As many people know, some Pokémon have been put in odd egg groups, such as the Ralts evolutionary line and Shedinja. While Ralts' line's Indeterminate egg group makes some sense because of notable deformations on their human shape and the fact that some egg moves could hardly be learned if they were in the Humanshape egg group, Shedinja is a weird one.
But here's how I see it: Since Shedinja is an empty shell, he obviously can't be a Bug, because being the aforementioned shell, it lacks any kind of reproductive system. Thus, being in the Mineral egg group makes more sense, being (ugh I repeat this a lot) just a hollow shed shell.

Thoughts on this?

well, shedinja's shell is made of vitamins (protein, calcium, ect) and vitamins are minerals...

For Shedinja, it perfectly makes sense the Mineral egg group place.

About Ralts and all of its evolutions, they should have been in both the Indeterminate and the Humanshape egg groups. What bothers me more is the fact that Sableye looks much more like a ghost or another kind of immaterial/supernatural being and yet it belongs to the Humanshape group alone. Other Pokémon which should have had a different set of Egg groups are Froslass (Indeterminate and Mineral), Nidorina and Nidoqueen (Monster and Ground; how on earth they aren't able to breed but Nidoran♀ is?)

It seems that they tend to dump alot of genderless Pokémon into the mineral group. Shedinja appears to fall under this rule for being genderless.

But yeah, there are a few Pokémon that could have belonged to other egg groups.

Croagunk and Toxicroak could have belonged to the Water 1 egg group as well as the Humanshape one. It has a few qualities that could make it fit in (It's an amphibian, and it's possible for it to be immune to water attacks). It would have been neat if it could breed with Poliwrath or Politoed.

With the Ralts family, It would have made sense if it was in the Humanshape egg group in addition to the Indeterminate one, but I guess they wanted it to be distinct from the Abra family. Also, one of the Indeterminate egg group's main distinction is that they are enigmatic biologically speaking. Very few members are capable of breeding outside the egg group.

Torkoal could have been able to breed with the monster egg group, but right now, it cannot breed with either Blastoise or Torterra. Kecleon is in a similar situation.

Neither Clamperl or Shellder are capable of breeding with each other either.

a couple days ago, i was thinking how shedinja "functions" during the daycare breeding process. and you're right, i don't get how nidorina and nidoqueen can't breed, but nidoran♀ can't. if anything, it should be the other way around. it probably implies that nidorina and nidoqueen are too "mature". sort of like a grandma. nevermind.

Actually, the first thing I ever think about when I see Nidorina and Nidoqueen not having an egg group is pedophilia... But then I headdesk violently and spout "whatas da queshion?"

They do have an egg group, the No Eggs one. I know it sounds silly and rather paradoxical, but that's what the internal programming tells us.
