Should Nintendo/Gamefreak Change The Censor Limits In OR/AS

Okay so one of my biggest complaints about X and Y was the RIDICULOUS censors with nicknames. If there was a word that is remotely bad in anyway, in any language in the name, it would get censored. Some examples of this would be Thumper(hump), Bismuth(smut), Conner(conne), and Spike(spik). Some of these censors are over the top if you ask me and I'm hoping they may change the censors in Pokemon Alpha Ruby and Omega Sapphire. In the past, the censors in the games weren't so strict. I mean look at Gen III, the generation we're remaking. In Game Grumps playthrough of Fire Red(a Gen III game), they have a Vileplume named FUCK KING and a Dugtrio named BUTTNUTZ. While we didn't have online back then, you could still play the games and use those names. So the question I'm asking is do you agree that they need to loosen their hold on nickname censoring or keep it the same.

The reason GF is doing this is to keep all languages from being offended. I doubt that they'll change the sensors for nicknames anytime soon, but one thing I DO see them fixing (at least I hope they do) is that if the Pokémon is not nicknamed, it won't be banned from trading due to a bad coincidence of the Pokémon's default species name for the language it was obtained in. That way, people won't have a problem trading a Cofagrigus that uses its default English name.

Why do they have to censor that much in the first place anyway? Can't they just limit the censor to when the word is clearly spelt out on its own? With the example above just disallow (space)Hump(space) (which can also mean the camel's hump anyway), but allow Thumper. (Alternatively, allow in-game traded Pokémon, no questions asked.)

I think maybe when there is an offending word, the game checks the letters around it to see if it makes a justified word. For example, "hump" may be censored, but if you put a T in front to make "thump", it. All Pokémon with problematic default names like Cofagrigus should be on the justified list.

I think this is what they really should do. If an "offensive" word is spelled out on its own, then it would make sense to censor it. If there's an "offensive" word within another word, like Thumper, then the censors should not prevent you from using the name. They need to make a list of whitelisted words that contain blacklisted words.

Yeah, they really need to look to make sure you're trying to make a name. It's really moronic that they have a gym leader, introduced IN THIS GNERATION, named Viola, and yet, due to the censor, you cannot make one of your Pokemon Viola.

I also discovered a couple weeks ago that "Hax" is banned. I wanna gonna name an Axew "Hax" after Haxorus, but it was blocking it. Personally, I think that in-game, there should be no nickname restrictions whatsoever. Isn't it obvious? All they have to do is if a Pokemon has an "inappropriate" nickname when doing online play, censor it by replacing it with the species' name when traded (or temporarily censored if a battle). That way, people could nickname their Pokemon in their games however they want to, as it is their right, and a simple censoring system in wireless communications could be implemented. It's a win-win.

Why have they not already done this? Seriously. I can't get over it. It's so obvious.

Game Freak already changes offensive nicknames when coming through Bank, your nicknames aren't shown in random battles. If the nicknames are that offensive, then change it back to normal if a person offers the Pokemon up on GTS and Wonder Trade.

All this censorship devoid of actually acknowledging real words that have those swears in them are just teaching us words that have swears in them.

exactly. creating a ban list reinforces that these words are negative, awful things instead of what they actually are. I think your suggestion that nicknames be changed when pokemon are traded would actually work on a universal level.

They really need to do something about this censoring. First of all, it isn't even consistent. I can't name my Pokemon "Kakashi" for some reason; I don't know what swear is in it. But naming my Magmar "Assface" is completely fine? Not that I want them to censor "assface" (because my Magmar totally deserved that name), I'm just saying, it's inconsistent.

Second of all, it is clearly too strict when regular names like "Conner" and common pet names like "Spike" aren't allowed, in addition to actual Pokemon like Cofagrigus and Froslass. And...I mean, "hump"? Come on, really? The first thing they need to do with ORAS is only make the obvious single swear/inappropriate word censored, not any word that contains said swear/inappropriate word, as that's just ridiculous and limiting. As a player, you should have the right to name your Pokemon whatever you want to name it. So I think Pokemon should have a naming censor only if you try to trade it. Just like you can't trade a "Special/Event" Pokemon, they could have a message say: "This Pokemon's nickname is not allowed. You cannot trade it." or "You cannot trade this Pokemon with it's current nickname" or something like that. Or, like suggested before, default it to the Pokemon Species.

But honestly, they really just need to cut down on the strictness of what you can name Pokemon.

I never even knew some of these words were swear words. Censorship is kind of stupid, since it's too drastic with everything (such as banning default names) and losers find a loophole through it anyways. I've seen more offensive slander spelt out in Internet slang than I care to remember.

Exactly. I've learned so many more swear words because of XY's swear filter than I would have for the rest of my life. It not only teaches you swears in your language, but swears in all the languages available in the games.

They probably should change it. But I don't expect them to, especially not mid-generation (and not now that Wonder Trade has made anonymously trolling random users easier than ever). At best they might adjust it so that it no longer blocks actual Pokémon names.

So is it physically impossible to trade Cofagrigus with another player, or is it only Wifi where it is blocked? If I nickname it Andy would that be ok to get it through the filter?

This definitely needs to be fixed. There's a move called spikes but if it is the Pokemon's name then it's a bad word? What?

Right, they should allow a whitelist of things: default Pokemon names, any in-game trades, any names already attributed to characters (and that's both in the anime and in the games), and any names based on moves/abilities.
