So is the HGSS advertising in the anime done at this point?

Aside from Movie 13 and some of Ash's Johto Pokemon possibly being used in the league, do you think the HGSS advertising in the anime is mostly over now? HGSS are about 5-6 months old in Japan now, and it seems like they're now concentrating on wrapping up DP. As for what they're done with:

- Kotone/Lyra got 5 episodes, but I doubt she'll appear again at this point

- Pokethlon got 1 rather (poorly received) episode about it

- Dawn got a Cyndaquil, much like May got Kanto starters

- Movie 13 is a mix of Johto and 5th gen advertising

But other than that they seem to be done. The new Team Rocket characters are likely to be ignored in the anime, (although it would be nice to see them), the Sinnoh/Johto Battle Frontier may not be featured due to the lack of time, and all the other HGSS characters don't really have much room to appear in DP now.

On top of that, it seems like Johto as a region won't be revisited in the anime, with Ash going straight from Sinnoh (back to Pallet), and then to the 5th gen region. What do you think?

There is the fact that Dawn will get a Togekiss, which is an evolution of a Generation II Pokemon. Hopefully more Frontier Brains will appear, and I wouldn't be surprised if the most common Pokemon during the Pokemon League and Grand Festival are from Generation II.

The anime is one big advertisement. And the thing you must realize with advertising and marketing, it doesn't stop till it becomes nonprofitable. You can say "it's already been about 5-6 months since HG/SS came out", and easily turn that around into "HG/SS have only been out for 5-6 months so far."

Fact is, the games are still selling. Not as much as when they first came out, but they continue to keep a steady pace. What helps that? Advertising of course! Thanks to the anime, new fans are being created every day. Those who haven't jumped on the HG/SS bandwagon yet still have ample opportunity to do so. If anything, it's Diamond/Pearl that are old and busted, while HG/SS is still the new-hotness. Platinium has cooled off considerably and Generation V is still baking in the oven (and won't be ready till June).

So, to answer your question, no, the marketing isn't done. It won't stop till the games are discountinued.

I honestly felt HG/SS advertisement to be pretty bad. I don't mind the advertising aspect, but NE Pichu was pretty much the worst marketing ever. Seriously. It would've been neat if we got some Johto characters who never appeared in the anime before, but instead we got two alright characters, a Cyndaquil which probably won't do much (but is better than May's Squirtle atleast), and some older Johto Pokemon making a few appearances. Kind of ho-hum.

Well both FR/LG and HGSS came out in the middle of current story arcs. The writers couldn't possibly advertise them fully when we were in both the middle of Hoenn and Sinnoh when those games came out.

They're not really new gens so the writers don't have to make a big deal out of them, but it is surprising how they did not rush Sinnoh at all and apparently had no desire to bring Ash back to the Johto region at all.

Even Kotone being gone in only 5 episodes feels jarring, (and Leaf not appearing), I always felt they should have stuck around as recurring rivals for said arcs.

Meh, Kotone will probably come back as a cameo (like May, Kris, Misty, etc).

I agree with Scott, why re-write and re-visit Kanto and Johto when ASh has already traveled there, got the badges and completed in the leagues? It would be rather boring.. And would set the anime far behind for the 5th generation..

The anime is a video game commercial. The advertising will go on until gen V.

I wonder if they could somehow incorporate Pokéwalkers into the anime somehow...

heh, the games promote it enough I'd think the anime would use it in every other sentance.

This is the logical answer and this is what will happen, but I'm just expecting Scott to turn this thread into a "the writers won't revisit Johto, because Johto was crap" argument in a few minutes...

To be fair, it's not like they'll visit Hoenn either when/if RSE remakes happen, which would be in about 2 years.

In a logical world, where we both live, you're right. In Scott world, no Johto revisiting has to have meaning... a meaning that mysteriously fits his opinions on the hell we call Johto.

We're pretty much confirmed to have Johto pokemon in the League and if there's a short arc afterwards, they should also be used there. Plus, in recent episodes, we see a lot of Johto pokemon, like DP148 or DP158 (there were several Johto starters knocked out)... so until gen V, there's gonna be Johto promotion.

I don't know why some fans are concerned with Buck debuting and Charon getting his closure, when there are far more Generation II characters who never appeared during the original saga. It also astounds me to see fans holding out hope for Giratina to appear outside Movie 11, and for Heatran to have more than one episode about it. Is that really important when you consider that Ho-Oh hasn't had a major appearance anywhere?

The DP series seems to put the Johto starters in a losing position a bit too often (it started with Quilava and Croconaw in DP29, and then it also happened twice with Kotone). Dawn's Cyndaquil needs to have an impressive performance in the Grand Festival (preferably outside a double battle), and more importantly, Ash's Johto starters deserve to have a lot going for them in the Sinnoh League.

Now that you think about it,HGSS remakes didnt get much advertizing in this show but than agin we still have time until new game comes out for getting little more out of it.

As its been pointed out there is 13th movie on its way including Johto pokemon,Dawn is getting Togekiss and there is posibillity of seeing Kotone again(though i wouldnt bet on it).

Speaking about revisitng Johto, theres most likely not much time for group to go there which is a shame really because we could maybe see some familiar past faces, gym leaders and older places through Ash went before.

Having mini arc with Frontier Brains is possible, but in that case it would have to be very short in order to have everything included.

Hopefully when next region appears on horizont we wont get another predictable scenario of getting another new girl starting contests all over again. In my opinion it would be much better bringing someone older(like Misty who is great character and trainer which adds difference),bringing something new on table. Not very likely but not impossible either,if writers decide to shake things up.

- Pokethlon got 1 rather (poorly received) episode about it

It was poorly received by fans on forums which represents minority of whole pokemon audience. We have no idea how it was received by target audience and kids in Japan.

That's the ONLY reason Scott made this thread

I don't know why some fans are concerned with Buck debuting and Charon getting his closure,

All the partners recieved eps, why leave Buck out? they're clearly trying to showcase all of them
I don't really care about Charon, but it is weird how he randomly disappeared rather than arrested like the others

when there are far more Generation II characters who never appeared during the original saga.

I'm sure people want to see these too, but it's unlikely to happen now... but we can never know - who would think Wallace will appear years later in DP?

It also astounds me to see fans holding out hope for Giratina to appear outside Movie 11,

Almost all gen 4 Poké get eps despite how some of them got movies already
If we assume Gallade will be in the GF with Zoey and that we'll see Burmy's forms and the blue Gastrodon sometime in the near future and maybe a proper introduction of Kricketot... (excluding Porygon-Z) the only Poké left to showcase in the DP episodes will be Manaphy, Giratina (proper introduction) and Arceus
So I actually want Giratina to appear and I don't see why it's so bad...

and for Heatran to have more than one episode about it.

I don't want Heatran to get another ep, but I don't really care what they'll do with it...

Is that really important when you consider that Ho-Oh hasn't had a major appearance anywhere?

I agree that they should've done something with Ho-Oh but I doubt we'll get anything this gen other than a very minor role in the next movie
Other than that the best we can hope for is that the Sinnoh League's torch will use Ho-Oh's fire like Johto did... it makes sense: Kanto and Hoenn used Moltres while Johto used Ho-Oh so Sinnoh might do the same

(it started with Quilava and Croconaw in DP29,

"Losing position"?! they won about 10 battles in a row including beating the stars of the show... yeah, they lost eventually but that was ONE lose after a LOT of wins in a row... that's great!

and then it also happened twice with Kotone).

It made sense for Ash and Dawn to be better than beginners...

Dawn's Cyndaquil needs to have an impressive performance in the Grand Festival (preferably outside a double battle),

I think Cynda already proved itself... anyway, the GF is double performance and double battles so don't expect to see this in the GF

and more importantly, Ash's Johto starters deserve to have a lot going for them in the Sinnoh League.

QFT
I agree and believe this will happen

Now, just to prove Scott wrong...
Let's see the second of the two upcoming hour specials:
- Bertha ep: a COTD with a Magby
- Togekiss ep: main character getting a Sinnoh evo of a Johto Poké

Actually, the whole DP series since its beginning (before we knew about HGSS) always focused mainly on gens 2/4 and it continues to this day and will continue until next gen begins

I also can't see what's wrong with the HGSS advertising in the anime... just because they didn't go to Johto dosn't mean anything... they did a lot:

- All the Sinnoh evolutions of Johto Pokémon were given to main characters/rivals and other than Togekiss were obtained in their first Johto form (remember we did get a Togepi ep anyway and Togetic got a cameo at least) of course I don't count Porygon-Z

- 5 eps arc with the heroine of HGSS

- Dawn got Cyndaquil

- Movie 12 had Spiky Eared Pichu and the Johto starters

- Movie 13 will have Entei, Suicune and Raikou (even if they're not "real") Celebi and possibly Ho-Oh and Lugia

- Johanna got Umbreon instead of Kangaskhan she had in the games

- The focus on gen 2 Poké got even stronger than it already was

- Ash will use his Johto team in the Sinnoh League

- Brock got the Pokégear

- We got a Pokéathlon ep

The upcoming movie and eps with Magby and Togekiss and the OP hint of Johto team in the League are more than enough to assume they'll continue the gen 2 focus until next gen start (which was obvious anyway...)

I don't know why I even bother with Scott...

I can't really think of anything to add to this which hasn't already been said, though to throw something out there that's kinda-sorta-relevent-ish;

I find it rather ironic that, while we've got the sudden influx of johto pokes in the show and episodes featuring a character from the games, poor ol' Wobbuffet has remained almost invisible throughout. Man, remember when he was more or less the Johto pokemon? So yeah, a Wobbuffet episode. We're several years (?!?!) overdue dudes!

I actually kind of wish the Pokelthon got more focus. Like, if we had time, a mini-arc would have been wonderful.

But yeah, I do wanna see Ash's Johto dudes do a bit more. Totodile and Cyndaquil evolving to the middle form would be neat, Donphan and Heracross need a victory, and Noctowl...well...needs help.

Is that really important when you consider that Ho-Oh hasn't had a major appearance anywhere?

Yes!

Heatran >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Ho-Oh.

No comparison.

You'd think they'll want to use the female Wobbuffet from the games some time... but we had it in games for 4 years (almost) and they didn't do it so I guess we better not expect it... too bad, that could make a funny ep and Wobbuffet will fall in love again after the last time with Kirlia...
I still hope Jessie will find a way to properly use Wobbuffet in a Contest and use it to win her last ribbon in a full episode about her Contest... but I guess this won't happen either
