BW064 - Bulbapedia, the community-driven Pokémon encyclopedia

Ash and friends volunteer to explore the anicent ruins beyond Chargestone Cave with Cedric Juniper (father of Professor Juniper), who is searching for the location where Zekrom and the hero of Unovan legend made communication. The ruins, however, contain many dangerous traps, and pokemon who are fiercely protective against intruders. Will they be able to brave the ruins, discover the meeting point of legend, and make it out alive?

We got 4 pieces of Japanese music, and Stuart Zagnit/Stan Hart (Oak's old VA) back on the show As Cedric Junpier.

This is surreal. It's eccentric Prof. Oak. So that whole thing was to travel a path shaped like Zekrom like it's the Nazca lines or something. Interesting ep.

Did they leave in the shot of Satoshi imagining himself as a rotting skeleton?

Yes they did. Cilan's "Worse then moldy bread" line made me laugh and why was Iris so saucy in this episode?

Well Ash was certainly very puny this ep. The scene with the two bridges had me laughing out loud. I would say this is probably one of my favorite episodes of these season. Especially since it contained two of my favorite 5th gen pokes, Cofagrigus and Sigilyph.

+Beautiful animation/scenery.
+Everyone had a chance to shine.
+Mirror Move
-Episode commerical breaks were a bit disconnected...

So it wasn't just me.

Did anyone else think that Cedric was a bit of a jerk? And after TPTB had turned Alder into a doofus. I shudder to think of what's next.

And yes, they did steal the boulder from Raiders of the Lost Ark. Just like that AG ep when Our Gang first met Brandon. There were also echoes of that DP ep when Our Gang met Cynthia's grandma (I think, as I haven't watched that ep in a while). Is that all the source material?

This was a pretty interesting episode. Very adventurous.

Cedric sure is nice, though I didn't notice Cedric's name actually mentioned anywhere in this episode.

So I was saying Sigilyph's name wrong the whole time!!! Sigilyph and Cofagrigus were pretty cool.

Nice that more cliffhangers are being added in the anime. Just like last episode with the introduction of Cedric. This time, with Krokorok.

I cried because Stan Hart(Original Dub Prof Oak) played Cedric.

but yeah fun episode!

Glad to know I wasn't alone as well. :ksmile:

I did. The dude was frustrating. Maybe he was hoping they'd have fun, but it kind of came off as mean.

Not sure about the rest of it, but I'm pretty sure the announcer said it at the beginning.

OMG!! I was gonna say that cedrics voice actor should also voice oak, but he actually is oak's VA :)

Does this mean jimmy will leave oak alone now??

HOPEFULLY
WOOO

Here's something that's really peculiar... the subtitles at one point don't match what Iris says at the point after the gang are dropped into the holding area. Here's the exchange on-screen:

Cedric Juniper: No, I deliberately took the Golden Dark Stone so we'd wind up here.
Pikachu: Pika!
Ash: That's why you did it? You're awesome Professor!
Iris: I think he's making it up as he goes.

Now here's the same conversation according to the subtitles.

Cedric Juniper: No, I deliberately took the Golden Dark Stone so we'd wind up here.
Pikachu: Pika!
Ash: That's why you did it? You're awesome Professor!
Iris: An awesome spin doctor if you ask me...

I wonder what gives? Maybe it was the original line, but was quickly re-dubbed because to be honest I doubt most of the target audience know what a spin doctor is... or maybe the subbing company just screwed up. Who knows.

Moving on, this is a pretty awesome episode even if Cedric Juniper did come across as a jerk who willingly risked the lives of a bunch of kids in order to explore a cave. The setting is great, the story was well told and the animation was pretty sweet. Also nice to see the shot of Satoshi and Pikachu rotting was kept from the Japanese version... you just know 4Kids would have cut that.

Strangely, Who's That Pokemon was Sigilyph while Dare Da? was Desukarn / Cofagrigus. While I understand that it wasn't kept before because the Pokemon had already been the subject of a WTP, the fact it wasn't this episode where the Pokemon hadn't appeared before was surprising.

I really liked Cedric Juniper in this ep. He's kind of crazy, but he seems a lot of fun to be around. =)

I really love adventured-centered episodes, so of course I raised my hopes very high...and was disappointed in the end. I for one would call this a rather bad episode and that's why I'm surprised what unexpectedly positive response it is met with in this thread.

The story had huge potential, and could have been a copy of "Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade", one of my favorite adventure movies. But look what we got instead: A goofy and partly even dishonest professor who enjoys seeing other people getting into trouble, a scenery that, to be honest, wasn't animated beautifully in any way and last but not least, a plot that turned out to be neither exciting nor plausible because it lacked the necessary coherence. Honestly, it appeared to me that the writers just put together different, loosely-connected scenes that didn't really make sense as a whole. The booby traps seemed cheap and predictable, the professor's intentions never really became clear and the underlying background story about that hero was... well, was there a real background story in the first place? I guess nobody would have noticed if they had just left it out.
In short: This episode was a waste of potential and given that I love adventures and think that Pokemon needs much more episodes revolving around exploration and adventure, I'm really disappointed and angry. Couldn't the writers have just planned this as a two parter with exciting twist and turns and a well thought out background story? I say yes and it would have been so easy.

I got a nice suprise when I heard Stuart, so TPCi, please let Stuart Zagnit reprise his old role because he is Professor Oak! (& Cedric Juniper LOL) :-D

Ugh, Cedric is even more irritating in the anime than he was in the games. >_>

Anyway...this was a rather peculiar episode overall. I had no idea Cofagrigus could walk on its hands, though; that was rather startling. And....why? Why was Sigilyph's voice so...stupid? ._.

For an episode that included two of my favorite Gen 5 Pokémon, I have to say I was kind of disappointed...

Also, F--K SKELETONS D: *shudder*

Honestly, I LOVED both of these guys because of how the anime portrayed them. Cedric was pretty unremarkable in the games, and while I liked Alder in the games already, I don't mind them giving a bit more personality to the Champ as opposed to just making him a flat serious character like they did with Steven and Lance.

In fact, I'd say Best Wishes really hits it out of the park when it comes to older men...Alder, Cedric, Don George, Skyla's Grandfather (in the Misaltron Tower episode), and the scientist in the Elgyem episode are all characters I really liked. No surprise, the anime has a pretty good record with old men characters like Sullivan from the Whiscash episode and Professor Westwood.
