Satoshi Is Not The Same

I certainly agree that Ash/Satoshi is different in each season (or generation, if that is the term), but I fail to comprehend how his facial expressions, regardless of amount or quality, correlate with him as a character. Could someone explain this to me, please?

The worst thing about SM Ash to me is a lack of drive he rarely trains his pokemon and when they are getting trained they train without him. He doesn't seem to care about doing the trials. And because he rarely trains his pokemon it doesn't feel like he earn some of his wins. To me I find XY Ash better because even does he has less personality he has a drive for the things he does and does things to complete his goal.

I’d take AG Ash over both. At least he had both a dynamic personality, many funny moments, some character development and actually focused on his main goal.
This is what I prefer as well. Ash definitely had a goofy side as well as some flaws and we also saw him develop as a character as well.

XY(Z) Ash was my least favourite, his design looked more like a teenager than a 10 year old boy.

Sun & Moon Ash is the most adorable looking one and his appearance matches his age perfectly.

Also all those expressions in SM are fun and gives more life to, not only Ash, but the entire series.

Sun & Moon Satoshi is my favorite! I never cared much about him before, but now he is my precious son.

I find it funny how all the expressions in the images you put are basically the same (with the biggest difference being that in one Saatoshi has his mouth closed). They tried too hard to make him look cool that they forgot what makes a character enjoyable to watch in the long run.

I prefer XY Satoshi. At least then I get a sense that he has grown from his past adventures. Plus, he may not exhibit a childlishly energetic attitude, but he compensates for that by having many cool moments.

And I must be one of the few who really despises SM Satoshi. Not just because of his wacky facial expressions that fall flat, but most of the time he just fades in the background or, at least, he doesn't stand out a lot. Least he's not as bad as B/W Satoshi, I'll say that much. Nothing could be as bad as that.

Besides if I wanted to see Satoshi with a funny personality, exaggerated expressions, but not to the point of ridiculousness, while still having plenty of development, I'd just go back and watch the original series, thank you very much,

Agreed. I think SM Ash is really flanderized and it's too much for my taste. The OG Ash did a great job at balancing his funny quirks along with his goal of becoming a Pokemon master, whenever that seriousness was required or appreciated to see. Here, it's just...gags on gags on gags. I wouldn't say that's much of a personality as it is an effort to evoke laughs from a targeted demographic.

But as for the original reason of this thread, well-that's just the art for this saga. It tends to change over the course of the series, as well as in movies. Now do I like SM Ash? No, not really. Especially coming after the very detailed saga of XY(Z), in terms of animation. However, I don't think Ash has a "normal" look or "usual self" because of the continuing change in animation.

I really like the Alolan Ash - he has more emotions and he acts more like a little kid which I prefer from time to time however I was impressed by XY Ash's seriousness with the hint of a 'little kid'. I don't really have a problem and I like both. :p I totally get why others don't like him though, I guess sometimes radical change is a shock to the system and the fact that his personality has changed.

Surely the writers can incorporate his drive/ambitions from XY and his personality from SM without having to resort to one extreme over the other?
