So is there any real reason you can't change a Pokemon's name if you're not the OT?

Like... it'll still have the same ID and original trainer. Sometimes, I forget to name it before I trade it over, and then it's just like... ehh, it's just a little thing but it bugs me.

Well, just like the Name Rater says, you can't change a nickname given by another Trainer because the game is retaining whatever meaning the OT has to give that nickname to the Pokemon.

Actually, even if the OT and ID No. of the Pokemon matches what you have right now, odds are you still won't be able to change the nickname. There's another hidden set of numbers in the game that sorta acts like a 2nd ID No. and it can't be found in the game (but perhaps through hacking). The OT, ID No., and that other number must all match what you have now in order for you to be able to change a Pokemon's nickname even after a trade.

I can understand the reasoning if you trade between a lot of people... But I tend to trade between myself. If I mean to be the same person in Fire Red and Soul Silver, for instance, it gets a bit inconvenient ><

I find it pretty annoying as well. I wouldn't mind nearly as much if there were a way to give a nickname to a traded pokemon that doesn't have one, like all the event legendaries.
