Silvally & the Player Character

Did you use Type: Null/Silvally to assist in catching or defeating the Ultra Beast?

  • Yes I did! I would change Silvally's type accordingly, to give me an advantage.

  • I did not. I used other Pokemon instead.

  • I used both Silvally and other Pokemon to deal with the Ultra Beast.

  • I never did the Ultra Beast side quest in the first place.

Alola everyone! Since Silvally seems to be pretty popular right now in both the games (free Shiny Silvally event!) and the anime (featured heavily in the Aether Foundation arc with Gladion), I thought I would ask to see if you all have raised one in-game. Do you use one competitively? Do you like the line? How did you feel about receiving one from Gladion, as a Type: Null? How do you all feel about its recently announced Legendary Pokemon status? Any hopes for it in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon? And specifically, did you use it to catch/defeat the Ultra Beast in Sun & Moon?

I have evolved the Type: Null given in the game to complete the Alola Pokedex. I like the concept and the way it is obtained makes some sense, it wouldn't work plot-wise to get it before the main game is over or to get Gladion's one, that would be too bad to have him give it away after all he did for it and I'd rather not see him follow the same path as Lillie. What I'm most interested about is where the third Type: Null is and if we'll see anything about it in USUM, I sure hope so. I always considered it a Legendary Pokemon, it's available in a limited amount worldwide after all. I didn't use it to catch the Ultra Beasts because I only started trying to evolve it after catching them all, UB sidequest took priority over Pokedex completion.

Simply put, no. The reason: by the time I GOT Type: Null to evolve, I was pretty much done with every quest in Alola. Silvally was the last Mon I needed to complete the dex, which, by that point, I had long since completed the UB missions. So I never used Silvally (or even Null itself) against the UBs during those missions, as by the time I got Null to evolve, the last UB was stashed away in the PC. It actually worked for me better that way as I was then able to devote the attention need to evolving Null, since it requires friendship to evolve and has a base friendship of 0, so I knew I had some work ahead of me. So, no, I never used Null or Silvally against the UBs.

Even though it was designed for the UBs, it never occurred to me to try to get Silvally before capturing them. Getting Silvally battle-ready would have taken more time than just catching them with my current team, and with the goal of filling out the PokeDex, getting five UBs by just going up and catching them takes priority over getting one more entry through a tedious friendship evolution, much as I love its design.

I really like Silvally, I think Pokemon that have a very heavy relationship with the story are a good idea and make the Pokemon itself more memorable. His design is quite good, it looks like a fururist gryphon and the references to Arceus are a nice touch too.

I received Type Null after all the UBs, because I thought it was given to you in the story. I remember that after I heard that it was obtained in the Aether building I went there and I was angry because I thought Gladion was going to give me it at the lab (where it makes the most sense...), so I had to check a guide and then go back to the reserve floor.

I have not evolved it, as there are a lot of friendship evolutions in the Melemele and Akala dexes and that left me very tired.

Like most of the above, I completely forgot about Silvally until after I had all of the Ultra Beasts in my possession. It also didn't help much that I figured out pretty quickly that you can just chuck a beast ball at them from full HP and catch them (fun fact: all of the UBs except for Guzzlord have a catch rate of 255, so a Beast Ball is a guaranteed catch from full HP; even Guzzlord is a 10% chance to catch at full HP and no status).

I wanted to do that, on my second file. But I decided to hunt for a shiny Null first, to then go out and hunt the UBs with him.

...

I soft resetted for 5 months before getting the shiny Type Null, and my wants for a Fast Ball Kartana was too high to wait that long.
Anyway, his name is Type: Bronze and I love him very much. I ended up getting quite the taste for shiny Type: Null ('cause you know, I looked at his face for so gaddam long that I basically acquired Stockholm Syndrome), and am trying to use an Eviolite Type: Null on my fun teams, and I'm gonna be trying to make a VGC team with him, as I want to show him off absolutely everywhere.

He has all 7 ribbons that he is able to acquire on Sun and Moon, and if there are anymore ribbons that you can acquire on USM, you can be sure that he is gonna have them as well.

Also, Silvally? I want him as well, and would like to use him for his designed objective of killing UBs. Or at least weakening them to capture them. Or tanking hits, I dunno. Hopefully you get him during the story on USM.

As said above, catching the UBs didn't require much battling as you could just throw a Beast Ball at most of them at full hp ^^;

That said, I still wouldn't have used Silvally if it was needed. As also commented above, you simply get Type: Null too late in the game and training it for just that side quest is too much effort. And I also prefer using the team I've used throughout the main story for any postgame quests too.

Personally I think Silvally's great, I just love its concept. I have trained Shadow the Silvally to be a decent Pokemon to use competitively, and he's put in some decent legwork. I did use in in the UB sidequest, but not out of any "Made to fight them" obligation. I just used it because I'd gotten it by that point and was using it anyway.

Personally I don't like its new Legendary Pokemon status. I like the thing, but I don't feel like it deserves that status of "Legendary". I feel like that title should be reserved for Pokemon who are, you know, legendary, there are legends about them. Mewtwo kinda worked as a Legendary Pokemon because there was still a fair amount of mystery built up around it, but Silvally has literally no mysteries or legends so I just don't think it really deserves the title.

No, I just got it for Dex completion purposes.

To catch the UBs, I simply threw Beast Balls at them. Didn’t really do a whole lot of fighting.

But hey, it’s a nice thought. I might keep it in mind for the next time I do a story-oriented playthrough. (y)

I admit, I forgot Silvally after it evolved from Type: Null. I just did everything else using my normal team,

Wowzers. I had no idea so many people didn't really use it for the side quest. Still, it makes sense-like so many of you have pointed out, it does take some work to get to Silvally from Type: Null, as well as most Ultra Beasts being very easy to capture in Beast Balls (I remember Guzzlord taking some time).

I guess I'm just a sucker for story elements. :ROFLMAO:

On average, any Pokemon that is given to you / obtainable in the post-game (especially if any postgame arc is also completed) is just Pokedex filler.

He went into the box with the other Legendaries. Heck I didn't even evolve mine

It's a Legendary? Not in my eyes but whatever. I don't like this pokemon it's just a poor man's arceus and of course I didn't use it. I used Tapus to capture all the UBs (and my trusted premium Pokemon catcher, my lovely Absol).
I just evolved null and let it rot in the pc with all the other legendaries.
