WOAH... Easy on the wild Pidgy...

Is it just me or does it seem like every step you take in a cave, on water, or in tall grass leads to a random encounter?

Re: WOAH... Easy on the wild Pidgy...

In these games use of the running shoes and bike increase the encounter rate, apparently. Using the Black Flute or a Cleanse Tag would help reduce it a bit.

Re: WOAH... Easy on the wild Pidgy...

I only have a big problem in caves and water
not that I mind overly much

also IIRC you can use the pokemon lullaby on the radio to reduce the encounter rate too

Re: WOAH... Easy on the wild Pidgy...

It really hasn't been a problem for me. The only time I do see alot of random encounters is when using the running shoes or bike. Other than that I think its about the same as any other Pokemon game?

Re: WOAH... Easy on the wild Pidgy...

I don't really run into much in general actually. :/ Even with running shoes constantly on... Sometimes I get an encounter every 2-5 steps, but that's actually kind of rare for me, in both of my games.

Re: WOAH... Easy on the wild Pidgy...

I did notice when playing SoulSilver that the encounter rate was increased.

Re: WOAH... Easy on the wild Pidgy...

It is a waste of my time.

If Repel lasted until region change, it would be good, but until you get wealthy it's a sad way to go poor.
Running shoes should reduce the encounter rate, because you are running. That's what you do when you don't want to fight. You click RUN. So if the level of the ekans in the grass is low enough to run from, I'm running, game, figure it out. I'm moving fast because I don't want to waste time crossing the map. That includes spending ten seconds on a battle begin animation. And on bike, you ought to get exp for running suckers over. Trainer used Cycle Wheel. *crunch* It's super-effective! EKANS is paralyzed. EKANS fainted. Trainer got 57 EXP!

Re: WOAH... Easy on the wild Pidgy...

There the most common Pokemon in Johto.

Re: WOAH... Easy on the wild Pidgy...

Personally, I don't mind about high encounter rates, and battling wild pokémon. It's called experience. Use it.

Re: WOAH... Easy on the wild Pidgy...

Its like the Sinnoh and Bidoof of Starly.

Re: WOAH... Easy on the wild Pidgy...

Really? I have kinda the opposite. I do mainly walk though, my Togetic gets angry if I run.

Massive LOL.

The logic is, running and biking makes more noise. If you are quietly walking through the grass, it's less likely anyone/thing will hear you. If you're running, you're making more noise which attracts attention. P:

So you're saying that if you run you attract pidgeons to wildly peck at you for no reason. They'd probably want you to run and attack if you don't because they want you to Get the Fuck out.

Re: WOAH... Easy on the wild Pidgy...

I remember a higher encounter rate when going through water in my japanese soul silver so I feel it's more than just running since you can't ride a bike or run in water.

I didn't really notice the higher encounter rate until I played RS straight after playing soul silver. The water in RS actually felt okay due to the lower encounter rate compared to SS.

I'm not sure if this is the case with the english version of SS however. I would certainly hope they dropped the encounter rate in the water. I hated going through the water in my japanese SS.

Could be just my copy though.

Re: WOAH... Easy on the wild Pidgy...

I know that... when I get the game tomorrow, I probably won't mind the high encounter rate. I mean, it's good to over-level your Pokémon in my opinion. :3 Of course, that opinion could quickly change...

Re: WOAH... Easy on the wild Pidgy...

You are a level 2 bird poking around in a patch of weeds. A human weighing 22 times your weight is trudging through the grass. He is followed by something even taller than the human, that weighs 44 times your weight, and emits a column of fire from its shoulders whenever it becomes annoyed.

...

One of them made a sound. What do you do?

A) Keep your head down.
B) Peck at bugs in another bush.
C) Become an unrecognizable lump of charcoal.

And the bike makes less sense since you are are really booking. Does the pidgey chase after you or does it jump up right as you approach to peck you in the face and knock you off of your ten-speed?

They could've at least made it a hold item:

Repelling Whistle
Your following pokemon will blow this high-pitched whistle every 50 steps to drive off wild pokemon when you enter grass, water, or caves. It annoys your pokemon, too.

That would let you spend some happiness to save the time and trouble of random encounters and trendy body spray.

Re: WOAH... Easy on the wild Pidgey...

Max Repels, enough said

Actually, some time ago I did some quick math and found that Super Repel gets you the most bang for your buck. For instance, to get 1000 steps of protection, you'd need 10 regular, 5 super, or 4 max repels. The totals come to 3500 for the regular, 2800 for the max, and 2500 for the super. And considering that you can get supers a bit sooner....

Anyway, I haven't noticed the encounter rate being higher at all. I mean, I run/bike all the time and there's quite a few times I realize that I just made it through an entire route without seeing a single pokemon.
