Slowpoke+Shellder=...

I love Slowpokes and Shellders.

Slowpoke + Shellder = Slowbro
Slowpoke w/King's Rock + Shellder = Slowking
Shellder+ Water Stone = Cloyster

I think they are so interesting. Plus look awesome. In the new game they should make a new evoluvtion of shellder. So you can have the Shellder on Slowbro's tail, and Slowkings's head with out it being attached to the Slowbro or Slowking.

I wonder at what point in the design process they decided to involve Shellder in the whole thing.

I think they saw the fact that Shellder was a shell and Slowbro had a shell on its tail and Slowpoke fished so they must have accidently stumbled on the story or had been planning it from the start.

Maybe they were trying to illustrate symbiosis in the Pokémon world.

I agree on the symbiosis point.

I personally wouldn't be surprised if both Shellder, and Slowpoke were created at about the same time, each with the other in mind.

It is possible that if one Pokémon is in close contact with another at the time its evolution, that it will undergo a sort of mutation/half-evolution, and the Shellder on a Slowbro is the most common and recorded case of this instance.
