Okay, so I have a couple of slightly specific questions I'd like to pitch at you guys.

  • Would it be plausible for a Meowth (or other generally city-dwelling Pokémon) to board a ship for any reason?
  • Do you think Pokémon that had been traded to another Trainer purely so it could evolve and then traded back would be resentful, or emotionally affected in any other way?
  • Pokémon are clearly like normal animals in some ways, with intelligence, emotions, different personalities, etc.; how would this potentially affect a beginning Trainer?
  • What about the bond that eventually forms (or doesn't)?
  • Say that a starting Trainer isn't *really* interested in Pokémon, but is participating out of a mix of curiosity and frustration -- how might this affect both parties involved as a functioning, cohesing unit?

I appreciate your being patient with me. Thanks for your time. :)

Strange but I'll give my best answers.

-If Meowth is like any other animal, it doesn't know what a ship is and can wander onto it if it has the means. If it's chasing a Rattata or something and someone leaves a ship ramp unattended, it could get on.
- It would only not be resentful if the Pokemon was actually aware that the trade was necessary for evolution. And in such a situation where it is traded right back I doubt that it would have any resent. Resent would probably build if you traded it and never came back for it.
-A lot of Pro animal trainers in real life would swear that they can tell each and every emotion from the animals they work with even to the point of knowing the personalities and behaviors of animals they don't even own (See: Cesar Millan). So I can only assume that any new trainer will have to work long and hard to learn that much about their Pokemon. A new trainer might be confused or frustrated by some behaviors until, after time, it learns to accept them.
-If a trainer does go through efforts to learn about and spend time with their Pokemon (like in real-life), the formed bond will be strong.
- I can only guess that a trainer that is disinterested in their Pokemon will have that same attitude reflected back. Their Pokemon may be disobedient or uninterested in actually doing anything to support their owner who doesn't really care about them.

Thank you, Betterboulder. :)

- That's what I thought, too. Just wanted to confirm that it made sense.
- Yeah. But what if the Trainer didn't tell the Pokemon that they were only being traded temporarily. I can imagine the Pokemon freaking out - "Wait... why am I with a different trainer? What's going on with my body?!" - and then being rather pissed to find out that that scare was unnecessary. But you're right about that, strong resentment wouldn't build unless they were abandoned or something.
- That's what I thought. Using what you've said, the situation I have planned will be an interesting one...
- Both of those last two points make sense. I'll be making use of those. :)

Thanks!

That's kinda how May was when she started, but she grew to like Pokemon. Something similar might happen with others like her.
