Should they make more movie-length specials?

I was just thinking back as to how we got both the "Mewtwo Returns" special and "Legend of Thunder" special back during Johto.

Both specials were roughly the same length of a Pokemon movie, (or maybe a little shorter), and had animation similar to the movies at the time.

Why did this stop? The closest thing we've had to that since then is the Mastermind special, but that was only about 45 minutes. Should they make more movie-length direct-to-DVD TV specials? Its something they only really did during Johto and never did again.

They should had done it during the release of FLRG and Emerald. The writers themselves gave us a potential plot. Team Rocket captures freaking Rayquaza.

I never understood why they never made any special of that type. I mean..it just seems stupid. They've made a couple of Dungeon Specials and hosos featuring damn Ritchie...why not something that could help promote the then new games like with the Raikou Special?

I'd love to see more specials, personally. I especially like the idea of "Legend of Thunder"-type shows which are disconnected to the main plot of the anime - actually gives them almost unlimited plot ideas when you think about it.

But it's the fact that the writers don't take advantage of this that makes me think they're stupid at times. Seriously, a special staring Brendan and/or Leaf getting involved with the TR capture of Rayquaza would had been beyond awesome.

I'm still bitter that Kenta and Marina only get one lousy hour-long special whereas they're both more interesting than the current lead male and female.

I LOVED Mastermind of Mirage Pokemon since it converted me to an imageshipper.

Characters like Yuuki, Kouki, Soul, Silver, and Leaf deserve more appearances other than cameos, and I think everyone agrees that the Raikou special was a highlight of Johto.

Yes, yes, absolutely yes. The thirty-minute specials were... okay, and it was certainly nice to see what the more obscure characters were up to, something we can appreciate more now in DP that we haven't seen so many characters in such a long time. But the TV movies were simply epic and were Pokémon at its best. This is a quirk of Johto that has got to come back. And it would be good timing too.

It would rock to see some off-the-wall features. Maybe...
-Things that tie into the movies, like another Mewtwo feature or a prequel to Movie 8 with Sir Aaron and Lucario.
-Specials featuring the game PCs who have been shafted. Like, oh say... Brendan and Lucas. Pretty please. Bonus points for ho yay.
-What about giving May and her group their own TV movie?
-A lost cause by this point, but a movie adaptation of MD2 would have been great. But we still have plenty of games to adapt in Colosseum, XD, and both Ranger games. We can even have something based in Pokétopia, for Arceus's sake.
-Background information, Birth of Mewtwo-style, please. Delia's tragic backstory animated? The pasts of Giovanni and/or Cyrus? How about learning anything about Tracey's life before meeting Ash and Misty?

I realize none of that's likely at all, but it'd be fun.

Um, what? I liked Jimmy and Marina and all, but I sure as hell wouldn't call them more interesting than the characters that have been developed over the course of years.

I sure would. They could use it as a bonus arena, like "here are some stories about pokémon". They could get to, like, individual pokémon (be they species or specific individuals--like the Slowking short only not on hallucinogens), or characters (what happened to AJ's "gym"? Why did Glacia never show up?), or even go off different sources (Gamecube games, maybe something about Hayley and her ranch, Pikachu and Clefairy's adventures from Magical Pokemon Journey, most of PokeWake only without the cards).

It would be awesome and badass. Heck, we already know they'd succeed at first anyway, if they kept it around the MD specials.

I don't like the word "special"... at least for me, Mewtwo and Raikou are real movies... direct-to-TV (or video) but still movies (well, Raikou was broken to three eps for the dub, but I read the DVD has them together as a movie)

Sure I'd like more of that! Mirage wasn't nearly as good, probably since the US had a lot of influence about it (I doubt the Japanese would ever make Mirage from their own will... the stupid out of character relationship of Misty/May "I owe you...", someone randomly knowing about Mewtwo... Misty randomly appear and Tracey is forgotten...)

It's really too bad they don't make more of these... but the MD eps are good too
If only we could get new (and better) side story eps... and a short series showcasing the important events (Contests, evolutions, etc) of May's journey in Johto... that would be even better than a random movie for me

Satoshi, Hikari, and Takeshi aren't the only characters involved in the PKM world. The writers should have understood this. So many speculations regarding Haruka's journey in Jouto, Kenta and Marina's progress since "Raikou: Legend of Thunder", and the other stars from previous games that got cameo appearances, outside of Leaf and Soul (for now anyway) are wondered many times. Plus the rest of the Shinou appeared monsters, Porygon 2 and Barboach, have no proper appearances yet. Exactly what are they scheming?

I also wondered how those 2 specials, "Mewtwo Returns" and "Raikou: Legend of Thunder" did in terms of success from viewers? I wouldn't understand it if the ratings were low since their debut.

Sinnoh isn't over yet... they'll most likely give a proper appearance for all the new Pokémon by Sinnoh's end... at worst, dew might be saved for the BF saga or something but I doubt it

I don't get how Poké getting proper appearances related to this thread but I do agree Barboach should get a proper appearance sometime... it was only seen in the backgroud since its ep never aired, not even in Japan
About the gen 4 Poké - the only one I worry about is Kricketot... the early bugs of the three previous gens all appeared very early in the series... but Kricketot was totally forgotten and only got some background appearances... I hope it'll get a proper appearance one day

Because nothing can beat Super Sentai and Kamen Rider. Especially Kamen Rider Decade.

Anyway, Pokemon Universe is big and the ideas are all around. Like Pokemon Special anime adaptation (interestingly enough, the mini-marathon of DPBD eps on czech Jetix @ 15th is called "Pokemon Special" in schedule ;-)), PTCG fame adaptation, there are other mangas too... and side characters with their stories, Housou-like. Just not on the Sunday timeslot, which will ALWAYS lose to Super Herrrrrrrro Time!

What? Did I miss something? Not that it matters anyway, because once Jetix will become Disney Channel, Pokémon will once again dissapear from Czech TV screens. Not that it's that bad, especially with the dub they gave it. Fortunately, UPC offers me switch to English.

Anyway, back to topic. I personally find interesting enough anything that offers us to see something not covered by anime. And if it has non-anime characters I am even more happy :yahoo:

Wait, was it ever confirmed Pokémon won't continue after Jetix change its name? I think Jetix kept a lot of its shows from its Fox Kids days... so I'm sure there's at least a little chance of them keeping a few non-Disney shows after the name change... it can be mostly Disney and not ONLY Disney

They were direct-to-TV movies... I don't think they ever gave an official term to these, I prefer "TV Movie" over "special"

I can't bother to check but you can probably find the date on Dogasu's site or Bulbapedia... if it's a Thursday, than most likely it was in the regular ep time slot... not like it really matters...

I didn't know Jetix in Israel is going to change into Disney Channel too. I thought this stupid decision from Disney is our Central European speciality. But what I can say for sure now is Disney Channel in Czech will be mixture of Disney Channel, Disney Playhouse and Fox Kids/Jetix/Disney XD shows. That was confirmed by Channels, company in charge of distribution Jetix (as well as other channels like National Geographic). The problem with Pokémon though is, it doesn't belong to any of this category. Pokémon is third party show and I am not sure Disney will be willing to pay for it, since they have many in-house shows to fill their programming. Not to mention as someone somewhere (and I think it was someone here on BMGF) said, Pikachu and Mickey Mouse is not go toghether very well. Of course we still can hope I am wrong. It would help if Pokémon had good ratings on Jetix, but Pokémon, unfortunately, wasn't that good in both Czech Republic and Hungary (our Jetix airs for both coutries as well as Slovakia too). Gee, they even replaced Pokémon with Naruto and Shaman King in evening Jetix Max block and by Wizards of Wawerly Place in afternoon block and now only airs it in 6AM and two times through night. I can easily see they are going to get rid of Pokémon as soon as they will get a chance :scared: Of course things can be different in Israel.
