members of the group's team back in DP, except Scraggy does not have the skill nor power to back them up. This contrast not only establishes an ironic yet dry comic relief associated with the character to make Scraggy more indelible, but it also provides the new pokemon with an outlet to which it could be better developed entirely.

Ash's Scraggy, in particular, hated not being able to show its strength. As a species, Scraggy tend to headbutt anything that they get into eye contact with. This characteristic allowed Ash's Scraggy to get itself into trouble, but at the same time, keep it isolated from the rest of the group who tried to interact with it. Scraggy is not just an easy-going, young pokemon like Ash's Phanpy or Dawn's Cyndaquil were set out to be when they hatched ot of their eggs. He may be naive and inexperienced, but Scraggy's actions were out of a personal desire to become stronger, rather than to please his trainer or out of personal survival. In fact, Scraggy's actions throughout the entire episode show that he did not care about anybody else around him in the least bit.

If this is the case, any pokemon could have been used to serve as the opposition to Scraggy's recklessness. Some may ask, “Why would the writers then use a group of Galvantula as that opposition?” Well, the writers needed to approach Scraggy’s helplessness in the face of such an obstacle by giving it a true marking of its inexperience in combat. What better way would the writers convey this message than through giving the pokemon a (temporary) status condition, such as paralysis? This predicament allowed Ash and the others to worry about the pokemon's safety, and try their best to bond with the pokemon that had initially brushed them off. It allowed a bonding experience that was rarely seen with any other pokemon that had just hatched out of an egg (sans Phanpy, but that too was caused by TRio's involvement, which was clearly not the case here). Nevertheless, since this is Scraggy we are talking about; this pokemon refuses to back down from a fight and challenges those wild pokemon again. This time, however, Ash and the others anticipated Scraggy's decision and decided to save it from being attacked. Scraggy felt slightly grateful to the pokemon that he had tried to attack before.

The true underdog of this episode was Axew, a pokemon that had very little spotlight at this point in the series. Some may argue that Axew and Scraggy had a defined relationship here, but I merely saw it as nothing more than two opposing personalities clashing. As the youngest pokemon of the group, Axew felt happy that he would be able to see a pokemon egg hatch for the first time. Iris told Axew to look after that pokemon, as if Axew was the pokemon's "older brother." Axew was the one who knocked over Scraggy's egg from the cliff to begin with, due to his excitedness, and naturally the young pokemon felt a bit guilty for what he had done. To make up for this mistake, and to live up to his trainer's expectations, Axew was the one who attempted to bond with Scraggy first. Scraggy's opinion of Axew was not mutual, and the pokemon simply brushed Axew off as if it was just another pokemon to attack. To Scraggy, Axew was simply a much sharper thorn on his side than the other pokemon that had pestered him a while back.

Axew was the one who alerted Ash and co. about Scraggy's initial disappearance, but this was done out of a sense of personal responsibility (as Scraggy's "older brother," as Iris put it) more so than any immediate concerns for its safety. Axew did not go out of his way to battle alongside the other pokemon on Scraggy's behalf, and had only alerted Iris and the rest of the trainers that Scraggy was missing. Axew was virtually powerless in this situation; yet his existence in this episode hastened the group's decision-making behind this incident. If it were not for Axew, who knows what would have happened to Ash's Scraggy during the first battle against the Galvantula? Scraggy was slightly more than Axew's "sparring buddy" in this episode, and vice-versa. Axew was literally the plot device to which Ash and co., clueless as they appear to be most of the time, were aware of Scraggy's condition (from the pokemon being hatched to the pokemon disappearing on its own to battle wild pokemon). Axew was, as Iris was putting it, looking out for Scraggy without getting his hands dirty in a fight. They are simply more than compliments to each other; again, Axew's responsibility could have been instilled to any pokemon that hatched from that egg, and not just Scraggy in particular. This was why I felt that Axew and Scraggy did not bond on that level during this episode.

Overall, this episode was very interesting. It was more than just the simple "welcome this pokemon to the main party through an obstacle" plotline that the writers had experimented with in the past. Scraggy's weaknesses have yet to be tackled as of the end of this episode, unlike the other pokemon that Ash had acquired this way. This allows Ash and Scraggy to work together to improve not only the strength of the pokemon's attacks, but also to bond with one another and with other pokemon as well. Scraggy has such an interesting personality, so it would be an utter shame if it just disappeared into the traces of stereotyped monotony akin to the pokemon that had hatched out of eggs before it.

I still don't like Scraggy and I still think Ash should have Sunglasses Krokorok like some of us thought, but I love his interactions with the other Pokemon! Oshawott's reaction to being headbutted is priceless!

I really love Scraggy's and Seger's (bonus points for keeping his name) voices. TPCI did another great casting job.

This was a really cute and entertaining episode. Scraggy is such a crazy character that you just can't help but wonder who/what he'll attack next. I also love that he knows Leer since those kinds of attacks are usually ignored.

That second Rocket scene felt so random and forced. I think their stuff could've been paced a bit better.

I loved the episode. Scraggy is such a cute, funny little Pokemon, that has such a temper. Its facial expressions made me lol. My favorite part was when Axew and Scraggy battled, It was cute how Axew got so excited to battle Scraggy. I also lol'd when Snivy pushed Scraggy away like it was nothing, priceless. Id love to see Ash raise Scraggy up more and Iris to raise Axew so maybe a more epic battle could occur between the two in the future. That might even make an interesting little subplot.

Scraggy is my least favourite pokemon of gen 5, so when I found out he was getting a scraggy I was pretty annoyed. This episode wasn't bad as I like Garvantula but I don't like scraggy.

It's weird how this egg hatched with no problem, but back in DP Brock's happiny needed to be rushed to a pokemon center.

Overall, this was a cute, funny, and entertaining episode. I love Scraggy. It's so cute. I think it's a bully in a baby Pokemon's body.

The TRio part was also cool. What was that Team Rocket Professor named?

Were the egg hatching scenes always like that? It looks different. I thought the egg would actually get cracked. I noticed that it didn't.

I gotta say, I loved all the reactions to Scraggy's way of saying ''Hello, nice to meet you'', but I I love Pidove's reaction the most. Pidove, like most birds, is evidently a flight over fight creature. The Galvantula group was awesome, though I feel a bit sorry for them. Really how would you react if someone came up to your house, and just started hitting it, even if it wasn't really doing anything to it?

I didn't like Scraggy's voice (sounds too deep for a Pokemon that looks like a kid), but I though his personality was spot-on. Ash better evolve him, though. Scrafty is probably my favorite Pokemon to date, and I wanna see in motion.

Also, Axew has overstayed his welcome. It's voice is more annoying than diarrhea.

I liked this episode. Scraggy is such a loveably aggressive little bugger, and his voice isn't too bad either. Also, am I the only one that thinks Galvantula in the English dub sounds like Dr. Claw from Inspector Gadget?

Scraggy is just downright silly! But to me, the highlight of this episode was Galvantula's debut. They're so awesome, especially with their eyes glowing when they retreat!
