Welcome to a brave new world, where technology has been rendered obsolete by the overuse of resources, and where humanity must fabricate resources of its own to survive.
The earth, shrunken and dried like a raisin in the sun, had become a vast and forbidding desert, when some foolish (and perhaps brilliant, for in such an environment, genius is one step away from madness) scientist unearthed a rare treasure. It was the ancient, lost art of magic, bound up in a rather dusty old tome.
There being nothing to lose, he attempted to draw a magic circle, and accidentally nicked his hand in the process, spilling some blood into the circle. A faint glow appeared.
Could it be?
Blood was the key to all things?
He drew the magic circle again with blood, and muttered the words.
Aperi quaeso oculos durus aquas. Det mihi quod postulo, lumen luminum omnium!
With this breakthrough, magicians from all around the world began to pop up. A few casualties here and there, when some kid nicked open his wrist and died because of an infection and some other complications, but that was fairly normal in this kind of situation.
Eventually, some nutjob decided to try human sacrifice. If blood was the key to all things, then if you had a lot of it, then how much more power could you attain?
Unsurprisingly, lots of it.
In order to create some semblance of world order, the rudimentary governments gathered together and decided to select a Magic Council, dubbed Paragon, to govern over the magicians of the world. They drew from a custom of old to determine merit -- the Olympic Games -- except that the events would be magic-centered competition, and absolutely no human sacrifice was allowed.
It is here in the arena that you find yourself, competing with your fellow magi, blood against blood, for these coveted positions on Paragon.
Little do you know that of the ones who have reached the semi-finals, these eleven, including yourself, have two that are unlike the others. They reek of human sacrifice, and have bolstered their abilities by draining dry the blood of others.
