WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Gov. Sarah Palin announced Friday that she will step down as Alaska's chief executive by the end of the month. She will not seek election to a second gubernatorial term in 2010.

Palin, a Republican, was elected governor in 2006. She was tapped as Arizona Sen. John McCain's vice presidential running mate last year.

Palin said she was transferring authority to Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell, who will be sworn in at the Governor's Picnic on July 25.

"She thinks she has accomplished goals she has set forward," a source, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said. "She sees what a positive influence she has had on people's lives from traveling the country in the last year."

As the 2008 Republican vice presidential nominee, Palin has been considered one of the front-runners for the GOP nomination in 2012. Her decision not to seek another term as governor is sure to stoke speculation that Palin is seriously eyeing a run for the White House.

In an interview last month with CNN's Wolf Blitzer, Palin said she was unsure about her re-election bid because she needed to focus on her state and her family.

"So, no decision yet on either 2010 or let alone 2012?" Blitzer asked.

"No decision that I'd want to announce today," Palin responded.

Palin catapulted on the national stage last August when McCain, the Republican presidential nominee, chose her as his running mate

All I've been able to say in the last five minutes is "glee".

I have to wonder why Liberals seem to despise her so much. I can't fathom it.

This is saddening to hear, hopefully the Lt. Governor will be able to keep up the work =D

I actually liked Sarah Palin. I don't know why so many people hated her, I could never get a serious answer. Sure she made some mistakes, but that's a human thing to do. I mean, everyone else made mistakes too. Honestly, I hope everything works out for her. Good luck Sarah!

Smells like she's going for a senate seat to me, as preparation for a prez campaign.

Do. I. Care? Heck no. Never liked Palin. Her beliefs in raising a family were as wrong as you can possibly get. I'm glad she's showing some sense and stepping down. And maybe we'll get lucky and miss Karaboe Barbie will vanish into obscurity. And not run for prez in 2012.

I think what Phoenicks was getting at is that the VAST majority of president campaigners and elected presidents were governors. Jumping from Senator to Pres is rare history wise.

This is Palin. I wouldn't be surprised if she's trying to imitate the last presidential election.

Oh come off it. Really, I dont understand why everybody has such a problem with her. Even if you dont agree with her views/statements, is bashing her going to solve anything? Or will people just find you more and more annoying?

I wonder?

Anyway, I dont have much to say about her stepping down. If she wanted it, then good for her. If she didnt want to or felt pressured to, then its too bad.

Yes, in general, it's governors, not senators.

However, in Palin's specific case, she has been a governor, and reactions to her last Veep run made it very plain that people took a dim view on her lack of national and international experience ; that they considered her a hick from Smalltown, Nowherestate. Moving to Washington and a Senate seat for a few years is probably her best shot at silencing those critics.

Possibly also, after the fiasco of her interviews during her veep run, she figures she need to bring herself back in the public view, but in an unobtrusive sort of way. She can't as Gov of Aslaska (because people expect Alaska to stay out of public view), but as a senator, she would be in a good position to be in public view without being obtrusive about it.

(A chance: she could also crash and burn in Washington).

Maybe she's going into hiding to avoid all those PETA people still angry about the turkey... :)

I still can't figure out why liberals seem to hate her so much. In the course of eleven months they threw enough venom at her to kill thousands of Black Mambas. They hated on her more in those eleven months than they did on Bush in eight years.

Yes, the last presidential election where the conservative didn't turn in vast numbers, essentialy giving Obama the election. Palin shouldn't want to replicate that.

Wait, what happened to your name? I swear I was looking at your username and it said Ryuu, but just as I went to type this up it changed back to Ryuutakesh!. Congrats on partially changing it back, I guess.

Well, this is all speculation based on the assumption that she's preparing for a presidential run. That's not confirmed yet, it's only a possibility. You could be right, but let's wait and see if you are or not.

They were scared of her. McCain's campaign was scared of her because she was more popular than he was. Obama was scared of her because she was drawing in bigger crowds than he was at the height of his popularity. She was huge, so they tried to crash her. Unfortunately for McCain, it worked, some voters didn't vote for him because of her, and no one votes for the president because of their VP, so he didn't really get any long-term benefits from picking her up.

Which would be why I said "smell like". IT is, indeed, a guess based on how things looks like, and certainly not a certainty.

Though on further thinking about it, there is also a possibility she just got sick of politics.

And FFS - we were scared of her not because she looked more popular than anybody, but because she was running for Veep with great odds of actually becoming president, very limited qualifications (no post-grad education, and a lot of trouble completing even that (four colleges over five years), no apparent interest in serious news (can't name a newspaper she read), her political experience limited to small-town politics and two-three years as governor of a very remote, very small (in population) state, zero foreign politics experience, very strange ideas about the constitution (re: her statement on what the veep do)), and with an attitude that was very, very similar to that of one Georges W. Bush (flamboyantly religious, borderline hick-ish, anti-intellectual, war-happy, pro-oil, brutally dismissive of anyone who disagreed with her...).

Now, I don't know if you'll remember this, but a lot of us really, really, really loathed Bush at that point. (approval rating of...31% I think?).

Why do liberals hate Palin so much? We don't hate her, we love her. She's the perfect face to put on the Republican Party. She's an ignorant attention whore who doesn't know when to shut up. We couldn't ask for a better godsend.

I know the current senator up for election next year and said she's letting Palin take her seat. We'll have to see if Palin can get her in the primary if the senate is her goal. Her overall numbers have been dropping like a stone in Alaska, but she's still popular among Republicans. Could the Dems grab another Alaska senate seat thanks to Republican stupidity?

They were scared of her. McCain's campaign was scared of her because she was more popular than he was.
Which is really, really sad. :p

Seen a couple posts wondering why people hate Sarah Palin so much... here the first few reasons that come to mind:

• She's far too much of an idiot to hold public office. See this video...

• She holds unreasonable viewpoints based in religion, i.e. that on abortion, gay marriage, evolution, etc. that she would love nothing more than to force on the people of the U.S. despite the separation of church and state.

• She shot wolves from a fucking helicopter.

Again, the first few that come to mind.
