I think Calem should be in the anime and since there is Amourshipping i think there should be a competition between Ash and Calem and who wins over Serena. It's going to be really exciting if Ash and Calem fight over Serena. My Idea is Calem and Ash become best friends and are friends but when it comes to Serena they are rivals it's just an idea i hope you like it.

Ash is not interested in romance and is completely oblivious to it. I can accept people enjoying shipping, but when people seriously suggest such ideas I have to wonder if we're even watching the same show...

Should he?
Yes

Will he?
Oh hell no

The best we can hope for is a cameo is a World of Pokémon segment in the Movies. A promotional short is we're REALLY lucky.

Took the words right out of my head. Any appearance of the male PC in the main anime (not counting 5-second cameos in movie intros and the like) is wishful thinking.

Calem will suffer the fate of all male NPCs-being a minor cameo in the movie, or have his apperance assimilated by Ash

Calem doesn't have a reason to be in the anime. Well, the only reason that I can think of is that it would appease some of the fans, but other than that there's no character that can't fill his role. He could be Ash's rival, perhaps, but they don't have to make it Calem. It could be anyone and the job would get done the same as it would with someone else.

I'd personally prefer to see an original character as I think the anime team can do better in terms of design, but that's just me.

If anything, I want to see Serena slowly get over her crush and turn her focus from Ash to her Pokémon. This show never was and probably never will be about romance. And anyone who's having a romantic interest in Ash is doomed anyway so for her own good Serena has to move on from him cause it's not happening.

I'm assuming the OP means the rival Calem (not player Calem).

In either case, I would have to say no. Calem doesn't really have a role to fulfill in this anime, whether it be Ash's battle rival or his "love" rival. For the former, Ash may not have a main rival this time around. However, Tierno, and possibly Sanpei, still function as his quasi-rivals to date. Those two characters together could fulfill whatever role Calem has to offer. As for the latter scenario, it won't work since Serena will ultimately still cling to Ash. Meanwhile, Ash is too focused on his dream to care about romance or love, as many scenarios in the past series have shown. Calem is absolutely not needed to function as either type of rival.

While it almost certainly won't happen, I'd say that whether Calem *should* be in the anime or not would depend on how he is handled. If he becomes Ash's rival, I suppose that would be okay, but I feel that it might already be too late for that role to have much of an impact that Tierno couldn't already provide. Otherwise, I don't see what he could really offer to the series, besides the obvious nod to X/Y gameplayers - which isn't really much of anything.

Perhaps he'll just make a cameo in the next "World of Pokemon" intro in the next movie.

He's technically in the anime, Ash is wearing his attire!(with short sleeves and shoes instead) :p

It would truly be interesting to see more of Calem's interactions Ash and the others. But I doubt it will happen though. A minor appearance would probably be the most likely to happen.

I'd be up for a few appearances from him. There's no 'should' for him to be in it and he'll just end up with a cameo or two at best like Brenden and Lucas.

Calem never really interested me personally so i dont have particular desire to see him in show. Rather plain and ordinary design imo doesnt helps either and i dont see need for playable male protagonist to be involved within anime.

Especially when Ash fulfills this role instead of him more than good enough. Actually better. Thanks to iconic status, huge recognizability and emotional investment many fans around the world put into character becoming main face of pokemon series.

Ash already does everything Calem would be expected to perform from marketing standpoint during course of Kalos series and with Alain story being followed in paralell through mega evolution specials hinting his ppssible encounter with Ash. I dont find it viable to incorporate one of two main faces of XY games into current series.

In some large groundbreaking role changing course of Ash and his companions development and current plots circulating around.
And giving him some random forgettable short appearance wouldnt really do justice to character of his calliber either.

Main reason why so far every male protagonit from new games never appeared in anime in reality is due to Ash obtaining their roles, and good chunk of female protagonists ended up ignored as well. Due to different formats, plans and direction in which pokemon anime development team wanted to take this show through.

Not to mention whole idea of Calem being involved within Serena crush subplot is extra factor which turns me away of wanting to see him in this show. Since pokemon anime simply follows different standards with any possibility of romance being treated as consistent, stable story which builds on itself and force characters to go through high stream of emotions developing inner strength and motivation to go forward. Being sentenced to failure(coughpokeshipping, contestshippingcough).

Due to:
- main females always being dumped like garbage with unfinished stories in favor of new ones.
-main theme of this show being about adventires, friendship and strong bonds built between themselves, mysteries, pokemon and battles.

Personally im indifferent to whole idea of Calem being in pokemon series or not. If anything im much more interested in ex main characters getting follow up. Characters i actually like and care about, see how much their dreams have advanced and lives changed strengthening continuity(which is very weak to begin with).

Will it happen? no, probably not, maybe a minor appearence. If the animes creators have been consistent with anything, than it is not putting the male protagonist from the game in the the anime (well besides kinda designing Ash off of Red)

Would I like to see it happen? Sure why not. He won't have to be anyone major or anything. Maybe he could have a cool little backstory, like living next door to Serena when she was younger. Maybe he tried to face the league and Diantha but lost? maybe he decided to become one of Professor's Sycamore's researchers after he went through his own journey? (you know, i think this sounds a little like Gary after the johto league). Ash and Co could meet him during their journey. Just speculation

that's someone who needs to make a cameo.... Gary

Technically, Ash takes the place of every male character. He's based on Red (Kanto), and is the focus in Johto (Ethan), Hoenn (Brendan), Sinnoh (Lucas), Unova (Hilbert and Nate) and as you mentioned, in Kalos, he's even wearing similar clothing to Calem. He is every male PC in one, and unfortunately, as much as I'd love for him to travel with both PC's in a region instead of random Gym Leaders *cough*Cilan*cough*, I don't really think it's happening.

Aside from May, Dawn and Serena, all of the player characters have gotten the short end of the stick in the anime. Again, not counting Red, whom Ash is based off of.
