...strike that. Reverse it.

Anyway, guys. Generation V is approaching quickly. This message is going out to all of you. Every single editor. Even if your grammar totally sucks. Even if you fail at link templates. We're gonna need you.

Rumor has it that 160 or more Pokémon are gonna be added this time around.

That is. A. Lot.

Isshu's not exactly tiny, either. Route 1's just the new beginning. Who knows if it'll go beyond 28 (making my move of Johto's routes justified, of course), considering we've had regions with up to 34 routes on their own before.

I've got a lot of template upgrades to finish over the next month. Routes are just part 1. Next is landmarks, then the wild Pokémon availability, Gym Leader and opponent Trainer templates, Pokémon learnlists, and so many more. If we get any new Pokémon this month pre-release, please please make them in your userspace. I will need opinions very quickly on a lot of my templates. Focus is right now on preparations. And when the game's street date gets broken (it likely will)... we will need that information as quickly as possible, so as to make all the pages.

I'm debating whether or not to lock the wiki down for the first week of BW's release... if you guys can show me the quality of our articles will not suffer when we get this influx of new Pokémon to put us over 600... I might not. It depends.

There is a ton for us to do. Let's get it done together.

I suppose this is as good a place as any to post this:

I've been working on a few refinements to our current Pokemon pages. This was to address two issues: a complaint that the Biology sections were too big and full of either empty spaces or crap; and my own belief that since we already include egg moves on the pages of fully evolved Pokemon, we should also include moves learnable by previous evolutions.

This is what I've come up with: My vision of the Biology and Moveset sections for two Pokemon (Raichu and Nidoqueen). I think Biology speaks for itself, but a few notes on Movesets, and the Past Evolutions table I've added: This is actually a re-use of the Level-up Moves table (since I'm not all that great at making tables) and so would ultimately need to be replaced with its own dedicated table. In the Raichu table, you'll notice some of the Pichu moves are marked with a dagger: these are event-only moves and the table's key would identify them as such.

If this looks overly complicated, fear not: I deliberately chose two Pokemon that have a lot of moves exclusive to prior evolutions (Raichu might just be the most compliacted example there is). Most Pokemon don't have anything like this number - Mightyena only has Crunch, for example, and I'd imagine there's a huge number of Pokemon that have none at all. To answer a concern that was raised last time I brought this up: the table could also contain links to prevo-exclusive moves from previous generations, just as the other tables do.

I know this is going to strike many as creating more work when we already have a lot on our plate, but I think that the dawn of a new generation is the ideal time to optimise our 'dex articles, since we'll be editing all of them anyway. I'd be happy to manage this aspect of the transition, assuming that people think this is worthwhile.

I like the ideas, Bikini Miltank. I've always wanted to see prevo-moves listed as well, although like you mentioned, most Pokémon only have one prevo move, so an entire table for it might be a little unnecessary. The idea of using mini-sprites to signify where the move comes from (in the example's case, Pichu or Pikachu) is perfect; we can use something like that to fit prevo moves into an existing template very easily (perhaps placing them into the Special Moves box, or using a small divider to place them into the level-up learnset, since it's technically moves learned through leveling-up).

Like you said, it's a big job to take on this close to Isshu's release, and I won't lie, I don't think we should jump right on it.
However, the release of Isshu gives us another opportunity, like you said; since in a few month's time, we're going to be building articles for another hundred or so Pokémon from the ground-up, if we have a style picked out beforehand for those, we won't ever need to change them if we just write them up with the new features in the first place. (we can come back to the older Pokémon later on, they won't need the new features nearly as much.)

On another subject, I'd like to echo TTE a bit and mention to everyone in the forums that we are on the lookout for more participation on more than just editing the 'pedia. Suggestions like Bikini Miltank's one there are a great example. So on the road leading up to Isshu, don't be hesitant to step up if you think you can be of assistance. (although preferably, something a bit more than "I think I can be of assistance, promotion please" would be nice. We're on the lookout for more than just a hand in the air.)

The biology section definitely needs something like that.

While I've been one of the "Why can't you just look at the pre-evo's pages?" people, I really like your design for that section, and now I think it's a great idea, especially for the stone-evolvers.

Could I get my userspace unlocked so I can try to help with this?

I say we should just lock the site come release day. In 2006 Serebii went down a few times IIRC and users can't even edit that site.

Ryuu, you've had your userspace back for a month. I didn't think you'd noticed :D

Huh... well, frankly after I mentally kicked myself for that incident, I sorta stopped caring about it. I never thought to check.

Okay, well I'll do my best to help. And Thanks Trom.

You mean the mainspace. TTE is saying that edits should be that the new pages should be made in the userspace.

I kind of meant both. We don't need server stress just so people can update their Black and White teams. At least place restrictions on it.

Bulbapedia is a COMMUNITY-driven encyclopedia. Not just ADMIN-driven. I say forget the lockdowns completely, thanks.

it is both for reducing server stress, and knowledgeable fans (ie: idiots) from making a ton of terrible edits that we have to revert/fix; and in a time where we want to get as much info down as much as possible, we dont want to take time to fix crap. do we like locking editors out? no, its a community driven site, but sometimes, it needs to be done.
now, there is a way around this in that we give some non-admins that are also knowledgeable editors the ability to edit during the locks, and come B&W, i think we will have to expand that special user list. we will need help.

I wonder how BP survived the release of DP... And dunno if page loads are any less expensive than database writes. Anyway, if there's going to be an expanded "trustworthy editor" group, then I think it's okay.

Plus the community wasn't as big for DP as it is now.

Also, when DP came out, everyone's concern was "Get up the most minimal information you can s fast as you can." Now it is "Get up absolutely all the info in a timely manner." To ensure that, we make the old concern not possible to happen. I'm not saying it's a ad or good thing, it just seems to be what is done.

Miltank man, I like your sense of style. I should've freaking thought to use the MSes in that template.

Heck, we could use it for the egg moves too. It'd be much better than the text list... because people could see from their boxes and party.

As for BP surviving the release of DP... there wasn't as much as there is there now. Over the past four years we've expanded so much.

I'm currently combing learnsets and listing every prevo-exclusive move there is. I'm over halfway through. Gen II had a lot of weird event-only moves courtesy of the NYC Pokemon Centre, it would seem. Splash on a Sunkern, anyone?

My plan is to make the tables on a series of pages in my userspace and then just drop them into the articles when they're ready. I may also put in the tables for earlier gens first, so I won't be ruining the main articles if it turns out I've made a mistake >.>

Regarding the oncoming Gen V storm as a whole... I was pondering this earlier, and perhaps it would be a good idea to assemble teams dedicated to different aspects of the transition? There are so many aspects to a new generation - new Pokemon, characters, movesets, sprites, trainer classes and so on - that it might be worth assigning different areas to different people. This is assuming we have enough people for this to work, of course.

Teams? Maybe. Doubtful we'd be able to do much. A day-long lockdown of the wiki so that we can get a list of things needing to be made for Gen V, update relevant templates, etc... might be a good plan, if everyone's okay with that.

Also, availability list update: [bp=User:TTEchidna/Catchable]HERE[/bp].

^Stole what I was about to suggest.
