If he was written the way he was in DP then BW could be more well received. Satoshi would not throw Monster Balls without a fight first.

Other things could be different in this series.

I always felt that since Satoshi originally went to Isshu on vacation and only decided to compete in the league once he was there, he seemed to take it less seriously than he did in Sinnoh. Then when he returned to Masara Town and reflected on his journey he realized he had been slacking and decided to step-up his game in Kalos (and I think this was in the dialogue? I can't really remember), which explains his attitude in XY. This could also explain why he's more laid-back in Alola because he also started off on vacation here.

Oh sure, a lot of it has to do with tone/writing differences among series, but this at least kind of gives an in-universe reason why Satoshi's personality/competence has been more sporadic since DP ended.

His competence is something I could forgive. There were tons of things that just didn't work. The cast, the script, the battles, the tone, and awful characterization ruined the season for me.

Team Rocket and Satoshi were OOC the entire season. The final goodbye episode was terribly written, and the cast had no chemistry in the end.

When Hikari showed up, she was also OOC.

It started great to me, but it ended up being the worst season Pokemon ever produced.

For me, it felt like a badly written fan fiction full of Mary Sues, OOC canon compliant characters, and emotions that were hardly there.
