Should Sap Sipper have been an ability of Turtwig/Grottle/Torterra?

In a previous topic (closed for being an answered question) i wrote this:

While watching some old episodes i came across one of the episodes where Ash's Grottle "ate" an energy ball to become charged.

This does sound a lot like the 5th generation new ability "Sap Sipper".
Do you think Ash's grottle had the sap sipper ability or should this tactic be placed in the same category as the "Thunder armor" from Pikachu and Swellow.

On a sidenote: i'd love to see Sap sipper as a dreamworld ability for Grottle/Torterra.

Now with this in mind, do you think that Sap Sipper should have been a DW ability of Turtwig, Grottle and torterra?

IMO the D/P trick came close enough to the Sap Sipper ability to warrant Turtwig receiving SS as ability in B/W.

Edit: if this is not the correct section for such a discussion, can the topic be relocated to the correct section?

I've moved this to World as while you have used evidence from the Anime, this mainly effects the games.
As you've used two different Pokémon media, World seems like a more suitable place.

As for the topic, I'm going to say no.

Hayashigame had to eat its own Energy Ball to gain said power boost. It wasn't from the result of an opponent's Grass-type attack.

Likewise, we saw Manmoo eat its own Ice Shard in an imitation of Hayashigame eating its Energy Ball; no such Icy type version of Sap Sipper/Motor Drive/Storm Drain exists.

We also know that the Anime has a limited effect on the games. Taking the Porygon incident into account, we know that the Porygon family will never ever be shown in the anime yet they made Porygon-Z anyway despite this. There is the argument that Miru was shown with a Casey instead of a Yungerer for her anime appearance, though this is a case of a lawsuit against a TCG card effecting the anime rather than the anime effecting the games.

There's also the long list of crap in the anime that makes no sense in the games what so ever. Thunder Armour being one of them. They didn't make Thunder Armour an ability for Swellow, so I see no reason why they should make Sap Sipper a Dream World ability for Hayashigame.

No one pokemon should get Sap Sipper, as "Sap Sipper" is just a plain dumb name.

On that note, Torterra could have gotten Sap Sipper with me being relatively pleased back then--I don't like its DW ability Shell Armor. As well, I'd maybe give Swampert Storm Drain. I don't like its DW ability Damp, and both it and Torterra don't resist their original types. (As well, Typhlosion, a Fire-type starter, with its DW ability is also immune to its original/principle/only type. This would make for a Grass/Fire/Water trio immune to their original types, sans Mold Breaker or similar ability.)

Nah. I believe Torterra needs a better ability from Sap Sipper. While the "Turtwig swallowing Energy Ball" example is legit, Shell Armour makes more sense than Sap Sipper, but that's not to say Shell Armour is the best one. Besides, in that example, Turtwig swallows its own Energy Ball, so it doesn't really constitute to the true nature of the ability, but I didn't watch DP's portion of the anime, so I can't ascertain Turtwig swallowing other Energy Balls.

In my opinion, Torterra needs one of the following: Thick Fat, Solid Rock or Chlorophyll.

- Thick Fat: Torterra's already pretty good defensively, and with this ability, it will be able to give those pesky Fire-types trouble thanks to the lowered damage and the fact that a lot of them hates Ground attacks, putting most of them in place. the lowered Ice damage is certainly a plus, because now not every Ice attack puts Torterra in place.
- Solid Rock: It's not as fancy as Thick Fat, but the lowered weaknesses will prove to be a blessing thanks to Torterra's good defences, because the ability to take less from any weak points makes Torterra good if Rock Polish is being used. Still, Ice attacks can be a problem, so Thick Fat's better in that regard, although Solid Rock helps with the mitigation of other weaknesses as well.
- Chlorophyll: Now this is a big one. Torterra is blessed with a good enough offensive movepool, so what better way than to give him this ability? Thanks to his ability to learn Growth (through propagation), Torterra can make for a pretty good sweeper, because its lower Speed is made up for its good defences. That's not mention his unique ability to use Reflect and Light Screen. The Pokemon will have some competition with Tangrowth in this case, but each has their own advantages that even if Torterra has this ability, Tangrowth still has a purpose of being used. What does Tangrowth have that Torterra don't, you may ask? Tangrowth's Defence is higher, can use Stun Spore & Sleep Powder (Rage Powder too, to a lesser extent), higher Special Attack and has Focus Blast. I think there are others, but these are some of them.

Thanks for reading.

lol @winstein'While the "Turtwig swallowing Energy Ball" example is legit, Shell Armour makes more sense than Sap Sipper, ...' Meh, I found that funny. (Generally, winnie comes off as being... scholarly, in a pokemon-y kind of way. This was rather colloquially spoken.)

Anyway, I was looking for abilities to match Torterra and it hits me: Solid Rock! I then look at Winstein's post and find it was there the whole time.

But that's the only ability that I would give to Torterra otherwise, really. Now if Sap Sipper were simply called Herbivore...

Chlorophyll would only make Torterra an inferior Venusaur because Torty prefers sandy weather to sunny one. I think Sand Rush would have been more fitting and even then, its iffy.

I do like the Solid Rock and Thick Fat ideas though. Those are totally legit.
