So...Spoink...

Leviticus 11:3 said:
Whatsoever parteth the hoof, and is clovenfooted, and cheweth the cud, among the beasts, that shall ye eat.
This requires both cloven hooves and chewing the cud. Pigs are out because:
though he divide the hoof, and be clovenfooted, yet he cheweth not the cud; he is unclean to you
Now Spoink, who neither chews the cud nor has cloven hooves, is even more of a violation.

Which means that no Pokemon are Kosher, because none of them chew cud.

So would that mean Jewish Pokemon trainers are basically screwed?

Only if they want to eat their pokemon. They may also have some difficulty if the pokemon die, as the carcasses are unclean to touch.

I thought that they couldn't even touch the animals (At least that's what I learned in freshman religion class...)

I could be mistaken. I haven't had any training in this sort of thing; I'm just going by the text I have on hand.
Leviticus 11:8 said:
Of their flesh shall ye not eat, and their carcase shall ye not touch; they are unclean to you.

Well, the aforementioned religion class was about the Old Testament. I don't know if that was just the Jews back then, or really conservative ones now, so I probably know as much as you do.

Under the Mosaic Law governing dead bodies, there were different degrees of uncleanness: Touching a dead beast made one unclean for only the day; touching a dead man resulted in uncleanness for a week. In the first instance a person was required only to wash his garments, or in case he ate an animal that had died of itself or had been torn by a wild beast, then he had to bathe in addition to washing his garments. (Leviticus 5:2; 11:8, 24, 27, 31, 39, 40; 17:15) Bodies of unclean animals would make items such as vessels, jar stands, ovens, garments, skins, and sackcloth unclean by contact (Le 11:32-35).

Anyone ever read the pokedey entry in ruby?

Ruby entry: "Spoink bounces around on its tail. The shock of its bouncing makes its heart pump. As a result, this Pokémon cannot afford to stop bouncing - if it stops, its heart will stop. "

This is cruel! I don't like Spoink but after I read this I feel so sorry for it.
