As a fan of the graphic novels, I have to say, it was as good as I could have hoped for, if not better. Everything important was retained, each character was translated perfectly, the effects were superb, and anything they added would have felt right at home in the source material. It was awesome for both fans of the original books and people who had never heard of them before, which is pretty much all I can ask from an adaptation.
Oh, man, I loved the movie.
I think I've watched it like 4 or 5 times.
My favorite character, besides Scott himself, it's a tie between Wallace and Kim, their roles aren't so big in the movie as in the graphic novels, but they were awesome.
Also, best dialogue ever:
Knives: So.. what do you play?
Young Neil: Wow, ummm... Zelda... Tetris... that's kind of a big question.
I just noticed something.
In the Gideon scene redo, you can here a guy in the background say "The comic books are much better than the movie."
In the first attempt, he just says "The novel is better than the novel."
It was an awesome movie. Not overly complex or groundbreaking, it was largely an excuse to string together a lot of really awesome fight scenes, dialogue and gags. That's just fine - not every movie has to be some deep affair, and it was very entertaining just being what it was. I have to say that Wallace just made that movie, though, and I managed to like the soundtrack despite not being a fan of that genre of music.
If we're allowed to talk about the comics here, the comics also had a lot of great character development. I found it particularly interesting that I started out really hating the main character for being a fairly large jerk and not feeling the slightest bit of remorse over anything, and I was reading it for the first several volumes almost entirely for the other characters. By the end, though, he had genuinely changed into a somewhat-well-adjusted person. Oh, and the novel had all sorts of the same novelty that the movie did. A good series overall.
Well, it was fun for what it was. Though compared to the comics, it was way too short. Some of the exes got little screentime/most of the character development in the story was chopped off etc. The special effects and gags were awesome though so that did justice to the comics.
Also liked how it tried to be more of a gag movie than srz bsns.
