Soft Reseting Question

I searched the forum and found the thread about soft reseting for shinies. I browsed the thread and didn't find anything pertaining to my question. I asked my question in the thread and it was ignored, so I'm making another thread. I'll delete after my question is answered.

I'm attempting to soft reset for a shiny charmander. After searching around I'm fairly certain that the picture showing what pokemon is in the ball when you choose one WON'T be shiny. What I want to know is if I choose to name the pokemon, will the sprite next to the name be shiny, or do I have to wait until I can open up the menu and get a summary of the pokemon?

tl;dr when is the earliest possible point in which I can check if it is shiny, and if not, SR.

I am sorry, I am the person who created the thread and If I didnt answer the question, here it is: When you go into a battle with a pokemon, you can then check if the pokemon is shiny. If you want to check a little earlier, then look at the stats, and look at the upper right corner of the screen to check for shiny stars. If this is gold or silver or crystal, that is what you should be doing. But, if this is diamond or ruby, you battle a first pokemon to find out. Once again sorry for not answering

Well, what if it is leafgreen? Will there still be a stars in the top right? Or should I go into the battle with gary?
