Anything I should know about Vista? I didn't really WANT Vista, but apparently, you can't buy a laptop without it, so Vista it is.

Any advice, warnings, etc about Vista? It'd be nice if I could know what I was getting myself into. (It's 2 gigs, so it SHOULD run stuff decently.)

Well you can get laptops without vista still, you would have to get it custom built which would be much more expensive... (And theres allways Mac)

Anyways, prepare for a very short battery life. My suggestion would be to turn off the Aero graphics feature. This should help a little.

Other than that... Enjoy! Its quite nice once you get used to it.

I don't have much experience with Vista, but I know a whole lot has changed, prepare for a few new routines. My sister's new laptop went through the same deal, Vista and nothing else. She's been using it for about 2 months now and tells me she gets frustrated with its prompts from time to time.

Apparently, Vista is going to ask for a confirmation on almost every task when you begin using it in the first few weeks. After a while, those prompts appear a little less, but are annoying regardless. However, there a ton of fun little features in there that can make up for that [I can't say what, my sister has just told me she's been enjoying them] but all those little flashy add ons kinda hinders performance. Of course, my sister is running off the min spec of 1 gig of ram. You have 2 gigs so you should be fine running a few of your applications here and there.

I'd say enjoy it. Personally, I'm going to hold off on an upgrade [mainly because the computers I have that run Windows now can't meet Vista's min requirements] and I'm in a rather comfortable place with my Operating Systems. That, and I don't really care for Vista too much as there isn't anything in the upgrade that I already can't do or really need. I may end up never upgrading to Vista as it just takes up to much processing power when I really need that space free for other applications. I guess upgrading really depends on what you're planning on using the computer for. Moving aside from my mindless chatter, the bottom line of it is, I think you'll be fine.

I've heard everything from what Clair said to the exact opposite. I can't trust anything until I try it myself. X_x

As a person who uses Linux and is immersed in the pro-Linux/anti-Microsoft SlashDot groupthink, I happen to think that Vista isn't a bad operating system at all. There are a lot of usability and security enhancements that make Vista an improvement over XP:

- The Windows Desktop Manager finally brings desktop/UI rendering away from the CPU and shifts it to the GPU. A much more efficient use of resources.
- Vista finally makes people run as standard users instead of running as administrator all the time. This'll at least start to give application makers incentives into writing programs that don't require root access to run. (Why the fuck is your app writing to Program Files? Why the fuck do you need to write to the registry?)
- Users finally get their own general personal folder instead of being given a single folder awkwardly named "My Documents"
- The new Programs list in the Start Menu is far better designed than the old clunky Programs pop-up list.
- There's a search bar always available at your disposal when browsing files or programs. Very convenient.
- The new Windows Explorer directory breadcrumb navigation interface really makes browsing files easier.

A lot of these enhancements are already implemented in Linux and Mac OS X but still, I'm not seeing the comparisons people are establishing between Windows ME (arguably the worst Windows build ever) with Vista. I'm not finding myself rushing back to XP like some people have claimed to do.
