As we all know, Gary technically "left the show," at the end of Johto. He got one special afterward and appeared during AG's finale to hype up his return for DP. When DP first started people thought Gary was going to be making a huge return to the series and....it only resulted in him appearing for 3 measly episodes out of a 191 episode arc.

He last appeared in the Galactic finale and...has pretty much faded away into oblivion since with no indication if he'll ever appear again. Why do you think the writers don't keep him around as a recurring character as a researcher? It almost seems as if Gary's character is "cursed" to only appear a handful of times or not at all in each generation.

I'm pretty sure that his appearance in AG was just to motivate Ash to go to Sinnoh. I also don't think that there were a lot of people who thought that Gary was going to make a huge return to the series after that appearance. Aside from you, I haven't really heard of anyone having a huge expectation for Gary's return like that. Considering that he couldn't be Ash's rival and at most, he would be involved in researching the legendary Pokemon of Sinnoh, I really wasn't expecting him to appear that often or to have a significant role in the series. He wasn't in any of the promotional images or posters for the DP series if I recall correctly, so that was a pretty big indication that he wouldn't have a huge role from the start.

To be far, they weren't that interested in talking about older characters for a good portion of BW, so it isn't surprising that there isn't any indication that he'll appear again. I think saying that his character is cursed to appear only a handful of times or not at all in each generation is a bit dramatic. He wasn't never that important after he stopped being a trainer, so it makes sense that he wouldn't appear that often, or at least more sense than when he barely appeared as Ash's rival.

Anyway, I think that he stayed in Sinnoh to do more research on the legendary Pokemon. After seeing the lake guardians and possibly hearing about the gang's encounter with Diagla and Palkia, he might have wanted to do more research on the ancient stories behind them to learn more about them.

Obvious. He faded in oblivion, never to be seen again, until the writers need him...maybe never. :p

But I guess he gone ahead and went back to Kanto to study Sinnoh legends more.

He took over as Cyrus. ;D
Nah, idk, Pokemon is never good with keeping up their characters from the past.

The creative staff gave this reply: "Eh, who cares?"

You should know how they are by now, Gly. They only remember & use older characters when it suits them.

I don't think we'll ever know. Its virtually impossible to predict why the writers do or don't do certain things. IMO, Gary is awesome so I dunno whats the deal. They need Prof. Oak around more too!
