I don't think it's quite clear yet whether Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon will be sequels to Sun & Moon or revamped versions of said titles, akin to Crystal, Emerald, Yellow & Platinum.

Thus which would you prefer and why? Do you think there is enough material for a full fledged sequel? Or did you thoroughly enjoy Sun & Moon and rather see lackluster areas made better?

They look like sequels and they have fusions like sequels I don't know man. They can't be that delicate about word choice in a language they are not speaking. Remember when people thought ORAS might be sequels when I think this the reverse.

Right now, from how GF is wording it, they just seem to be remasters with a different story but takes place at the same time as SM in an alternate universe. But, I would really like it to be a complete sequel to the previous games. Ever since I finished Moon I really wanted a complete sequel because we could maybe see Hau as the kahuna of Melemele, Gladion as the new Aether President, new trainers and areas being developed, maybe gyms being integrated into the trial system, etc. I wouldn't mind a remaster, and that seems what it will end up being, but I would personally prefer a sequel. A remaster just doesn't seem nearly as exciting, in my opinion.

They are definitely not promoting them as sequels and the starting location is the same as before.

ORAS were intially described as "a dramatic story within a spectacular new world" because Hoenn was new to the younger players, and more importantly because it generated false hype. In contrast:

Pokémon Ultra Sun and Pokémon Ultra Moon have been powered up with new additions to the story and features from Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon.

That is fairly clear cut and hardly that exciting for people who care about a proper new story. Masuda calling it an alternative story doesn't support sequels, either, but even that is probably an exaggeration.

It's looking to be more of a remaster. It's obviously not a sequel. I gotta admit tho that I'm a little disappointed it's just a 3rd version of SM. I was hoping for a brand new story to play through rather than a rehash that is only slightly different. that said I'll try and keep my negativity in check until we see more of the games. It could be more then just a regular 3rd version. We'll have to see I suppose.........

The way the Direct clearly made a bigger fuss about a Pokken port than these games, and even implied that the latter are for kids only, is pretty telling about the innovation we should expect. First impression is key.

And on an even more depressing note:

Iwata Asks said:

Like a difference in color—for example, "How about coming out with Pokémon Gray Version?"

Ishihara
Yeah. But lots of players were expecting us to follow the same pattern, so for the first time we decided to try adding a "2" for a pleasant surprise.

Iwata
Something else that's different from the pattern so far is that you're releasing two games. When I first heard that, I couldn't help but say, "Huh? Two?!"

Ishihara
That sort of surprise is what gives this product its newness. I'd like to have Masuda-san and Unno-san talk about what we aimed for in sequels to Pokémon Black Version and Pokémon White Version.

Iwata
All right, Masuda-san?

Masuda
I'm Masuda from Game Freak. As for why we're releasing two, we thought of a game mechanic to put in when we were developing Pokémon Black Version and Pokémon White Version, but we didn't have enough time to do it. We needed two games for that, so this time we decided to make two.

Iwata
So that's why you made two.

Masuda
Yes. A little later, we thought of making them sequels. When you told me that if we were going to release something for the Nintendo DS system, we had to come up with something new, I was really worried. (laughs) Then I thought, "How about sequels?"
Proof that Game Freak aren't above a paired release for a third version and that Iwata's death is probably the reason for the regression from sequels.

I am really hoping for sequels. But feels like it'll be third versions due to the Sun and Moon's time difference.

A remastered version is an alternate version. A sequel is a follow up from the original event. A third game is an upgraded version from the originals.

I am not sure what they are. I don't see GF going back to third versions because that makes no sense. Sequels usually take place after the events of first games.

How does returning to third versions "make no sense"? Just because they stopped doing them doesn't mean that they are gone forever.
