Why are Dragonite and Tyranitar banned but Salamence and Garchomp are not? I was practicing for this in a local Pokémon League today and only the second (and last) person I battled noticed I had a Tyranitar and told me it was banned and I checked on the Global Link to see that this was true. I will probably use a Hippowdon instead now.

I'm a bit late here, but it was because they were banned from the 2008 Video Game Showdown. This tournament intentionally uses the same rules as that tournament.

The reason they were banned from 2008 Video Game Showdown was because they couldn't be obtained at Level 50 (and in DP there was no feature to scale down to Level 50 in local wireless battles). Tyranitar and Dragonite both evolve after Level 50, so you cannot get them at Level 50.

about time.
I remember the 2008 VGC tournament and thought they where going to use those rules if they did this.
I was right, apparently.
anyways, SINNOH CONFIRMED
