So Nintendo just filed a patent for something. Maybe relevant?

The patent? A new DS game cartridge design.
http://www.siliconera.com/2010/03/05/nintendo-patent-application-hints-at-new-ds-cartridge-design/
The deal? It has DS teething, it seemingly fits in a lite, and its well...huge. No one knows its usage, if its for a new DS or what, but I'm betting its a new sort of Super DS cart thing, like for enhancing games or whatnot. Why am I making this thread? Why the hell am I making one which will likely bring up MANY arguments? Cause, if this thing is usable soon, and I can see it at E3, could the 5th gen be different from the 4th gen, not cause of looks, but because it would be in a cart such as these, boosting its graphical and technical powers, higher then DPtHGSS's?

Hm...

Looks fake to me,give a NON hand drawn black and white pic,and i might think its real

Microsoft filled a patent for 720,don't see an Xbox 720,now do we?

could be a super cartridge like you said, able to hold more data, thus making the game more money

Your frikin kidding me on the fake part right? I mean that's how most patents look, excluding some high quality ones. And they just registered a name, not a whole freaking diagram and the shape/size. Also that's a trademark, just to cover ground, not an actual patent which covers hardware or hardware ideas to be owned for a certain company. More then less a patent happens and less then more does a trademark happen.

Arent all patents black and white?
Anyways, it looks like a cross between a Action Replay and a real ds game. It might be like a super cart, which can hold more data or expansion chips. But i dont think it is a DS2 game, as the system shown and and the pin layout is for the DS.

EDIT: The GBA had a few rumble carts, tilt carts, and solar sensor carts, so it might be one of them.

There's no guarantee it'll be used either. While Nintendo have patented things that they have made, they have also patented things that never even went ahead in the end. The mobile phone gameboy comes to mind as a patent that went no where in the long run.=/

Mobile Phone Adapter that connected to the gbc to allow communication with phones in Japan comes straight to mind, and its kinda in the same area as your mentioned patent, so eh, it could come in a different form as the mobile adapter did. And yes all patents are in black and white, nothing else. Oh shit, just saw what you meant from 3 years ago. Okay yeah, get your point, never mind.

I haven't seen a patent yet,so i had no clue XD

got no idea what u r talking about dont talk at all misty

This is promising. I've mentioned in several debates about the size of DS carts that 16Gb carts were in production, and it's good to see necessary hardware changes are following suit.

I tried to not get my hopes up, but they're sky high now. Oh well...
Could this mean all 4/5 regions in one game?? Hm...
I hope this goes ahead.

It did intially strike me as looking like an ARDS, just not as wide.

I have to say that i kinda agree with the whole "super cartredge" idea.

However astetically (oh i know that's misspelled) it doesn't look right comming out of the back of the DS shown. It would have to be somewhat strong too, to survive being dropped. 'cause kids will drop their ds's as well as stuff them into their bags/rucksacks/ect without taking care or attention while doing it.

I JUST REMEMBERED WHAT THIS IS LIKE!

If it's made anything like that, it'll be quite sturdy. I dropped my GBC all the time with that game in and no damage was done... and I'm willing to bet hardware has improved since Gen I.

I doubt it's a rumble pack, because it looks like it'd break easily if it was. And it probably isn't a tilt sensor either, because Nintenfdo's already showed off games with tilt features that use the DSi camera instead, and it's far enough into the life of the DSi that exclusive games are more likely. So yeah, more memory is one of the only things that makes sense as far as what we've seen before - but it may be something completely new as well.

Also, what's with the bump and spur on the side?

Well, I doubt it's anything groundbreaking, or its feature would be listed in the patent to keep Sony and other future competitors out of the loop on it. I'm pretty sure it's just memory.

Did anyone else notice the odd, hook-like appendages on the left side of the cartridge? I can't help but wonder how those will function and why those are there.

You just made me facepalm. Nice.

Anyway, this certainly is interesting, though there isn't nothing right now connecting it to any game (be it, Pokémon or Mario or whatever), so I'm not going to jump to a conclusion and say "the new Pokémon games' coming out on it!"

Although I have to say, a larger cartridge could mean more space for data and such, which means if games were developed for that cartridge the graphics could be upped or the game world could be significantly larger- depending on the game, that could mean more playable levels, or in Pokémon's case, a much, much larger region.

I think I figured out what the bump and spur are for: they're a hook and button system (like the one some laptops use to stay closed). Since it doesn't look like it'll be able to "click" in like normal cards do because of the thick part, it looks like the hook can be retracted by pressing the button on the thick part of the card to insert it, then released to hold it in place (the larger pictures show clearly that they both retract in).

I'm not exactly sure where the hook would go in the card slot - I looked (and prodded around a little) in my DSi's slot, and there's a little piece of metal in the spot where the hook would go that might actually be able to recess into the system, but I can't tell.

In my experience, the camera isn't all that reliable for something like that, unless you have items that are laying around that are vastly different from their background. Also, my thoughts are that it's some sort of addition that helps with processing.

At first I was just sort of skimming through this general design, but something has caught my eye. In most the pictures you see two little nubs coming off of the cartridge, right? The topis a button, it triggers the one below it to pull back. It's a clip, so the thing doesn't pop out at the drop of a hat. If this was for a new system, the clip would be unnecessary. Why wouldn't you just build the game cartridges to the specifics of your own system? these are DS games. The little buttons prove it. It's so the push and pop system doesn't break when this thign goes in and out.

As to what it is. I dunno. I'm hopeful for a super cartridge, but it could always be some sort of tiny rumble pack (hopefully not, because that's a dumb idea).
