in Gen I it was ok because there were only 5 and you could-with a bit of luck and perserverence-get through without Flash and i spose Fly as well, but now adays there are just so many that if you want to pass the game at least one Pokémon on your team has to have 2. That's half a moveset right there. Is anybody else as disgruntled as I am or are you perfectly gruntled with the number of HM's?

HM's are one of the only aspects of the game that require you to make sacrafices. Playing through the game would be kind of stupid without them.

Dude, they're not that bad.

(NOTE: This is the same guy who wanted to march into a showing of HP6 and... yeah, read that thread...)

Well, frankly, I agree, there are a lot, but that's the point. I'll always have to carry an HM slave or two with me if I expect to get anywhere. That makes it all the more challenging.

Mmmk....
a) In an ingame team Fly, Surf, and Waterfall are some of the most useful moves out there. 5/8
b) Rock Climb and Stregnth, eh... they're ok, I mean not exactly moves to use alot... 3/8
c) Rock Smash and Cut are good for when you don't have like uber strong Pokemon. 1/8
d) I never use Defog. 0/8

So all in all you can live with most of them.

frankly, I consider strength to be good. 80 base power, 100% accuracy. I've seen much worse.

It makes it more challenging. It'd be dull if they just made everything a stroll down the street. Besides, then Bidoof would be even more useless and annoying than it already is.

The only part that I actually wholeheartedly hate about HM's is that you can't delete them whenever you need a move really badly...

do you want to get stuck on the wrong side of a cave without a pokemon that can smash you out?

But HM's are reusable and I mean it saves me a trip to the move deleter. And I always have about 3 Escape Ropes on me.

yeah, but that's you. Most people aren't like that. And for some reason, they'll only have one pokemon that can learn a certain HM that you just deleted but now can't reteach cause that would be counter productive.

Well, if you put it that way there are two scenarios:

#1:

HM's are deletable. You delete an HM to make room for a better move, your happy! But then you encounter a Rock to Rock Smash, you don't have any escape items or Dig. You teach the Pokemon, Rock Smash again, leave then go to the Move Relearner and well relearn the move.

#2:

HM's not deletable. You try to learn a better move to no avail, you encounter a Rock, you use Rock Smash. You then want to learn the move, so you have to go to the Move Deleter, then go to the Move Relearner.

~~~~
All in all, its about the same, one just involves more travel.
But why does that mean that HMs shouldn't be deletable? Are the people who play pokemon really stupid enough where they need to be protected from doing something stupid? If that's the case, then we might as well prevent people from selling good items away, battling with too many pokemon weak to one attack, and from fighting trainers much stronger than them. It follows the same protectionist logic.
If the games could handle it, they could make HMs forgettable, unless in an area where you would have to use it or be stuck, where it'll say "this move can't be forgoten now" or something.
If pokemon can come back from releasing because of HMs, they can do this in later games.
I like the idea, but there are 8 now... ite annoying part is I can only have a team of 3 pokemon and 3 hm slaves... I like it better with 5. And defog is dumb. Id rather keep flash. I don't like my good pokemon to have hm's
I like to have all hm's on me because you never know wen a tree of a movable rock will be in your way, plus wen your in a battle in a foggy place its hard to hit your foe, only reason I carry defog... only if it was a holdable item instead, or you can have 6 move slots...
And I don't get why people say that changing the HMs would remove some of the strategy from pokemon. You still need a team of pokemon that can learn all of the HMs. That's one restriction that they would still place if the system was changed. And since Surf, Waterfall, and Strength have all been admitted to be good moves, the only strategy comes in picking for the other 5 HMs. It's not really that much strategy.
Though all of my complaints about HMs would go away if they made all of the HMs good moves and let me delete them at will.
Still no, holdable items, I don't wanna have to give my pokemon sertain moves, I wanna teach them what I want, or the best they learn on there own
Surf and Waterfall are on almost every OU and Uber water Poke now days so those aren't bad at all. The only HM I don't get is Defog..I only had to use it like twice in Platinum. But I now have HM slaves usually because when I first started out playing I'd put HM's on my best guys and later facepalm.
