Is there any 'special' way to get a shiny, without using gameshark or AR?
I've gotten a shiny crobat before, but that was in Sapphire.
is it by chance, or is there some special way to do it?

1/8000 or so odds.
Soft resetting for legends or stationaries.
Masuda breeding method. (Breed one of yours with one from another country ex. Japanese ditto with Lickitung.)=1/2000 odds.
And the ever popular RNG method.

Every Pokemon has a 1/8192 chance of being shing shiny except for Pokemon bred via Masuda Method they are 4 times more likely to spawn a shiny.

I also had a shiny Crobat in RSE

Catch the Red Gyarados in the Lake of Rage!!!!

Okey, that was lame.
I think Masuda Method, RNG Method or Soft resetting are the best ones you could try..

Hey, I'm the third person in the thread who had a Shiny Crobat in R/S/E (it was originally a Golbat).

Easiest method for someone who wants a simple method is the Matsuda Method, in my opinion, which roughly gives you a 1 in 2000 chance of hatching a Shiny Pokémon.
It's very easy to do if you have a Japanese or Chinese Ditto, at least, for me, as nearly all the Pokémon I have are from European countries or America.

You can read more about it here on the Bulbapedia Page.
