So what is going on with Ash's team this generation?

Note: This is not a "next capture" thread, that's what the other thread is for.

Anyway the writers are having Ash capture tons and tons of Pokemon this gen, and he now has two grass and water types on his team. It seems like Ash might get a secondary, "grass/fire/water" type this gen to back up his starters, which leads me to believe he's capturing another fire type.

But why are the writers doing this? Why are they suddenly filling up his team with tons and tons of Pokemon? This hasn't happened since Kanto and we all know what happened there?

While I think we can safely assume Ash will only use Unova Pokemon in the league now, are the writers building up his team for a victory?

Man, it's really hard to see the bigger picture here, mostly because there's soooooo much room for things to happen. I don't think it'll be exactly like Kanto, since the writing has improved for the most part and they're very good at planning things now, and he has control over his Pokemon so another "Charizard" situation won't happen.

It's gonna be an interesting couple of years, that's for sure. There's just a lot of ways this can go.

well, a lot of people have described Best Wishes as Kanto done right. Not only that, but Black/White actually introduced more Pokemon than the first games did, so I say it's understandable if Satoshi gets a lot of Pokemon from the region. As it stands right now, I find it to be a friggin' miracle that Satoshi is actually rotating out his team for once, which has never happened in the series before (usually, he'd just send someone to the reserves and let them rot until league time). Besides, if he's getting all the starters again, it'll be nice to saturate them out a bit with a roster of more unpredictable Pokemon (unlike what became of his Jouto team). With any luck, he may even get those last few types we have yet to seen him catch (he already got a Dark-type Zuruggu, and he might be getting a Rock-type Dangoro in the next couple of weeks).

I dunno.

Maybe they're addressing that "Ash doesn't catch a lot of Pokemon anymore" complaint that some fans of the old series had.

Since when did the writers care about whiny fans on a message board?

What it most likely means is more evolutions and only Unova Pokemon in the league. This also means the battles aren't stale near the end like in Hoenn. Don't get me wrong, I loved those league battles but it would have been nice if it wasn't the exact same 6 Pokemon in every battle.

I agree with Yamato-san in that I think it is understandable that Satoshi is capturing more Pokémon due to the huge amount of them in this generation.

However, I still don't really like it personally as I feel that it divides screentime up even more and might lead to less focus that I feel that some members deserve. There's a finite amount of episodes for Best Wishes, and dividing it up by a higher amount of Pokémon concerns me a bit.

As I recall, they got a lot of complaints that Ash was winning all the time so they... erm... yeah. :V

Seeing this capture hit me like a ton of bricks. How is it every episode I think nothing's gonna happen, something cool not only happens, but the cast even catch stuff?!

Well even if Ash doesn't do very well at battling this arc, at least he'll have a vast army of powerful creatures he can beacon to seek his revenge on the masses.

And isn't this the first time in ages that Ash actually caught an evolved Pokemon? I think since... Johto with that Beedrill he ended up giving to Casey?

I dunno. But I think we can pretty much agree that reserves are most likely not an option this generation. While I like that he's catching more, I'm annoyed that there really isn't any change in his core team. No one has evolved yet or shown drastic improvement. So many Pokemon this early may also mean that some are not going to get the best development.

He is a Pokémon trainer. Trainers are supposed to capture lots of Pokémon. I don't see any problem with this.

Considering he hasn't caught a lot of Pokemon since Kanto, its quite a change.

He only caught 2 Pokemon in Orange, 6 in Johto, 5 in Hoenn, and 6 in Sinnoh.

well....if Satoshi is keeping to catch pokemon and not gonna use the others in league we'll need Platinum Battle Frontier or something 'cuz I can't wait another region league to see some older pokemon in action

Most likely because we won't see any of his old pokemon at all in BW. In this way Ash will have an entire set of extra pokemon he can call upon in the Unova League when he needs to switch his roster around.

I think the writers might be building up his team for a victory this time. He can constantly switch his team around during the League. Makes him unpredictable. This way none of his opponents sould be able to figure out his strategy.

My theory:

BW saga will be a shorter saga and because of that, writers thought there is no enough time to focus on every pokemon on the cast. Thus:

* They give screentime and focus to most sellable/popular pokemon. Rest of them are overshadowed by them...

* A "faster paced" storyline.

* No "secondary arc" for main heroine. (Thus no Touko)

* More interesting/different pokemon (with less focus and screentime) to Satoshi. (To compensate lack of "heroine arc" and character development for pokemon.)

I agree with this as well. Giving Ash pokémon is the best way to showcase them.

I also agree with this. I've given up on expecting personality from Pikachu, but the others... right now, it feels like most members of Ash's team are underused and underdevelopped. because of the sheer number of them. Half of them feel like empty shells at the moment and adding more and more members to the roster isn't helping their case at all.

But, almost to add injure to injury, they're not going somewhere different with the pokémon. A grass type? A water type? What's next? A Kuitaran for Satoshi to complete the redundant set? Like... we could see Ash get pokémon of types he doesn't already have, so we could see a more variety of attacks and fighting styles, but no...

So, while I'm not surprised they're going that route, the results are less than exciting.

BW still has to last for about 4 years (or whenever the next gen will debut which probably might be 4 years). Sure Ash and co.'s journey throughout Unova might not last that long and we might get a filler arc but the whole series: BW (which would either include all of Unova or Unova + filler arc), should last about 4 years.

It's like the whole Hoenn/BF/AG. AG consists of both Hoenn and BF arcs the same way BW should consist of Unova and filler arc (or maybe all of Unova if the series slows down a bit).

But anyway, I'm definitely thinking that Ash catching all these pokemon is so that he can use them for the league. I mean with TR dumping their entire team at the Rocket Base, us not seeing an older pokemon in sight, etc. It seems that the league will also follow suit and just focus on the Unova pokemon. But in order to reduce the redundancy that Hoenn had with Ash using the same pokemon, Ash is catching more pokemon in order to have more variety. Which is understandable. So yeah, this collection of pokemon is probably for league purposes.

Wait why does a season half to last 4 years.I am sorry however that is way to long the first season was only 1 year long as was the orange island saga dp is the only 4 year long saga.I hope that black and white is only a year 2 years at the most.Four years is WAY TOO LONG!

Not really. First and Second Generations (without remakes) were last for 3 years, Third and Fourth Generations (with remakes) were last 4 years. RSE remakes are (still) not confirmed and there is rumors about lack of "third version" for Fifth Generation. Also, BW saga is relatively "faster paced" than all previous sagas. (except Kanto)
