I've been playing Pokemon X and about 70% done the game and I want to play either OR or AS next as Sapphire was the last Pokémon game I finished before X.

Which version of the remake should I get? I know OR gives you a Groudon and AS a Kyogre but are there other differences?

There are some other differences, for example OR has Nuzleaf and AS has Lotad. I think the bulbapedia page lists all the differences.

Yeah, aside from the mascot legendaries and villainous team, the primary differences are variations in what kinds of wild Pokemon you encounter (e.g. Plusle vs. Minun). Here's the list for OR/AS:

Version-exclusive Pokémon - Bulbapedia, the community-driven Pokémon encyclopedia

This was a hard decision for me because I never played Ruby or Sapphire in Gen 3 (I played Emerald). In the end I picked up both versions and am alternating between them as I go.

Really depends on your preference regarding version exclusives. I got AS myself cause my first game was Sapphire, but I think both would be equally fun (actually thinking about getting OR as well, cause it's practically on sale every other week here)

And aside of the version exclusive pokémon, there's this to consider: which team would you rather fight?
I mean, they're equal in difficulty levels, but you might have a preference for one over the other

Since you can get about any non legendary by trading on this site it boils down to which team you'd rather fight and which legends you'd rather get. Though Groudon is much harder to catch than Kyogre so you may want to keep that in mind. I got Sapphire since I liked the legendaries better in that version and I have resources in by old Black version to fill the holes.

Though Groudon is much harder to catch than Kyogre...
Wait, what? Oh, right, it's probably because of their respective movesets (I used Shedinja to capture the entire weather trio in Emerald, and Groudon was certainly the most difficult because of AncientPower; at least Rayquaza's Fly gave the wonder ghost a one turn warning) ...

Depends if you want to stop Team Magma's or Aqua's plans for working, and as mentioned, version exclusive Pokemon. If you're going to fill your dex, you could consider it how many missing (legendary) Pokemon you'd obtain from the game you're gonna purchase. And how many you'd be able to transfer from the earlier games. Other version exclusives are quite easy to obtain nowadays, GTS works for that purpose if you are patient with depositing your Pokemon up for trade - and of course, the lovely wonder trade is awesome; you never know if you're gonna get a Zigzagoon or something rare and shiny. ;D

If you want to take a Shedinja in your team, then sure - since Kyogre can't touch it, but respectfully I disagree, or let's say, I have an alternative; Groudon can only tickle Latios/Latias or a Flygon, and if you're low on health, Roost/Recover it back + they learn Dragonbreath which has a good chance to paralyze them. If it takes time, then consider Timer Balls.

Did you play one of the GBA games? Since I had Sapphire, I went with Alpha Sapphire. (My starter is still Torchic.)

Doesn't matter which as both versions are disappointing. I only got these to finish national dex and get Deoxys.

It really depends on you, I got omega Ruby since I had Ruby and emerald. I never played sapphire so I can't really say which version to go with.
