In the case of ships with more than two people (i.e. AsharemShipper - Ash, Dawn, Misty, Zoey & Jessie), is that supposed to be a love triangle/square? Or an actual... Well, orgy? Sorry to be a noob, but I'm new to the shipping game. Thanks in advance for the help!

That would be the common practice, and then there's the practice that two-or-more people like one, and don't mind sharing, perhaps even having some semblance of good-naturedness toward each other that could, in the future, bring the 'ship into a closed, polyamorous relationship.

...Basically, as long as there's safe feelings all round (eventually? fic plot!), it'll be a poly-ship.

A triangle wouldn't result in anything but jealousy or pain; a poly-ship would be character!kind, in theory.
