My girlfriend, while playing Platinum, encountered an NPC who gave her a shiny Lugia. She does not remember where this person was -- only that she had already beaten the Elite Four. According to the pokemon's data, the OT is someone named Landon. Other things were that it had a mild nature and was somewhat vain. She did not use any cheats. No AR or anything; she doesn't even have one. She has no idea what she did or did not do that caused her to accidentally discover this. I've looked it up on Google and on... well, here, at Bulbapedia, but I haven't found anything mentioning any such a phenomenon, except a shiny Lugia cheat on Emerald. Has anyone else heard of or stumbled across anything like this? Is it a glitch or an easter egg or what?

Get her to take a picture of the NPC or the shiny Lugia status screen (preferably both). I highly doubt that this is possible as NPCs just don't give you legendary Pokémon, especially shiny.

Either
1) you're just faking this
2) your girlfriend has a hacked or bootleg game (where did she buy or get it?)
3) your girlfriend is lying, has cheated
4) your girlfriend is lying about NPC, got the Lugia off GTS

There are no NPCs giving out legendaries in any Pokémon game. Period.

No logical reason not to just call bullshit on this and call it a day. I don't care who is lying, this did not happen.

look at the facts.

Lugia is a legendary. These are never given out.
Shinies are very rare. Most people don't even know what they are. A shiny lugia would be like the holy grail just given to King Arthur.

But, I suppose I have to say what is already said. This is a load of crap.

people here are too eager for things to be sent to the HoS. :|

fatgoat, your girlfriend couldn't have gotten it from an NPC - none of them give shiny lugias out, unless you're talking about the guy in the pokemart that shows up when you go to a pokemon event (and i don't think there has been a ho-oh/lugia event for gen IV yet anyway). she probably got the lugia off the GTS.

It's not kind to run in here and start calling people dirty liars.
But saying that, this does seem fake, so i'll stick to that side.

Guys, seriously, we could be a little more nicer when it comes to things like these.

Landon... Why does that sound familar?...
*Looks up Landon*
Oh, it was one of the default names for the male character in R/S/E.

Yeah I think your girlfriend probably got it off the GTS from a hacker.

I have no idea how it happened either. Honestly, I didn't believe her until I saw the Lugia's stat screen, the purplish tint and the shiny flash. She could not have gotten the Lugia off the GTS because the wireless at her house doesn't work with her DS (I've tried to get it to work myself, but the security settings are evidently not compatible). I know she did not cheat. I've known her for a long time, certainly long enough to know she is not a person to cheat. She got the game after the US release, most likely from Gamestop, I'd guess. My only guess is that it is some sort of glitch. I seriously wish there was some sort of way I could offer definitive proof or try to get my girlfriend to remember where the person was and to find him again (if he's still there, hopefully), but the best I can do right now is offer my account of what happened. Of course, I realize that, given I am a new member with no reputation or history on this forum and given the fact I offered no evidence or proof of my claim, it is hard to do anything but dismiss this as a hoax, but I promise you that it is true, even though my word probably means next to nothing here. But still, I'll do my best to try and find proof. I can't take a picture of the Lugia's stats and such, but I can make a short video of the stats screens, as I only have a video camera at my disposal. That's the most I can do right now.

That would be most helpful. Even a video of the Lugia, its OT and where it was obtained will be very useful.

No, there's just no way. You're saying that your girlfriend got it while you weren't there from an NPC, and she conveniently forgot everything about said NPC, including where he was, what he looked like and what he said when he gave it to her. If life was a shitty George Lucas movie remake, then maybe I'd believe you or her, but that's just too convenient for me.

Still, a video of the Lugia's status screens won't be any proof at all.

Yeah. Look, I'm not accusing anyone from cheating without a good reason. The two options I gave (cheating or hacked game) are those just because of
* legendaries aren't given out by NPCs
* shinies aren't given out by NPCs
* it cannot be a glitch because of the nature of a glitch: a glitch is just something small going wrong (though it may lead to larger glitches, as seen by Old Man glitch), and a full NPC encounter with a free gift Pokémon (and with spoken dialogue?) cannot be just randomly created by a glitch

I stress that this is very probable if the game isn't authentic. Most newbie hackers tend to add multiple legendary Pokémon to be easily available - I don't know if there are many DPPt hacking tools out yet, though. This is my best bet if indeed neither of you two is lying.

Look, I know it's hard to believe. If I were in someone else's position, I'd be skeptical, too. The most unfortunate fact is that the details were gradually revealed to me over a period of time. And yet, I also kind of screwed myself over because I was so slow to act. The first time she told me (which was a few months ago) that she got a Lugia, I was under the impression that she found it in the wild, as she didn't mention where she got it. I wasn't sure that a person could catch Lugia in Platinum, so I looked it up in the guide and found that it indeed does not make an appearance in Platinum. I was amazed; I thought it was absolutely and totally awesome. Shortly after, I learned that I had apparently misunderstood, as she had received it from a person. I didn't ask her much about it, which, of course, I now regret. By the time, though, the memory of the incident was fuzzy. So, I kind of screwed myself over because I just asked a couple questions (to no real avail), and then I just lazily gave up and decided to just search later. And so, the whole thing fell out of mind until just recently. It wasn't until just recently that I learned that it was shiny. This was what prompted me to post this topic here.

And now, after having asked her again about it, she says that she seriously can't remember, as if one day she just turned on the game and the Lugia was there. I plan to make the video of the Lugia's stats today, and hopefully that will serve at least as a tiny bit of verification. It's a camera that uses actual miniature video cassettes, and the footage can be uploaded onto the computer. I don't know how I can prove that the tape is undoctored, and still, it's not proof that her game was not hacked. The best I can do is my word, and I swear on my life that this is the honest truth.

I guess that is most likely. Is it still possible the game was hacked even if it was bought in a store and came in its original packaging, with the handbook and case and everything? So far, this is the only legendary pokemon she has come across that is uncatchable in the game, and none of the other legendaries were easier to catch, nor were they shiny.
