Small Question About Trade Evolutions

I've looked everywhere for this answer, but nobody seems to have one for it: When you initiate a trade + item evolution (like trading Poliwhirl and a King's Rock), does the item dissapear when the Pokemon evolves - or does it evolve into its new form, retaining the hold item?

I'm not 100% positive, but I seem to remember the item dissapearing. That's why I spent ages at Bagons trying to steal dragon scales I think...

It goes bye-bye. That way you can't evolve two Pokemon with one item.
