So, the Large Hadron Collider went off two days ago...

...and I'm still, disappointingly, alive.
Dagnabbit, I want my end of the world! We've been promised this since the beginning of civilization!

But in all seriousness, why the hell does the media feel the need to hinder scientific progress by playing on the public's fear and ignorance? The evidence points against any apocalyptic results, and yet the media just has to act like they're smarter than the scientists.

It's only one scientist anyway, and from what I've read, he's a massive attention whore.

December 21/ 2012. That's when the world will be sucked into a black hole. (I was watching a documentary, apprantly that's the date the Earth, the sun, and the centre of the Glalaxy which is supposed to have a black hole is aligned)

What we don't know scare us. What scares us makes the news. Good ratings.

In the event of the Earth being destroyed it will be the IEDAB's job to relay this information to people who need to know and provide advice on how to proceed.

I'm sorry, is this place run by aliens? I don't see who would get this relayed information with the earth destroyed and all.

The hype behind it destroying the world was kind-of stupid. It's not the first time that experiment has been done and it won't be the last time either. The reason why there was so much press is beyond me now, but I guess the reason is probably what Neku said.

You might want to double-check that.

I think I should bring this to attention so that everything is clear and everyone is on the same page. That site is completely misleading, nobody believe it! The suggestions that site gives you are potentially hazardous to your health, please be aware of this when you click!

Why do I keep reading this as Hardon (hard-on) Collider. That's just creepy.

Anyway my Physics teacher was saying that they just turned it on to test if it works. The actual experiment hasn't started yet, though it might have now. I'm just wondering how they'll know there is a black hole.

I'm guessing Rickrollin'?

And...craaaap, to say the least, I didn't know they freaking set that off already.

I'm all for scientific progress, but this always struck me as too nutty to do anything but waste money and apparently kill us all. Though if there was enough REAL chance, they would've been stopped, right? ...uh, right? I mean, it's not like if you have enough money to build this thing that you could have enough to keep anything under wraps. Plus, it's not like we've EVER been kept in the dark over anything, or ever done anything despite the certainty of danger, or had people die from a result of progress that ended up in a stalemate (a "Butter Battle Book" vibe- who'll push the button first, amirite?), or...

Oh, FGSFDS.

Someone find me some bible-thumpers that threw hissy-fits over this ("ONLY GOD CAN DESTROY HUMANITY!"). I don't know if any did, but these people amaze me for what they balk at anyway. I'll be all for them setting this thing off again as many times as they'd effing please if I can see some bible-thumpers pissing themselves over it. I can't help but be "well crap, death is better than seeing these people spawning- we'd be doomed anyway with them in the gene pool".

To be completely honest, I always forget about it even existing. But, it's the Large-mother-Hadron-fucking-Collider, and it got set off, and I can't get myself to just have an 'oh yeah, that thing' comment when it's about the LmHfC. But I still love seeing bible-thumpin' hissy fits. I'll look that up.

We don't want them to know.....

But yeah, 2012 is just like y2K and 6/6/06.....We'll still be alive.

Even if a black hole did occur I doubt it would be big enough to destroy humanity. ;-)

If the LHC accidentally created a black hole, it's extremely unlikely that it'd be any more powerful than being able absorb itself and then die.

I'm a Christian, I believe God is the only being that can destroy humanity (which I also believe He won't, He promised that after the flood), therefore the only part of this experiment I cared about was its cost.
