These are from my social problems textbook.

Each day in America:
1 mother dies in childbirth
4 children are killed by abuse or neglect
5 children or teens commit suicide
8 children or teens are killed by firearms
76 babies die before their first birthdays
182 children are arrested for violent crimes
366 children are arrested for drug abuse
390 babies are born to mothers who received late or no prenatal care
860 babies are born at low birth weight
1,186 babies are born to teen mothers
1,707 babies are born without health insurance
1,887 public school students are corporally punished
2,171 babies are born into poverty
2,341 babies are born to mothers who are not high school graduates
2,455 children are confirmed as abused or neglected
2,539 high school students drop out
3,742 babies are born to unmarried mothers
4,440 children are arrested
17,072 public school students are suspended

Countries in which homosexual acts are subject to the death penalty:
Afghanistan, Iran, Mauritania, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, United Arab Emirates, Yemen

Sources: "Jail, Death Sentences in Africa" (2001) and Mackay (2001)

Considering that you can be suspended for some inane stuff, this one isn't all that shocking. I was suspended back in middle school because I didn't run laps in P.E.

17,072 public school students are suspended

Suspended why? Bullying other students? Caught with a weapon? Caught under the influence of alcohol or drugs? Some other reason objectionable to society?

This is why quoting numbers without context is suspect.

For a country of 300 million people, that aint bad.

All of that stuff is 1/10th the amount I would've guessed.

I have to agree with Mozz. Though we could easily knock several of those number down quite a bit. Instead of falling to our knees and crying "life sucks" people should be thinking of ways to fix it.

Of course the homosexuality punished by death thing is a little out of our hands.

Intresting statistics, but, America isn't even trying to stop them. We could just ignore it, but than what if you were part of those statistics? All these babies born to parents who can't handle them are do to people not practicing abstinence like they should. If everyone waited til they were married, most of those statisitics would be gone.

The public school student suspension rate would be zilch if everyone homeschooled.

Babies born at a low birth weight, ok, so? They can easily bounce back from that in today's world.

So, most of those problems you mentioned are just due to parents not doing their jobs.

Homeschooling doesn't work for everyone. Or, in fact, many people at all.
Most parents are not qualified to properly instruct their kids. Not to mention many have to work full-time to support their kids.

Wow. You just don't understand human nature at all. There are two overriding human desires: eat and fuck.

That's one failure of the conservative mind. "Anyone can do what I can do."

Homeschooling can work for almost everyone. We went centuries with it actually. Also, ever hear of Home School Cirriculums? They have them so advanced that parents hardly have to do anything at all. Even idiots can do it.

Ah, if you can't practice abstience, than shut up about the birth problems, and have the kid. When you eat too much carbs, you get fat, when you have sex, you get kids. And if you don't want the kid, give it up for adoption to parents who cannot have children of their own. And the conservative mind has no flaws, lol. Its the liberal mind whose flaws can fill an encyclopedia.

And look at all the amazing scientific develops made at that time.

Actually, we DIDN'T go centuries with it. We went centuries with boys being taught the trades of their fathers, and girls being taught how to be good wives. And, that "centuries" we went without mass schooling were the centuries commonly called the "DARK AGES" and the pre-Greek times (and might have had it before then).

There's nothing wrong with homeschooling, it's just not for everybody.

I know a few homeschoolers. They seem pretty content. I had to go to 12 years of school, before college. I can say that I would have been curious to see what homeschooling was like. Because, my grades were merely average and the homeschoolers I know, they were probably smarter than the teachers. I think its more one on one attention at home and thus you don't have 20+ other kids slowing you down. I know my classmates sure slowed me down a lot.

I'm a fan of homeschooling. But like the public education system isn't for everyone, neither is homeschooling. The key is having options. Some kids thrive in the system we have now, and that's great. But I think we need to have more flexibility for those who don't. Play to strengths and help with weaknesses as opposed to shoving a kid who's bad at math in all the stupid classes even if they're good with other subjects, leaving them unmotivated in every single class.
