I recently went from an episode when May was in the Hoenn and Kanto festival to an episode where Dawn was in her the sinnoh festival.
So why did May and her rivals never had to get get dressed up for the Kanto and Hoenn. Then all of a sudden Dawn had to in the sinnoh grand festival?

if it helps I haven't played any of the games

In the games, the Contests added the dress-up and Pokeball seals to the DP Contests.

In the old R/S contests, those features weren't around yet.

Cause Nintendo loves to play dress-up and wants every1 to dress the ugliest way possible :D

it may hurt, but true story

I also allways thought this was a bit strange, Thanks for clearing that up Alphaphlare and Gliscor'd.

I don't see how its strange. If you guys played the R/S games and did a Contest, you know the characters didn't get dressed up. In the DP games they do.

Besides, the whole dress-up thing was handled poorly anyway. Dawn wore the same pink dress in every contest till the GF, so it got old fast.

Ruby Sapphire and Emerald are the only Pokemon games I couldn't bring myself to finnish I was just sick of seeing water werever I went, so that is probably why i never new about it.

Didn't the anime explain that dressing for contest was a tradition in Sinnoh?

Yes, in the first DP contest too. They also explained the Pokeball seals in that episode.

I don't know how people could have forgotten this.

Because Super Contest are different from regular ones. You use ball capsules and you see more power based performances. I mean I friggin' loved Skitty's Juggling, what a cute talent. The small things are always the best. But, Super Contest are more about sparkles, showing off, dressing up, and standing out. Clothes make you stand out.

I don't feel the outfits were used to their full potential.

As said, Dawn wore the same exact pink dress for 11 contests till the GF. Zoey just wore masculine outfits and whatever Kenny wore was just dull.

It got pretty tacky after awhile. I much prefer to see coordinators battle in their normal clothes.
