No one has made a topic yet (which probably already shows how little most mainstream anime fans are going to care) but Satoshi Kon, director of Paprika, Paranoia Agent, and Tokyo Godfathers, has passed away. There is no reported cause of death so far but I've been seeing most people say cancer and heart attack. He was one of my favorite directors of all time as well as many others.
Since his death is such an impact on the anime industry I feel he should have his own topic and not just be a post in the celebrity memorial topic.
Whether you liked his work or not all I ask is for you to be tasteful in this topic.

Mod edit: Found an article on ANN:

Jim Vowles, a member of the Otakorp Board of Directors for the Otakon convention, has announced on Tuesday that director Satoshi Kon has passed away. Kon was 47. The staff of Otakon confirmed his passing with MADHOUSE studio founder Masao Maruyama. Maruyama had wrote on his Twitter account on Tuesday night in Japan that an important director of the studio had suddenly passed away. However, Maruyama declined to name the director at the time.

Kon began working as a manga creator on such works as Kaikisen (1990) before deciding to delve into the anime industry with the script and art direction of "Magnetic Rose," a segment of Katsuhiro Otomo's Memories (1995). He first drew worldwide attention with his feature film directorial debut, Perfect Blue, in 1997. He would follow that with a string of critically acclaimed anime projects: Millennium Actress (2001), Tokyo Godfathers (2003), Paranoia Agent (2004), and Paprika (2006). At the time of passing, Kon was working at MADHOUSE on a new feature film called Yume-Miru Kikai.

ANN interviewed Kon in 2008 as he was beginning work on Yume-Miru Kikai.

Heard about this a few hours ago, quite sad. I wasn't a huge fan of his work but his stuff was always unique.

Wow. This... this really sucks. I was a big fan of Millenium Actress and his other stuff. It's a shame he died that early.

Yeah. I hope they find a way to finish his last movie. It was supposed to be his last one and I remember seeing in a interview how proud he was of it.

Perfect Blue is one of my favorite films of all time. It's a tragedy to lose such a talent so soon.

I hope that his last film is completed. From what I heard, it's supposed to be centered around robots, rather than humans, which piques my interest.

ANN has posted about his final letter that was put up on his site. He died from pancreatic cancer. He was told he had half a year to live at most back in May and the director of Madhouse said he would do whatever it takes to finish the movie if he died in the process.
Here is a link to the ANN article that has part of the letter in a clean translation and a link to the letter itself:

I havnt read all of it yet because I would prefer to read it cleanly not jilted and stiff like the way Google and Bablefish translate it.
From what I have read though its very emotional and touching and his last sentence just brings you to tears.

Why such a talented guy had to pass away so this early... I loved his every movie and Paranoia Agent so much. This was quite a shock :(.

At least its possible that some good can come out of it. I've already seen some people start to watch some of his movies that never have before.

That doesn't make his death a good thing. :/

When I saw the news on Twitter, I was stunned. Still am, actually. :(

I didnt say it was a good thing I said it was something good to come out of it. Doesnt mean that I would have preferred that over his death its just trying to find a tiny silver lining in a horribly dark cloud.

Was awful to see him go, he was one of my favorite directors.

Madhouse is gonna make sure his final movie gets finished though, so we still have one more coming.

Almost shed a girly tear when I heard the news. I was planning watch Paranoia Agent at some point in the near future and then this happened, I was like /sob.

Aww, man. :| Such a shame to see him go, especially at a relatively young age. I haven't seen all that much of his works, but have adored what I have. RIP.

Dang. 47 is too early to die, plus when even you're an awesome person working on anime.

Yeah, 47 is too early :(
I really enjoyed Perfect Blue.
R.I.P

Thanks.

I did not know about this either, RIP to him. I loved Perfect Blue and Paprika. :(

And I found out a few minutes ago after my break that Peter Fernadez from speed racer died at 83 this past july.

Wow O_O. I did not know this!!
I loved Paprika and Paranoia Agent. Now I'm kind of sad ._. such a great mind. May he rest in peace.
