What do you think Shinji's past is? Why have the writers decided to keep it so ambiguous? His parents; were they abusive, or are they loving? Does he have any association with Galaxy-dan through family or friends?

What about Sumomo (Maylene) . . do you think Shinji knows her? Would he be the type that would want to impress her? The questions can go on and on.

I'll say what I want to say eventually, but I want to see what you guys think; speculate!

Well we know that he is from Veilstone City and that he has been a Trainer just as long as Ash has because he went though Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, and now Sinnoh.

What I would like to know is why is he so cold to everyone. It might tie back to his parents being mean or not being their for him. He might have never had a friend or not a real friend.

It's possible that his father is Cyrus, and ala Silver, believes that Pokemon are tools only for battle or his older brother is Lucian (Purple Hair!) and has an inferiority complex because he thinks that everyone favors "The 2nd Strongest Trainer in Sinnoh", over himself. That would also explain why Paul hasn't done the Sinnoh League yet, he wasn't strong enough to eventually face his brother.

I predict that Paul is Giovanni's son.

My prediction in no way is influenced by the Poke Special manga, or the 3rd gen games.

Maybe he was originally from Sinnoh, but the competition from Team Glactic forced him south to Kanto to set up his evil organization? You never know, it could happen!

Why would we even get his backstory? Gary, Harley, Richie, Harrison, Morrison, and Tyson really didn't have any sort of backstory. Paul doesn't need to have some angsty Single Tragic Event to explain why he's a jerk. He could just plain BE a jerk. We barely ever even get any backstory on the main characters prior to their initial introductions!

With the exceptions of Harley and Drew, we've never had a rival reoccur as often as Paul.

Harrison, Morrison, and Tyson all only appeared near the very end of the League, right before the competition IIRC. None of them has been in more than six episodes.

It's the same with Richie; with the exception of Chronicles, he only ever appeared in maybe three episodes during the Kanto League, and only three episodes thereafter in mid-Johto.

Gary has never been a reoccuring rival. We've probably seen Professor Ivy more often than him. There really wasn't much of a backstory to give to him either, since it was already pretty well established. He was a childhood friend of Ash's who started his journey at the same time, and his grandfather just happens to be Professor Oak.

With Harley, at least we got enough of a backstory to know why he hates May so much.

EDIT: Whoops, looks like Blackjack beat me to it with Harley

I thought Harley made the backstory up just as an excuse to hate May
That's what I heard
although I forgot where

Well, with Harley we found out why he hated May so much, because he used to know a girl who looked just like her.

I always thought it looked like a dirty, dirty lie Harley cooked up to convince the TRio of his "just cause". He's very capable of that and you know how the TRio are like when it comes to sob stories.

I think Harley, with his flair for the dramatic, could have come up with something better than "a girl who looked like her took my sausage when we were little". You know, something involving the *real* May.

Well, May dissed Cacturne and his cookies. Anyway.... I think Paul will get a backstory, but I don't think i can even guess at it.

Not everyone has a single reason to explain their personality (though for the sake of brevity, TV characters often do). Still, his lack of emotional attachment to anything makes him somewhat unique among characters in the show.

I would suspect he's gotten "burned" quite a few times before in his life and as a result doesn't trust much of anything.

Perhaps Paul doesn't emotionally attach himself to anyone because he's been really really really hurt before? o:

Like... Like uhm... Uh... I'm guessing something along the line of a Pokémon he cared deeply for, evolved and became disobedient a' la' Charizard and basically flipped the birdie on him and he swore NEVER AGAIN!

Then again, he's a schmuck towards humans too, except for Gym Leaders and higher ranked (or older?) soo... Yeah, I'm guessing his feelings were deeply hurt and he got all angsty and cold emotionally. Or he's just trying to act 'cool'. Ah, all these theories. Fun fun fuuuun.

While I have not seen much about Paul, what I hear is enough for me.

From Veilstone City? In the games at least, I always felt Veilstone City is like a vice city; furthermore, the Team Galactic Headquarters are located there. For those that suspect he has a connection to Team Galactic, that's your water there.

While I can't say much, however, I still feel that his personality has something to do with his hometown...
