So how do they determine gender in the Anime?

Male Pokemon have penises. Female Pokemon, by contrast, have vaginas.

@CommanderPigg: Remember that convo about bird biology? :p

A lot of Pokemon have characteristics related to their genderm kyu. For example, Trip's Snivy has a deeper voice than Ash's Snivy, kyu. Georgia's Pawniard had a soft voice and made feminine poses. And Stunfisk has a very female voice and body, kyu.

Other than ones with only one gender (like a Tauros or Miltank), how do they know?

Doubt anyone in the anime gives a rat's ass about what gender their Pokemon are. It's only when they're dealing with Attract that they become mildly interested in it.

Yes, I do indeed. One of the weirdest hours on the Anime forums I've experienced. ._.

And those characteristics are so stereotypical. I mean, how would you tell if Yanmega was a girl? It has a softer, more feminine voice than other yanmega? though, for the billionth time, I knew it was a girl all along

And for Arceus's sake, feminine poses dictate girlhood? Dawn's Piplup wore a stinkin Cheerleading outfit. And he was a he.

If they don't want to tell, than neither should we...

I guess.

sfw response: The pokedex probably has a gender feature.

nsfw: see Slippery Gypsy

That's in-world, though. Otherwise, yeah, they pretty much only tell the gender if they absolutely have to, like for Attract or actual romantic relations. The Purrloin ep seems to be a singular exception to this, but even for that, they had to say what the real gender was.

Pokedex,Attract or a pokemon loving another pokemon and not like the cat episode of best wishes

While some Pokémon have gender differences which actually goes somewhat noticed by creators(Haruka's Fushibigibana, anyone of Fukamaru line etc.); and some are only gender specific(Urara's Minomadam, Nozomi's Erlade etc.); they usually find out with if some Pokémon uses Attract on one of the cast's member's Pokémon or one of the cast's member's Pokémon is infatuated and that is the plot of that episode(be it either a filler or a release episode). Unless their gender plays a role with their characters, like Togekiss big sister status, Mimirol's crush on Pikachu, Emolga's vamp status, or Tsutarja's bitch with a heart of gold status. Because there is usually no other reason to tell their genders(though by that logic there is no reason to not tell their genders either, but hey, this is a cheap animé that only exists to promote games, keeping up with their genders would cause a lot of problems, since while they are just beasts, they do have intelligence).

In universe explanation is either Attract, a Pokémon crushing on other or probably Pokédex(ie. the trainers that don't appear in animé that do bother to check their genders to provide them more support, unlike our band of 10 year old children).

Man this post is needlessly long.
